windows w2k3 domain server - issue
by Guest jrj- 5 replies

Hello, I have added a new domain controller to my domain. It was setup as a file and print server. The users have no problem saving files and printing. However when a user tries to execute a program on a share which is located on another server the following message appears: Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have appropriate permission to access them. I do not have this problem from my other domain controller, so I figure it is a setting on the server. It not a firewall setting because I have turned off the fire to verify that. I just cannot find what needs to be changed. Does anyone have a idea?? jim

Hi, We have two domains, DomainA.local and DomainB.local on different w2003r2 domain controllers and separated subnets. When I take a workstation which is a member of DomainA.local and connect it to DomainB.local and try to login with a_valid_username@DomainB.local it complains that the domain (DomainB.local) is not available. It thought that a computer account would be created the first time this workstation logs in to DomainB.local and its user should get access according to the DomainB.local user account used. What am I missing in this scenario? jake

I wasn't sure wher to post this, if it needs to go somewhere else, I apologize. I am running sbs 2003 SP2, I am setting up 4 dell vostro 200 workstations. I have successfully setup 3 of the 4. The 4th workstation does not allow me to map a network drive to the server. In fact when I look at the network using explore I can see all the computers on the network, but I cannot see the server. I can see the server and from the other 3 workstations. Any help is appreciated, Thanks

Hi, I am trying to deploy the office 2007 compatibility pack. I have an sbs 2003 and all computers are Windows XP. All users are domain users. For a reason I can't figure out, the .msi is not deploying. Everything worked fine in my lab. If I look at the event viewer, I only get the info that the modification of the installation setting have applied successfully (event id 308). Normally I should also have another eventid saying that it was installed but it's not there. I've tried to find how I could enable debug logging but only found the answer for windows 2000 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/249621 The registry entry is not there on sbs 2003. How c…

Restoring Shadow Copies to a different server
by Guest matt@ukngroup.com- 0 replies

I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has previous experience with this topic... I'd like to restore Volume Shadow Copies (from a backup tape) to a different Windows instance to that from which they originally came from - in essence the physical server has had a Windows 2003 rebuild, and I've been requested to restore some files from VSS data from the old server, so that the data is available on the new instance. I'm finding that this topic is not really covered in the existing documentation, and wonder if anyone has successfully completed a similar project before, and if so, how it was done. Thanks in advance, Matt

Hi I posted this a bit ago but no one as given me any ideas as to what it could be. I would reall appreciate any input regarding this matter Hi We have several hundred remote users. It has come to my attention that when they VPN in they don't update their DNS records automatically. This can only it can be done by running the ipconfig /registerdns command. We have a RAS server on the network and two DHCP servers which assign the clients IP addreses. Both DHCP servers are relay agents for the RAS. I have checked DHCP and it is set too "Always dynamically update A records and PTR records" both on the server level and on the scope. I think the problem maybe…

I installed server 2003 standard and have a broadband connection and the router is providing NAT DHCP and DNS Through the gateway. On the server I have disabled the DHCP service. The server can go on line but is using enhanced security on internet explorer. I setup active directory then I joined a workstation to the domain. This workstation cannot access the internet if the server is on whether it is joined into the domain or not. When I turn the server off and reboot the work station the workstation will the go on line. What do I need to do?

/PAE and /3 gb
by Guest Mark Bohlsen- 1 reply

We have a Windows 2003 Enterprize Server with 8 gig of memory. The main application running on this server is Lotus Notes. Since this is a 32 bit application it apparently can only use 2 gig of memory unless we choose to enable the /3 gb switch. We already have the /pae switch enabled. I wondered if that's even required. Anyway, we want the Lotus Notes application to utilize beyond the 2 gig limit. I guess the question is first, is this advisable, and secondly, if we use this switch does that automatically leave the OS only 1 gig? Lotus suggests using the switch in this way "/3GB /Userva=2800 ", because there testing has had positive results with t…

Hi there, Is there a way to create services on windows server(regedit, etc)? I want to run a batch file and update just the batch file and just restart the service in order to upgrade it to a newer software version, unlike the autoexec.nt which requires removal/reinstallation of service and is more awkward. Hi all I need to install a new server. The 20 remote users need to connect to the 3rd party application via RDP(to be run on the server) and the application will connect to sql which will also be installed on the box. Can anyone suggest what sort of spec machine would be good to run 2003 especially with around 20 rdp users Cheers

Hey all, We are running Windows 2003 domain, Windows XP and some Vista clients and We are expirencing an authentication problem with clients who uses the SecureRemote client (NGX) from the Internet. The remote computers sometimes are domain members and some are in workgroup. When we change the password to a AD username and the remote user tries to use CIFS, SMTP or any other network service which requires Kerberos or NTLM authentication - it failes. The user recieves errors messages in the eventlog "No authentication protocol was available" and some other related authentication events. This is sometimes caused by invalid cached credentials. Because the…
