-------- Original Message -------- Subject: Very strange vbscript issue. Date: Thu, 10 Apr 2008 15:17:16 -0400 From: Brian Cowan <brcowan@nospam.nospam> Newsgroups: microsoft.public.windows.server.scripting Hello all, this is my first post, so please be gentle... I am dealing with a customer with a Windows 2003 R2 Enterprise edition server (x86) with SP2. When they use a 3rd party web server, and it launches a vbscript, the scripting engine fails with what appears to be a "file not found" error. It essentially says it can't initialize the scripting engine because of this error. You may note that I don't have the exact error text... Well that's because…

SP2 kills major funtions of 2003 Server Standard R2

Hi all, I installed SP2 yesterday, and a whole bunch of features have stopped working. Help & Support, Search, and Run when selected from the Start button do not function (I get a message saying "Windows cannot create a shortcut here. Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead?"); the Administrative Tools, Network Connections, Portable Media Devices, Scanners and Cameras, and Scheduled Tasks links in Control Panel do not respond; I have shortcuts on the desktop to several of the Administrative Tools (AD Users & Computers, System Manager, etc) - the shortcuts still work but the icons for them have disappeared (they just have the…

taskbar icon balloon
by Guest j54ams- 1 reply

I reinstalled windows xp media center 2005 after installing a new hard drive. After doing so, the information balloons in the taskbar don't appear, just get popping sound. For instance, when using the safely remove hardware, I don't get the balloon stating it's safe to remove. Only hear the popping sound. When resting the cursor over an icon, I get the name of the program and right clicking brings up the menu. But, I can't get the information balloon.

Permissions Question

Take into consideration the following scenario: I have a Windows 2003 domain with a member file server. I have a share on this file server and the Shared permissions are set to Everyone - Full Control. I then have NTFS permissions set to local Administrators on the member filer server as well as a couple other domain security groups. This share is not accessible to anyone on the domain unless they are apart the of appropriate security group. However, I have another Windows Server 2003 server that is in a Workgroup that can access this share when logged in as the local Administrator. Is this normal behavior? The Windows 2003 domain member file server and th…

Mantatory Profile Woes
by Guest KWME- 1 reply

I'm running a Server 2003 network in a school setting where I'd like things to be pretty locked-down. I use both mandatory profiles and group policy to lock down user accounts. Lately I've had consistent errors when all users load the mandatory profile. The error message states that the profile is unavailable and that the error is that the system couldn't find the file specified. I've checked and rechecked the permissions on the share where the profile is located and they check-out. One thing I have noticed is that when I change the file name from ntuser.dat to ntuser.man the file type label doesn't change from "dat" to "man". It just stays on ".man"…

Strange File Permissions
by Guest Brian McGrew- 1 reply

Good morning, Running in a Win2K3/R2 (64-Bit) I'm seeing some very weird things happening with file permissions and ownership. I've got about 3TB of storage with multiple shares and I'm seeing entire file systems become owned by a random id like 0-24-036-303-630 and permissions being reset to read-only. Any idea why? My network is small enough that I can account for all users actions and I know it's not a user that's resetting them. Also I can be certain that I do not have a virus because this particular subnet is private and not on the net. Are there any utilities out there that I could use to forcibly reset ownership and permissions just in case the…

APC UPS causing crashes?
by Guest Anteaus- 7 replies

Server 2003 R2, also 2000 SP4. APC Back-UPS 650/750, USB signalling lead. No specialist software, standard Windows power-management settings in use. Both of these servers have shown problems with intermittent rebooting since the above type of UPS was connected. The 2000 server very occasionally, the 2003 daily. Since taking the UPS away the 2003 has been stable (touch wood!) A third server running Debian Linux also had issues last year with a memory-leak which was traced to the (distro's own) UPS-monitoring applet. Same UPS model. The Debian guys didn't seem to think there were any known bugs with their UPS-monitoring daemon. Doesn't seem to be pow…

Download Correct 64 bit OS Version
by Guest Scott- 2 replies

I'm setting up a MOSS07 database server which will be Server 2003 Enterprise R2 SP2 64 bit (x64). However, when I access the MVLS site to download that product under terms of Volume Licensing, that OS does not appear. The only choices are Server 2003 Enterprise R2 SP2 or Server 2003 Enterprise R2 SP2 64 bit Itanium. Where am I supposed to obtain the correct OS download under Volume Licensing?

Password Policy + Cached user
by Guest FL- 4 replies

We have some users who mainly work on the road and rarely come into the office. The user logs in cached and then will vpn to the office if required for network files, etc... Mail is connected via Outlook RPC. If we enable password policy for these users, they will get a message after they run a vpn connection to the office that the password will need to be changed but can't log off and log in as their VPN will drop. We are not using the Microsoft VPN so selecting the "Logon Using Dial-Up Connection" doesn't work with 3rd party VPN. What options (if any) do we have to ensure a cached user still requires a password change but can still log on successf…

In our domain we have 2 DCs, both with Windows Server 2003 Enterprise SP2 installed. We have obtained 2 copies & licenses of Windows Server 2003 Enterprise R2 in order to perform upgrade, but the installation media does not incoroporate any Service Pack. Should we expect to be any problems in installing R2 on those servers due to SP mismatch? Thanks in advance

I've installed RD client on one of the 2kpro PCs on the network and when I try to use it co connect to other computers it works just fine. The problem is when I go the other way round so connecting say from the 2003SBS to that 2kpro machine. I'm getting a message saying that I cannot connect to that computer as remote connection might be not be enabled on it. How do I go about enabling it then? There is no Remote tab as in XP. I found some articles about installing TS on it from Add/ Remove Windows components but I jus can't find it there. Does anyone know how to get it work? Thanks yaro

Incomplete offline files...
by Guest Jake- 0 replies

Hi, We have problems with Windows' 'Make available Offline' feature. Despite that I have tried both the offline files cache reinit tips here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/230738 ... more than half of some users' offline files are still marked with 'Incomplete local copy', after a new, full syncronization. Hence they are not available offline. Does the server include any managing functionality for controlling the workstations' offline files? I have only attacked the problem from the workstation side (notebooks). This problem started to occur for quite a few of our users around a month ago and I don't want to reinstall their windows to get r…

Hello: I need to configure DNS between 2 domains. One is Windows 2000 and the zones are Active Directory Intergated, and the other is Windows 2003 and they are Active Directory Integrated as well. From my 2000 domain in need to pull secondary for the 2003 domain. I tried adding it as a secondary and made sure the zone transfers was configured correctly, but the zone will not transfer. Is there something I am missing? Harrison Midkiff

Running ntbackup in Windows Server 2008
by Guest Marcos- 2 replies

I am trying to run ntbackup.exe under windows server 2008. The reason for this is due to the defficiencies and limitations in windows server backup - specifically, I am trying to backup files from a drive > 2TB. I have followed the instructions here: http://cs.thefoleyhouse.co.uk/blogs/karl/archive/2008/02/10/how-to-backup-exchange-2007-on-server-2008.aspx But I am getting this error in my applicataion log: Volume Shadow Copy Service error: An error occured calling QueryInterface from IVssCoordinator to IVssShim. hr = 0x80004002. Anyone have any ideas how to fix this?
