by Guest Jason Talbot- 7 replies

I have a Server 2003 AD Domain Controller with SP2 that I can't backup the system state on. This server runs Microsoft Windows SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (WMSDE) which is part of the install for WSUS. My main backup software is BackupExec 10d and everytime I try to select the system state for backup it hangs. I then tried to use NTBackup and this also fails with the following error report: Backup Status Operation: Backup Active backup destination: File Media name: "Backup.bkf created 22/08/2007 at 09:41" Volume shadow copy creation: Attempt 1. Timeout before function completed Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:0xffffffff. …

Hi, my network map is below. PROBLEM: I want people to connect the SQL server through the our new metro/fiber line. At the moment they connect the SQL server over slow DSL line. I've enabled NAT on WEB machine. Port mapping works successfully. However people cannot connect the SQL server through fiber line. Instead, they connect over DSL line. From the WEB machine, I can telnet SQL on default port 1433. Below is the command line: C:\> TELNET 192.168.35.210 1433 NAT Properties for public interface of WEB Service: TCP Incoming port: 1433 Private Address: 192.168.35.210 Outgoing port: 1433 I've tested it at http://wh…

Shared file in use/Read Only access question ...
by Guest E-Double- 7 replies
When one person is in, say, a Word or Excel document that is in a departmental folder that is shared by say 12-20 people in the department, and another user tries to open the doc that is already in use, the second user will receive the standard 'File in use, read only copy will only be available' (or something to that effect). Is there some way for Windows Server 2003 (or Active Directory?) to either notify the second user or for that second user to find out who the first user is who has the file open and exclusive write rights to that file? The problem is, for example with up to 20 peeps in a department the second user has to call up or check with up to …

Boot.ini problems
by Guest tracert- 7 replies

I have a SBS 2003 R2 server that I can't boot without a boot floppy. Here's what happened - I have a software mirror using SATA hard drives. Drive 0 failed so I created a boot floppy while I waited for the replacement drive to arrive. I got the replacement drive and mirrored the system backup and set the boot.ini to look at drive 0. Something to note here Drive0 had a Dell Utility partion on it which wasn't mirrored to Drive1 so it was lost. I'm not sure if this is part of my issue and I haven't been able to find an answer on Dell's website. Below is the boot.ini that I'm using on the floppy (that works). This is also the SAME config I've saved …

Hello, I'm using Schtasks to create a scheduled task on a remote server using the SYSTEM account to run it. After I create the scheduled task, remote into the server, I try and run it and it comes back with status of "Could not start". When I view the log, it says "The system cannot find the file specified.". The really frustrating problem is I can open the scheduled task, copy the path and paste it into the run command and it will launch my executable. So the path IS correct! If I delete the task and create it manually, browsing to the same executable, it will run just fine! So it seems to be something with creating it with Schtasks. Here is my co…

Can't format Soft-RAID5 on Windows Server 2003
by Guest Marcel- 7 replies
Hi, I have a noname SIL3114 4-port SATA-Controller on an ASROCK P4V88+ (VIA-chipset with 2-Port onboard sata). With RAID5-BIOS, Windows Server 2003 started formatting my 4-HD-Array but couldn't complete it ("the format did not complete successfully"). The same happens when I use the SATA-Controller with a simple BIOS without onboard-RAID functions. Neither Quick-format nor longformat could complete the format. I also tried different cluster- and volume-size with no success. Any ideas? Should I use another special format utility? Marcel

unknown program creating osc file eating up disk space
by Guest joe vaughan- 7 replies

I have a process that fires off on the 1st of every month. I can't locate where it's coming from, or who made it. My Trend anti-virus doesn't detect it as a virus. It's a process that continually renames itself something different every time it runs. It creates a random file name ending in .osc in my windows\temp directory. It eats up all my free space on my c:\ drive, causing my print jobs and other tasks to fail. I'm able to identify the process because it's an exe that's also put into the windows\temp directory. Today the exe name is YYB6A4.exe. Every month the exe icon is a dog. I kill the process, then delete the osc file. It appears to laun…

roaming profile won't delete
by Guest KearneyB- 7 replies

I'm having a problem with a network logon searching for a roaming profile even though the roaming profile path has been deleted from the user's properties on the server. Problem began when my PDC hard drive crashed and I wound up having to reformat and rebuilt a new PDC server from scratch, though the roaming profiles were stored on another drive that was not lost. However, in the new AD, I did not recreate the roaming profile path, but when the user logs on to the network, he's told his roaming profile cannot be fround. I went into the work station and checked the USER and deleted the RP path, but the problem persists. It also happens when I try to…

APC UPS causing crashes?
by Guest Anteaus- 7 replies

Server 2003 R2, also 2000 SP4. APC Back-UPS 650/750, USB signalling lead. No specialist software, standard Windows power-management settings in use. Both of these servers have shown problems with intermittent rebooting since the above type of UPS was connected. The 2000 server very occasionally, the 2003 daily. Since taking the UPS away the 2003 has been stable (touch wood!) A third server running Debian Linux also had issues last year with a memory-leak which was traced to the (distro's own) UPS-monitoring applet. Same UPS model. The Debian guys didn't seem to think there were any known bugs with their UPS-monitoring daemon. Doesn't seem to be pow…
