Hi When I create any user account we always have to mention user’s employ code in exchange advance tab-> Custom attribute-> extentionAttribute1 in user properties. After that when we check that user account properties in outlook address book (GAL) it shows the employ code in EmpCode field. What is this EmpCode field, is this field is created by the administrator or it is default. If it is created by administrator, Please tell me how it is possible. We are working on windows 2003 and exchange 2003.

Measuring printer traffic
by Guest Jeroen- 0 replies
We're about to decide to move some servers from the HQ to branch sites or move most of the servers to a virtual environment hosted in a datacenter. The decision is depending on the amount of printing traffic being generated. Is there an easy way to measure printing traffic? The idea was to move storage, database and terminal servers to a datacenter with a high speed backbone. Offices, including HQ, connect to the datacenter using a permanent VPN. Each office gets it's own printserver that hosts the printers for the specific office. Is this the best way to do or are there other ways? Jeroen

Terminal Server
by Guest Candace Sparks- 1 reply

I am installing a Windows 2003 Server at a client site tomorrow. I am installing the OS at my office, then taking to client site. They have a domain controller now, this will be an additional server to act as their terminal server. When I set it up on their network, will I set it up at that time as a member server? I have never added another server to an existing network before. They have terminal server licenses on the existing server. I have to move them to the other server and do not know how to do that? Also, they will be accessing the database for their main software on the main server. Do I map drivers for each terminal server user, so the…

Lost all security permissions.
by Guest Eli- 7 replies

Need help with file security permissions. There are a lot of files that for some unknown reason lost all permissions info. If I try to open or copy them I get access denied error. Using cacls command doesn’t help – denied. If I go to security tab there are no permissions set. I have to take over ownership of the file, apply and then close it. Then open security tab again and add “system” account full access, then apply. After that I can see all the permissions that were supposed to be there originally. There are about 5000 files like that spread out around 100s of different folders with different hierarchy. Anyone know why it could of happen and how to…

trouble creating/accessing a share on a server
by Guest biff- 4 replies
I have access to a server and want to try to share out a folder so I can access it over the network. I have shared the folder and then given a domain group I am in full control via the share permissions. I have also given this same domain group full control of this folder via NTFS permissions. I can map the drive OK. But when I try to access it, I get "X:\ is not accessible, Access is denied" Why would I get this error if I have full control in both share and NTFS permissions?

TechNet Eval 2003 R2...
by Guest KingBuzzo- 3 replies

Hi Fellas: If I am using the media and license key from my TechNet subscription, is it possible to upgrade the license to retail after-the-fact? If it is, should I NOT do the product activation (with the TechNet key) at all and just perform the activcation with the retail key when I get it or should I activate with the TechNet key and then perform an in-place upgrade when I get the new key? Also, if I have to re-install when I receive a new key, what happens at the service pack/hotfix level? Would I have to re-apply? Does it keep any settings at all? Thanks!

ntbackup woes
by Guest Tim Judd- 6 replies

I have 1 servers inhouse, that is using a LTO Ultrium 2 SCSI drive to do the backups. When previously using NTBACKUP.exe to do backups to the LTO automatically, it was working. Now, when the script is identical, it fails to find the backup. Error is: "Cannot locate the specified media or backup device. This backup operation will terminate." However, running the same job interactively in ntbackup interface, it works fine. What might I be missing? I'm thinking it's a command line paramater, but it looks all fine. C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntbackup.exe backup "@C:\Documents and Settings\ntbackup\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBa…

copy url onto user's desktop
by Guest Calvin C.- 5 replies

I simply try to create a logon script to copy an url to each user's desktop. The script is written as below, copy "\\sever\share\Requests Form" "C:\documents and settings\%username%\desktop\" "Requests Form" is just a shortcut copied from my favorites. When I run the script, it dosen't copy that url no matter what. However, it works if I try to copy a file, for example test.txt by using the same script like, copy \\sever\share\test.txt "C:\documents and settings\%username%\desktop\" What have I missed? Thanks Calvin

"workgroup" server Win2003 sbs?
by Guest bill allemann- 8 replies
I think earlier versions had an option to config as workgroup or domain server. Is there any way to make win2003 act as workgroup server? It didn't seem like there was any choice during setup for other than domain server. It created a new domain on the LAN, and the existing PC's were in a named workgroup, which shows up separately when browsing the local network. I'm dealing with a small LAN with a few PC's, one of which is XP Home, and it doesn't appear that I can make it a client computer on the new server.

server rejoined to domain with same name question
by Guest Mike Bonvie- 2 replies

Hi, Maybe this isn't a big deal but wanted to validate. I took a member server off the domain via computer name settings (joined to workgroup) restarted rebuilt the server about an hour later rejoined to the domain when a server is joined, by default it becomes a member of the computers OU for GPO purposes, we move the server object manually to another OU (named Servers) the server object was still in the Servers OU when rejoined (in a disabled state), the created date was the original time the original server was built, but the last modified date was the time it was rejoined again to the domain. Theres no scary event logs on the server, it …

Kerberos Issues
by Guest josephr38@hotmail.com- 0 replies

We have 4 Windows 2003 DCs in our office, all of which are also Global Catalogs (GC). We are seeing in event viewer multiple Kerberos errors: 0xd KDC_ERR_BADOPTION and 0x7 KDC_ERR_S_PRINCIPAL_UNKNOWN. Initially, we thought that the GC or AD was not replicating correctly because every server was a GC - after reading a Microsoft article that seemed to suggest that having every DC in one domain a GC would inhibit replication. GC was removed from one DC, and the 0x7 errors disappeared on that DC; however, the began again this morning. So, it is starting to sound like more of an AD issue than a GC issue. The other point is that apresent we do not hav…

I am trying to download a backup copy of the main database from a Windows 2003 server. This has been done everyday at 1:15 for the last 11 months using a script (with the built-in command line ftp utility). Not one of those transfers failed. [i know that because an MD5 fingerprint is taken before and after]. Today all 5 of my attempted tranfers failed. The first 3 using the command line utility. The last two using FileZilla. The first two transfers both failed at exactly the same point (byte-wise); as did the last two transfers. Transfers 1 & 2 were trying to copy version 1 of the backup file. Transfers 3,4,5 were trying to copy version 2 of the backup fil…

Desktop items on Roaming profiles
by Guest Jim in Cleveland- 3 replies

Can someone please explain how roaming profiles work regarding items that are put on the desktop? Here is my scenario: We use roaming profiles in our 2003 domain enviroment. Client machines are XP. User logs on to computer A, creates a Word doc and saves it to her desktop then logs off. Late, she logs onto computer B. Since this is the first time she logs onto computer B, it pulls her profile from the server. Word document is there so she edits the Word document, saves it and logs off. Next day, she logs onto computer A. Word document is there but the changes that she made when she was on computer B are not! Now if she were to log onto computer C…

Authentication Process for Multi-domain Forest??
by Guest chrispogi05- 0 replies

Hi all, We currently have a windows 2000/2003 forest with two domains in two different sites. We have a dedicated line between the two sites (domainA and domainB). When the dedicated line is down, a user from DomainA cannot log onto a different computer in DomainB he has not logged on before. What is the process of authentication when userA tries to log onto a computer of domainB?? does the initial request go to the DC of the computer, or to that of the user? And when is the GC contacted... Thanks, Chris -- chrispogi05 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ chrispogi05's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/memb…

DHCP: Predefined Options
by Guest Herbert Ehlert- 1 reply

hi, just created a "Predefined Option" in DHCP. But i was to fast and entered something wrong. Now i want to delete the whole thing..... to add a correct one (PXEClient) after that. But the button to delete is inactive. How can i delete this one? Can't add another one, because it says, the option-number (060) is still in use. Microsoft say on their website: "By default, standard DHCP options and BOOTP extensions as described in RFC 2132 are predefined at DHCP servers running Windows Server 2003 for use and cannot be removed using this procedure." But i created this entry, so it must be possible to delete it. Please help :) h.e.
