Testing environment question
by Guest JohnB- 3 replies

I am in the process of studying for a MCP, and have run into a problem. I have the following setup: - I have setup a PC with a 180-day eval copy of Windows Server 2003. - It's a home network with a NetGear router. The router is setup for DHCP. - There are 4 computers on the network, counting the 2003 server. - On one of the PC's I have install Microsoft's Virtual PC. The VPC has been joined to the domain. My problem is I can't use any of the 2003 Administrative MMC's from the VPC. It says it can't find the domain, even though the VPC was joined to the domain without a problem. I'm guessing it's a DNS issue. The reason I say that is, the VPC doesn'…

2003 Print Server and Client Driver Updates
by Guest Aaron- 0 replies

Can someone either explain or point me to some documentation on how an XP client interacts with a Server 2003 print server in so far as drivers go? We're having some strange errors with a simple script that runs at logon and adds a default printer to the XP client. We recently built a new print server and modified the scripts to point to the new server. The new server has updated printer drivers and from what we can tell, if the client attempts to download the new driver, the script errors out. Our suspicion is that this is because the user doesn't have permission to update the printer drivers (which we know to be the case). If we log on as an administrator …

change FQDN on Windows 2000 Server

I inherited a windows 2000 (native mode) network with FQDN set to companyname.local.com. According to the KB292541, I can rename it to companyname.local, but it's time consuming and not recommended. Can someone point out the problems I may run in to if FQDN is kept unchanged.

2008 Server x64 Print Server Driver Support?
by Guest Usenet- 0 replies

I"m struggling to find a simple guide to what is required in terms of printer drivers if I wanted to have a Windows 2008 Server x64 act as a file and print server. My understanding is that the driver installed on the server *has* to be a Vista compatible WHQL x64 driver i.e. I couldn't use a Windows 2003 Server x64 driver regardless of whether it's WHQL or not? It's one of those small things that could put a seriously big dent in any plans to pilot 2008 server as we all know how far behind many printer manufacturers are in updating their drivers. Our clients are primarily 32 bit XP and Vista with some x64 XP. I'm reading the Microsoft Windows 2008 …

Server 2003: Problem making one user's MyDocs/Desktop availableoffline
by Guest slkstuff2@gmail.com- 0 replies

Anyone having "access denied" issues with Offline Files in Server 2003? I have one user who keeps getting Sync Manager error messages to that effect when she tries to make her My Documents and Desktop folders (redirected to her user folder on the server) available offline. Usenet and various Google queries all seem to point to a permissions issue at the root of the share...but this problem isn't affecting anybody else on the domain; I'd think that if permissions was the culprit, Offline Files would be broken for everyone, not just her. I've tried the standard stuff to troubleshoot: reset her Offline Files cache, unjoined and rejoined the domain, and even red…

Hi, Running dfs on a Win2003 box, with trend micro AV. The system process is constantly at 99%, meaning the server is ruunning extremely slow. Is this because of the AV or is it a known problem. Btw, this is one dfs server which is one of 5 on the network, with replication traffic between them. Thanks for any advice,

RRAS VPN and DNS Issues
by Guest Beaon- 1 reply

Hello, I have random clients whos DNS will not work over RRAS. To them they think that the VPN has failed but low and behold you can ping all the hosts on the serverside. Now sometimes DNS will work, and sometimes it will not. It seems awfully random. For some clients I can add the IP's in their etc/hosts file but that practice does not solve the issue when VPN clients need to connect to a PC that receives it's IP via DHCP. Does anyone know what might cause this and how I can make it work? This is happening to me on multiple clients across multiple companies but all with a similar RRAS setup. Some use DHCP to receive their IP's some use RRAS to receive th…

Problems with FTP behind Windows 2003 NAT
by Guest Jim in Arizona- 0 replies

We have a Win2003 server as our proxy running NAT. When attempting to FTP into any ftp server using a command prompt (DOS FTP), it will connect but any commands beyond that will just hang, like 'ls' or 'dir'. I looked around for a solution and found that if you issue this command on the NAT box that it should fix the problem: netsh routing ip nat add ftp I then restarted the RRAS service. I found that using windows explorer for FTP works fine, but when using the command line FTP, it still hangs in the same way: C:\WINDOWS>ftp ftp.microsoft.com Connected to ftp.microsoft.com. 220 Microsoft FTP Service User (ftp.microsoft.com:(none)): anonymous 331 A…

Cannot make firewall changes after implementing SP2
by Guest Brewhaus- 7 replies

We have never had a need to worry about this issue until now, but after installing SP2 on our Windows 2003 SBS system, we cannot use the Internet Connection Wizard to make changes to the firewall settings (we also cannot add new users, but that can be discussed separately). I have read that ICF is replaced by Windows Firewall in SP1, and have tried to disable ICF on the network connection, but the option is not there. When going to the Advance tab, I show Windows Firewall, with a Settings button, but when clicking the button I receive an error- "Windows Firewall cannot run because another program or service is running that might use the network address t…

Hi, I've got a problem where I receive a 1104 error in a FoxPro app that is being run in the following configuration. File Server (Server A) has a Share with a Foxpro App and data files. Users are accessing the app and data from their desktops through the network share. Other users are opening a citrix session to a Terminal Server (Server B) and then running the app from the share. Some users are using remote desktop on server (Server C) to access the application and data. Users that are logged into Server B & C sometimes receive an error message 1104. (Error Reading File) Server A, B & C are all Windows 2003 Servers After doing rese…
