Start/Stop service with non-admin user
by Guest Steve Roy- 7 replies
Hi !, sorry for my english, i'm french speaking. Since many years, some users can start/stop service remotly on our Win2K0 SP4 server. The domain admin created GPO for this (giving acces for stop/start/pause some service). Since few weeks, we installed another server (Windows 2K3 SP1), with same setting, same ACL, same software. The GPO was deployed but this users cannot now start/stop this services. The only difference between this 2 installation is: 1 is Windows 2000SP4 and the other Win2K3 SP1. There is some limitation, or security setting with Win2K3 ? Can someone help me please ! Thanks ! Steve

Best way to replace a server and do clean install
by Guest Jack B. Pollack- 8 replies
We will be replacing our old Win2K3 Server with a new one shortly. Not only is the actual hardware antiquated, but the OS has been experiencing many problems over the last year and I look forward to a clean install. Since I am doing a clean install instead of some type of migration all of the users will have to be manually re-added to the domain. There are only 14 users so this is not a terrible task. My concern is that when I try to add the old user to the new domain it will create a new user account for them on their local machines and that all of their personal settings and desktop etc will be "lost". Am I making this into a bigger project then it really…

Hi We currently have machines (mostly winxp and linux) setup using static ip addresses, manually configured on each computer. We now want to implement DHCP and use reservations for all the PCs. However, we want to use the IP addresses they are already on (we can see these in DNS). What we need is a list of these IP addresses along with machine name and MAC address so that we can put them into the dhcp reservations, either manually or via some sort of import/export utility. Does anyone know an easy way around this ? arp -a seems a bit unreliable and doesn't give us machine name. thanks

WINS not working. Please Help.
by Guest skymax_taf- 0 replies

In one of our domains we run WINS to support Windows 98 machines. Recently, WINS stopped working and I have come to the end of my rope trying to figure out why. What I am seeing is: In System Event Viewer - Event ID: 4102 The connection aborted by the remote WINS. Remote WINS may not be configured to replicate with the server. (Getting this message on the forest level DC and on each local DC) Replication on each DC setup to push/pull per Microsoft standard instructions. WINs console, at Forest level, shows all DCs in lower domains. Each has a green arrow to the left of their name. dcdiag states - failed test systemlog Event ID: 0x40011006 RPC (call) se…

Something is editing jpegs on my server
by Guest Jordon- 8 replies

Yesterday I posted a question about auditing file access and I got that working fine, but now that it's working I have a completely different problem. Starting last Saturday I found a few jpeg images were being edited (and backed up, and that's what started this) during times when no one was in the building. The first day it was only a few. Sunday there were a few more. More on Monday. Last night there were over 90. Nothing else on the server (Win2k SP4) that was being backed up, was something that wouldn't normally get backed up every day. So I turned on object access auditing for the folder(s) that contained the images and I found they were edited by th…

Is 100k Handles too Much?
by Guest Computer Guru- 2 replies
My Windows Server 2003 SP2 server (IIS 6, MySQL, Tomcat, PostgreSQL, PHP via FastCGI) runs at a constant 90k-105k handles. The Limit is set at 2492408. I think there is something wrong since that's an insanely high count - but the server remains fast and stable, so I'm not sure. It's an x86, with 1GB of RAM (generally around 3/4ths is used). Is there something wrong or is this perfectly OK?

Confused about ASR process
by Guest Guy Kerr- 8 replies
I feel stupid asking this question since I've found no discussions about this and feel that I must be missing something. We're doing an office move and I want to create up-to-date ASR's for each of my servers (all Server 2003). I used Windows Backup and the wizard to generate the ASR. It instructs me to insert the floppy but in no time the floppy is full and I'm asked to insert another. The backup progress indicates that I've got THOUSANDS more files (depends on which server) to backup and based on that screen I'd have to be swapping out floppies all day. Am I doing something wrong here? I expected that the process would simply copy the critical…

User Profiles
by Guest aja44- 7 replies

I work in a HS environment and I am trying to standardize the look of the Default Profile every student gets the first time they logon and use roaming locked profiles. Here is what I have done: 1. Logon to a system as a "Template" account and make all required changes to background, desktop, start menu, IE settings, ect. 2. Reboot and login as the administrator and copied the Profile to DC\NETLOGON\Default User. 3. When my users first logon, they do not get the profile I specified, but when I login the 2nd time they do. Weird. But what I have found is that I have specified a particular background which is on every machine in the Default User …

NTP help
by Guest Domon- 4 replies

Hi My domain controller which is the PDC has encountered some warning and errors during NTP time synchronization. The errors are logged in this order. 1) Event 38 Source w32Time ( logged for a few times) 2) Event 47 source w32Time Time Provider NtpClient: No valid response has been received from manually configured peer <IP address> after 8 attempts to contact it. This peer will be discarded as a time source and NtpClient will attempt to discover a new peer with this DNS name. 3) Event 29 source w32Time The time provider NtpClient is configured to acquire time from one or more time sources, however none of the sources are currently ac…

Shared file in use/Read Only access question ...
by Guest E-Double- 7 replies
When one person is in, say, a Word or Excel document that is in a departmental folder that is shared by say 12-20 people in the department, and another user tries to open the doc that is already in use, the second user will receive the standard 'File in use, read only copy will only be available' (or something to that effect). Is there some way for Windows Server 2003 (or Active Directory?) to either notify the second user or for that second user to find out who the first user is who has the file open and exclusive write rights to that file? The problem is, for example with up to 20 peeps in a department the second user has to call up or check with up to …

NT Server migration question
by Guest cberends- 7 replies
I have a "old" windows nt 4.0 pdc on a domain that is no longer needed, and we want all nt4.0 domain to be dead. this is the last server in the domain. Issue is I need to migrate the ip, name, permissions, iis (ftp and IIS), files to a new/different domain without the least amount of headache to the users. This server has automated processing attached to it and of course know one has documented all this processes. This server is also acting as a file server for ftp/file shares. O one other thing it is having hardware issues and is it out of warrenty so I need a resolution soon before everything is forced to do things the hard way. Does anyone know h…

big trouble with Server - as KB933994
by Guest Trapulo- 9 replies
Hello, I added a Windows 2003 Server to an existing 2000 domain, and made it an additional domain controller. All ok, I restarted, I made GC, all worked fine. Then I restarted an other time... boom. Every crytical windows services don't start more. Only RPC works: others (COM+, network connections, shell hardware detection, etc) don't start. It seems as KB933994 describes: the old group policy didn't assign "impersonate a client after authentication" to Service and Network accounts, so I think that the replicated policy has blocked the 2003 system. Now? I've tried to update policy on the W2003 server, but it doesn't apply it. When I run a gpupdate, i…

minimum permission to connec to network printer
by Guest Ehren- 6 replies

Hello- I am having an issue on some of our "restricted access" computers in connecting to network printers. It says you do not have permission to connect to network printers when I browse to the location of the printer and right click it and click connect. I actually have a script set up that automatically maps the printer. When i add the user to the administrators group it works, when i remove them it doesnt. I am wondering what the minimum permissions or rights on the computer the user must have in order to map a network printer. Thanks!

Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard and 28 -- XP SP2 Clients
by Guest Krisk- 6 replies
We have Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard with 5 Client License. We also have 28 clients all running on XP SP2 laptops. The server has "dhcp server" and "file server" setup. On the server a folder is shared and the laptops map to that folder. The client computers are used for students so there could be multiple users per computer. There seems to be a problem when more then 5 computers are connected to the server. Do I need to have a license for each computer on the server for this and why? If I used a XP computer for a file server it would work. I thought the 5 client license was for SQL or other server type software. Any info would be great. Tha…
