Question About Roaming Profiles
by Guest James B- 3 replies

Hi, I’m about to upgrade from SBS 2000 to SBS 2003. Several of my users play “musical desks” based on scheduling and workload so I’d like to convert them from 'local' to 'roaming' profiles. Will their cached Outlook data (\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\outlook.ost) be in the data/files included in their profile folder on the server? I ask because some of them have rather large ‘.ost’ files and I would like to avoid copying it back and forth with each login/logoff. Thanks, James

SBS NTBackup Config
by Guest Kevin- 3 replies
I have a SBS 2003 sp2 with a single scsi tape drive. I am running NTBackup for nightly backups. It appears that the amount of data I am backingup has grown to a point that the nightly backup will not fit on one tape. Instead of NTbackup asking for another tape the backup fails. Is there a way to configure NTBackup to ask for another tape instead of failing?

GPO Issue
by Guest FallenNCantGetUp- 0 replies

Okay, I've configured a client image, and have everything running great. There are some fairly tight security restrictions, so a lot of services are disabled etc... I join the system to the domain, and it grabs the GPO settings and everything is fine. I use RIPREP to create an image, and then RIS that image onto a system. The new system can not get GPO settings. I get Events 1058 and 1030 when it tries to process the GPO files. Also, I noticed that in order to rejoin the domain, I have to use the NETBT name, and can not use the FQDN. If I try, I get a network path not found. I'm sure these two items are related. How can RIS break this? WIN…

Our server is a W2K3 Enterprise server with Exchange Server 2003 Enterprise. I use Windows Backup to backup our exchange server every night. (I also backup to tape. I use Windows backup to disc as a safety net.) I would like to keep the latest three backups in case I get a bad backup. Is there a utility available that would allow we to do that automatically? Thanks for your help.

Printing Question

I have something happening with my print server. I have noticed lately that the print jobs in the que say "Deleting - Printed" The jobs go to the printer but I have to manually go and delete all the .SPL files from old print jobs to make this go away otherwise the print que gets out of hand. How can I make it so the que gets cleared out automatically? As far as I know it used to clear out automatically. Thanks in advance.

Files and Folders Missing Security Access Denied
by Guest Stever- 1 reply

Windows server 2003 SP2 I moved a bunch of folders from one location on a drive to another location on the same drive. After the move I discovered that there are random files and folders that I can't access in any way. When i attempt to access them even as Administrator I receive Access Denied. When I right click on them I noticed that the security tab doesn't have anything in it. I tried to use CACLS.EXE to add the permissions back but I it can't since nothing has rights to the files and folders. Any suggestions? Thanks Steve

Audit event issue
by Guest FallenNCantGetUp- 1 reply
Okay, I've got a network running 4 domain controllers on server 2003. Everything is 2003 or XP on the network. Account Logon/Logoff - Success/Fail is configured on a GPO and applied to all workstations. The auditing works, kinda. Two of my domain controllers successfully track Security Events when a user logs on through one of the workstations. Specifically, I'm testing for 'failed' log on events. The other two domain controllers, don't record the events? They are tracking several security events, just not my failed logon? All DCs have the same GPO policy applied, and so far as I can tell aren't having issues applying security settings? I'm …

Hi, I am looking for a utility that could track the historical development of my harddisk. I know "Treesize"... that's basically a nice tool, but lacks a historical database. "DiskScout" is pretty nice... but I wonder if there is anything else that I could evaluate ? thx

Server 2003 Licensing Modes & QuickBooks
by Guest Ed B- 5 replies

I just installed & setup a new pc with Server 2003 to be used only as a file & application server in a workgroup setting. There are only 10 pcs in the network/office. I chose the per device/user licensing mode. The company has QuickBooks Enterprise Edition licensed for 10 users. If I installed QuickBooks with the QB database on the 2003 server, would there be any problem with the workstations (all running XP Pro or XP Home) accessing the database on the server? The reason why I ask this is that the Server 2003 Licensing (CAL Terminal Servers) confuses me. I do not think that using QuickBooks on the Server 2003 qualifies as a Terminal Service &…

Outlook clients offline after applying SP2 on a windows 2003 Serve
by Guest NoyPi_Yongski- 0 replies

Hi all, Anyone can explain what the server firewall per port feature included in SP2 does for the 2K3 server? We recently updated to Windows 2003 server SP2 from SP1 on an Exchange server (version 2K3 Sp2) that also serves as sceondary DC/DNS. After that some Outlook clients, were not able to connect to Exchange and goes offline. It was resolved by going to security setings of the Outlook clients and selecting NTLM password authentication from the default setting of Kerberos/NTLM authentication. I suspect it was something to do with the firewall per port included in SP2. Funny thing is, I know I checked that the server is not running Windows F…

Access Denied Error
by Guest Teke640- 1 reply

Converted our files system to server 2003 from Netware 6.5 this weekend. We did a backup and restore procedure using BackupExec (Back up netware, restored to Server 2003). We adjusted rights the rights to reflect group memberships in AD and drive mappings are done via logon script. Some, not all users, are receiving Access Denied errors when accessing folders on the mapped drives. Group Membership is correct, the share permissions are correct and the file permissions are correct. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Tweaking system guide

Of everything you can do to optimize Windows XP, one of the simplest is just to use it. As you launch and exploit applications, Windows observes your behavior and updates a dynamic file called Layout.ini. After every three days, when it senses that the computer is idle, it rearranges the locations of programs on the system hard drive to optimize their launch and execution. http://windows-xp-tricks.blogspot.com/

Local\Domain login problem
by Guest Barkingdog- 3 replies

Setting: client: Windows XP, Sp2. IE7 Browser-based used with app that supports "Single Sign On" (SSO) SSO works well for all users in Domain Group except for one (say Bob). When Bob accesses the app via browser it asks him to type his Windows credentials. He does this and he is in. If Bob logs in to another computer and starts the same app he is NOT asked to log in (so SSO is working there.). I noted on Bob's computer (where he has trouble) that the username in the login box appears as <local machine name>.<FQDN domain name>\bob. Any ideas on this one much appreciated. TIA, Barkingdog

Disk performance monitoring
by Guest TPGBrennan- 2 replies

The description of the Physical disk\current disk queue length perfmon counter indicates it should be no more than 1.5 to 2 times the number of spindles that make up the disk. Quite the argument has broken out among my co-workers, two SAn vendors, and myself over how to interpret this. does this mean that if we have 48 spindles in a disk group this counter can be as high as 98 without indicating a problem?
