DC Promo failure...
by Guest Axelar- 2 replies

Hi I'm new to server admin and i need a few advices... I need to synchronise two servers, a SBS 2003 and a 2003 standard. System logs on the 2003 standard say synchronisation is impossible cause too much time has past since last succesfull synch (event id 2042). I've tried to use dcpromo on the 2003 standard to pass it in members mode instead of domain controlers, but it fails too. As you can see i'm far from being able to make it works, but the worse is i just don't know where to start to resolve this problem. what's the best way to ensure synchronisation ? All links, tips, advices, how-to are welcome :) Thanks in advance...

mount WebDAV folder as local drive letter
by Guest George Valkov- 0 replies

I installed a Web server that supports Web DAV on IIS6, Windows 2003 Service Pack 2. It is accessible from the Internet, only ports 80 and 443 can pass through the firewall. Let's call it: http://www.mywebdav.com On the client side: Windows XP service pack 2, Internet Explorer 7 is installed, WebClient service is started automatically. I can open My Computer, click Tools, Map Network Drive, in the Folder field type: http://www.mywebdav.com/userhome/pub/ or type: \\http://www.mywebdav.com\userhome\pub and then click Finish. This will mount the WebDAV folder as a local drive letter. So far so good, this is the desired behaviour and it works. However fo…

A couple XP clients not renewing IP on bootup....

Hi Everyone I have a native windows 2000/XP/2003 network with about 40 clients and two Active Directory domain controllers running 2003 server with SP2. Domain controller 1 (DC1) is hosting DHCP, WINS and DNS and Domain controller 2 (DC2) is hosting a backup DNS server. Recently, a few of my users (3 to be exact) reported that they couldn't access their home drives (home drive = network share to \ \dc1\home$\%username% that's mapped by the user's user account in Active Directory). Upon further investigation, it appears that when the computer is rebooted it loses its IP and doesn't regain it until it gets into windows. However, since it doesn't have an IP d…

RID, GUID, SID...
by Guest Robert Bollinger- 0 replies

Hello All - I have a fairely simple question about the nature of SID,RID,GUID. here is what i understand: SID - Security IDentifier, IDentifies any account (Computer, User, Group). GUID - Globally unique identifier, is a number that is assigned to each (and that means any) object in ad. RID - Relative Identifier - is assigned to each domain controller in the domain, and therefore is used when new objects are created) here is my question: Do the above read like this: S-XXX-XXX-SID R-XXX-XXX-RID G-XXX-XXX-XXX-GUID? all on the same line or are they 3 sepereate numbers? how do i view all of these numbers and where are they? Please Advise... …

Limitation on number of LUNs?
by Guest Nick Payne- 0 replies
I've noticed that if I zone too many LUNs from a SAN to a Windows server, the server gets very slow to boot. It just sits at the Win2003 splash screen for 15 minutes or longer before progressing to eventually the login screen. Also, once a large number of disks have been zoned, disk management gets to the state where it does not allow any disks to be partitioned. I've tried with Dell 2950 and 6850 servers running Win2003 Enterprise x64 with SP2 and all current patches, and Emulex LPe11002 or LPe1105 HBAs with the current EMC driver from Emulex. SAN is an EMC CX380. If I zone only a dozen or so LUNs, then there is no problem - server boots normally and dis…

Services for Unix
by Guest Clayton Baker- 1 reply

To All, I have been researching how to un-install services for Unix as well as the affect it will have on the current file system on which it resides. I spent some time on the Chat but they could not come up with any positive info. Can anyone supply good info on how I can un-install SFU and the affects after the fact? We are getting ready to move into a new VM/San environment and I really do not want to carry SFU with me. In then meantime I want to experiment with disabling the services but I am not sure what I will break doing so. Any feed back will be great. Windows 2003 Server on Apple server hardware?
by Guest Unfriendly Fire- 4 replies

OK, I know that you may feel that my request is as screwy as I feel asking it, but my CIO is an Apple fanatic and you know how those people can get when attempting new converts in their computer holy war... Anyway, my boss told me about my CIO's idea of replacing our aging HP/Compaq and IBM server hardware with Intel-based Apple server hardware, but still running Windows 2003 Server. I anticipate lost of problems, but the first problem that comes to my mind is driver compatibility. Has anyone done this in a production environment? I'm not even excited about trying it in the lab... Any feedback would be appreciated, especially in a format that I coul…

Removing an Enterprise CA from the domain?
by Guest markm75- 0 replies

I have an enterprise CA (non-DC) in the domain, which was previously a subordinate of the main CA on a now dead server called (SERVERDC)... So its chain was something like ServerDC/ENTCA Now that serverDC is gone, this is a problem, so i've installed a new Enterprise main CA on the new DC server called ServerDCB. So its an all in one solution for our single domain. Now i need to figure out what needs to be done to remove the ENTCA from that server? (I've already removed all active directory objects associated with ServerDC).. Do i just goto the ENTCA server (the old one) and remove it from add/remove programs.. Thanks...

Auditing on a folder
by Guest davidb- 0 replies

Hi, I have been trying to set up Auditing on a member server. I need to audit all the subfolders within a certain shared folder to find out who has been moving folders around within the share. I enabled object auditing in the local security policy on the server, and then I went to the top folder - right-clicked and added into the auditing section the group of users I need to monitor. I then set the relevant attributes to be logged ('Write Attributes' Successful, 'Delete Subfolders and Files' Successful, 'Delete' Successful) Nothing is logged in the security event log? I tried adding a username directly in case it didn't like the use of a user group, but i…

How can I access ISA Server remotely
by Guest Kevin- 1 reply
Hi, My company uses Windows 2003 Standard Edition + ISA 2004 SP3 to control internet access. I installed ISA 2004 with local administrator after I added the ISA server to Domain, but I can not log in remotely by VNC when I stop ISA Firewall. I am not sure what the problem is. One more problem, after I installed ISA and wanted to add Domain user to control ISA, there was a error about RPC. So I stop RPC filter and it is OK now. But I do not know if it has any influence?

Windows Services will not start
by Guest Todd- 3 replies

I have a windows 2003 server that has Exchange running on it. Yesterday the server started to freeze and upon reboot it hung on applying personal settings. I restarted in safe mode and made sure that the APC service was disabled. System rebooted after about 3 hours. Once restarted IIS would not start and therefore exchange was not working. I ran msconfig and did a diagnostic start up and they system started relatively quickly. I then changed to normal startup and shut down the Server, upon restart none of the services would start, message is Configuration Manager: plug and play service or some other service is not running. The only service that is running …

server2003 hangs every day at 6am?
by Guest geek-y-guy- 0 replies

Hi All: I have a server2003 x64 std with sp2 server running SQL 2005 that hangs every day at 6am local time. The server's in a colo cabinet, and when it happens, I have some remote hands powercycle the server. When I log back into the server, I'm prompted with the "what caused the last unexpected shutdown?" screen and I select "system unresponsive". I thought it might have something to do with automatic updates, but automatic updates are disabled. The SQL server has scheduled events that run every hour, with nothing special occurring at this hour, and they all run without incident up until the freeze. There's nothing in the application or system logs (…

netbios alias
by Guest Ruud Boersma- 1 reply

Hi all, Did not know where to post this question, so i'm posting it in general. Following problem: Old server is migrated to new server. We need to maintain the old unc path like \\oldserver\share. This means the new server needs a second computername (netbios alias). Someone told me to create an DNS cname, but this does not work for netbios. So I found an article describing howto create an netbios alias (or multiple aliasses) using the registry editor. By creating a reg_sz OptionalNames in parameters in lanmanserver(hkey_local_machine/system/currentcontrolset/services/lanmanserver, i can succesfully create a second netbios id. I have to create an addit…

Server Rebooting
by Guest Woody140284- 2 replies

Hello, For some reason, on both of our DC's, when ever you choose to log off, the server reboots. I have made sure that it is definitely log off I am pressing and it also happens if one user is logged in and you log in with another user, forcing a log off. It also seems that it always happens when there is a reboot needed due to updates. This could be coincidental though. We are running Server 2003 Standard Edition Service Pack 2 on them both. Thanks Carl

Does anyone recognize these files?
by Guest Elaine F.- 3 replies
We have recently discovered the existence of some very strange files on 2 of our many Windows 2003 servers. The files contain no legible information, just many, many lines of short, random strings. Some of the files are actually empty. The files appeared at the root of the D: drive which makes me suspect some application other than Windows, however when we asked the vendor of the 1 app that is running on the servers, they claimed these files were not related. Our virus scanner did not pick up these files as being infected so I have to believe they are somehow legitimate. The naming convention of these files are similar to: s1us.8v s1us.48 s3mc.e2 s2…
