Network Printer Setup with Login Scripts???
by Guest Tom- 2 replies

Hello, We are in the process of changing servers over the Christmas holiday. We are a school network that has 12-15 network printers. Is it possible to run a command in a script (Ex. NET USE LPT1: \\SERVER\SHARED_PRINTER /PERSISTENT:YES) to load the printers when the students login so that we don't have to go to each machine to load printers? Thanks for your time. Tom

Hi, We have to restore a SQL Server database from backup that is of size around 20GB. However, the backup staff restore it to another server that runs as IIS + FTP Server (Not the one where SQL Server installed). We have attempted to transfer the file from the FTP Server but not successful. And we would like to know what is the best way to copy the file across ? Thanks Peter

Ports to check for authtication/AD group membership traffic
by Guest DaveT- 2 replies
Hi, I'm having a problem with a trusted domian that has lost it's access to our server. When I try and re-add the trusted domain's group to my file share\folders, I can see the domain listed in "locations", but it cannot resolve any users/groups in that domain. I think the router is stopping something on the way, could anyone let me know what ports/traffic I should be looking for? The trust os one way outgoing, external trust and I have validated this in Domains & trusts. the problem I have is that the router is entirely looked after by the other company, and I am not sure what to ask them to check. Many thanks. Dave.

Question about setup /PrepareSchema - Preparing the Active Directo
by Guest dean.carrefour- 9 replies
I'm trying to install the Exchange Server 2007 SP1. The docs say to prep the active directory prior to installation. I'm following this article for the ad prep: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb125224.aspx When I get to step #2 and run setup /ps from a command prompt, I get a small dialog from 'Windows Setup' that pops up and says "Please go to the Control Panel to install and configure system components." with only an OK button on it. Is that normal? If not, what am i doing wrong. I am just starting this process (SP1 install) and this is the very first step I've performed.

unable to register ocx file
by Guest Matt- 1 reply

Hi, I’ve been struggling trying to register an ocx file on a Windows Server 2003 SP2 EE box off and on for the past couple days. Tech support from the software vendor has been of no help, they say they’ve never seen this before. Of course the installer is supposed to register the file, but it errors out with: Error 1904.Module D:\Program Files\Ap…\Dsd.ocx failed to register. HRESULT – 2147220473. Contact your support personnel. The file “dsd.ocx” is indeed copied to the programs directory, but not registered. If I try to manually register I get: LoadLibrary(“D:\Program Files\AP…\dsd.ocx”) failed – The specified module could not be found. I should me…

by Guest Don Gra- 2 replies

Hi, We are currently trying to certify our device drivers for Windows Server 2008 RC1 but the person running the WHQL tests tells me that we need the operating system symbols in order to perform one of the WHQL tests (which we need to run successfully in order to submit for certification). Does anyone know where I can get the symbols for Server 2008 RC1? (I need both the x64 and x86 symbols.) Thanks, Don. -- Don Gra

Windows 2003 Print Server Printer Driver Change
by Guest TuxEdu- 0 replies
Hi, I recently have had an issue with Dell 1710n. They won't print, you cant send a job to them to print. It turns out that the driver needs to be changed from 1710n to 1710n PS3. This is on a windows 2003 R2 Print server. So no big deal except there are alot of these printers. I was wondering if any one know of a way to automate changing the driver from 1710n to 1710n PS3. I have googled VBscripts and windows command line tools and have found nothing. If anyone has anything that might help it would be much appriciated. Thank you.

DEP Issue in Win2K3 -- All options greyed out.
by Guest Noctaire- 2 replies
Ok, this one has me scratching my head a bit so I figured I'd see if anyone here (maybe an MVP?) had an idea. Win2K3 Ent box, not sure offhand what patch level. Going into the options for DEP (System Properties/Advanced/Performance Options/Data Execution Prevention tab) I find EVERYTHING is greyed out. Thing is, DEP is NOT disabled on the box though. Looking in the boot.ini, the box has /NoExecute=OptOut. I'm logging in with administrator rights, other boxes in the enterprise are configurable here but not this one. Any suggestions where to look?

questions about 2008 rc1
by Guest Art Cube- 1 reply

I am not certain this is the place to ask but the server.prerelease news group does not seem to have a lot of activity. I am running a dual xeon cloverton quad core using Svr2008 rc1 32 bit x86 with 8gb ram and am seeing some hiccups at times. Whole server stops for a while even loosing some connections as I mostly remote desktop into it. Also, sound is not available on remote desktop - will this be fixed? Also screen is only 16bit color in remote desktop will this be fixed? No Media Center install Server 2008 as well, will this be fixed? or is this not going to be available due to fear. I am running this in parallel with a dual xeon which uses svr…

what server spec for 2003 server
by Guest Glenn Clark- 1 reply
Hi all I need to install a new server. This server will be used by around 50 people (30 on site and 20 remotely) The 30 people on site will be connecting to sql via 3rd party application installed on their own pc's and will not be using the server to login. The 20 remote users need to connect to the 3rd party application via RDP(to be run on the server) and the application will connect to sql which will also be installed on the box. Can anyone suggest what sort of spec machine would be good to run 2003 especially with around 20 rdp users Cheers

Open access to share via VPN
by Guest Joe- 3 replies

I have remote VPN users that I want to be able to map a drive to a UNC share on a Win2K3 server. The VPN connection uses IAS for authentication with AD. I have created a share and setup read access for 'domain users' and 'anonymous'. However, users are still prompted for domain credentials in order to map the drive. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate the login prompt? Thanks, Joe

Very strange conflict
by Guest Wiedmer- 1 reply
All, I have a twilight zone-kind of a conflict and I'm looking for ideas to try and solve the problem. I use Windows Server to connect to my business computer from home. Windows XP on both sides, obviously. I connect to my VPN, then log on to my computer, usually without problems. Sometimes, when a very large file is open on my business computer (a large ppt, for example), my home computer simply shuts down as soon as the application shows up on my home screen. This happens a few times in a row. I actually get someone in my office to close the large file, or restart my computer in the office, to then be able to log on by VPN. Any thoughts about this?

I am trying to apply SP1 for EXchange 2007. The server is a x64 WIn 2003 R2 box, fully patched. I get an error during the initial phase saying the DTC service must be started. If I try to start the service manually then I get an 1053 service did not respond in a timely fashion error. I can also see the this error message Application popup: MSDTC.EXE - Entry Point Not Found : The procedure entry point MtxCluGetDtcRegValue could not be located in the dynamic link library MTXCLU.DLL. Laptop not NTFS before being added to domain
by Guest Laphan- 3 replies
Hi All I support a number of schools and we have just installed a Win2k3 server with AD infrastructure at one of them. Everything was fine apart from one thing, added a laptop to the domain and then realised that even though the laptop was running WinXP Professional SP2, the file structure of the HD is FAT32 and not NTFS. I know that I need to do the convert command to change the HD from FAT32 to NTFS, but is there any adverse affects adding the laptop to the domain before the conversion? Should I put the laptop back to a workgroup and then re-add it to the domain after conversion? Thanks
