Change Proxy Settings for LocalSystem account
by Guest PhilScott- 5 replies

Hi there, I am wondering if someone can help me with this issue. We have recently changed a our proxy server and this particular program installed on Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 server will not connect to the internet to check for updates automatically anymore. Instead it sends me an alert email to tell me that the automatic update failed. I have spoken to the manufacturers of the software and they inform me that it will use the Proxy settings for the local system account and that I need to change this. So i go into the registry looking for HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings and sure enough, the ol…

Handle count
by Guest Brion- 0 replies
We have 2 Windows 2003 fileservers. They are clustered, and this problem seems to impact them both. The handle count is enormous - it grows in a stepping sort of fashion until it reaches about 25,000 or so, then the server starts complaining about not being able to allocate from the shared pool, and then within a day or so after that it dies (if we don't reboot it first). Digging in a bit further, it looks like the System process is the one that is consuming all those handles and not closing them. Again, over time, the graph looks like a stair case. I ran Handle.exe, and many of the files do look like legitimate files that users actually have open. B…

USB Controllers and Devices - Unknown Device ??
by Guest E-Double- 7 replies
The USB ports on one Windows 2003 Server are not working, and in Device Manager under USB Controllers and Devices it says ''Unknown Device (along with entries for Root Hub and something else). On an identical server (hardware and software should all be the same) where the USB ports are working the entry reads 'USB Composite Device Driver' instead of 'Unknown Device.'' Where or how exactly can we either get this specific driver or fix this USB issue? We tried to delete the device and have Windows reinstall it, as well as tried to copy the entire drivers/inf folder from the server that is working to reinstall the driver on the server with no USB functiona…

Unique folder sharing issue-Win2008
by Guest Anthony Mollusky- 0 replies
On my current Win2003 web server, it is on an isolated segment of the network. We use NAT to connect to the file share on that server. I am attempting to replace that server with a Win2008 server. I can not get the folder share to work on that server. I have configured the security, firewall, etc. the same as the Win2003 server but can not get it to work. I am wondering if something new has been added to Win2008 like maybe it is using new TCP or UDP port then before. Any ideas?

Migrate shares from W2K to W2K3 server
by Guest JT- 3 replies
I am doing a large file server upgrade. I will be migrating hundreds of shares from a Windows 2000 server to a Windows 2003 server (SP2). Is it possible to merge or import the Windows 2000 Lanmanager Shares registry key in to the Windows 2003 registry? This is the registry location for shares and their security. If not, what is the best way to create or migrate shares w/ security intact. I can migrate the data w/ NTFS permissions just fine. I would like to know the most efficient and safest way to migrate or create new shares. Thank you in advance - JT

Having challenges with Quota system because our "common folder" and user drive are on the same volume. Symantec Mail Security, Exchange Data files and our Accounting System is also installed on this volume. Plan: Backup that Volume Purchase Partition Magic (or some other form of partitioning software) Partition the drive into two seperate volume. Has anoyone done this before - I've had no problems on XP Workstations - but have never attempted on a SBS Server with RAID 5. One more note - Windows OS on Seperate Mirrored drives.

How to set up a Message of the Day - techniques & advice please
by Guest Hackwood- 0 replies

Windows server 2003 XP Pro Clients with 1 or 2 Windows 2K pro clients Hi there, I need to set up a message of the day & I don't want to spend any money! I know that I could use Domain Security policy and create a crude Title & Message there but this has to be something that an end user would be able to change so it cuts that one out. I have currently created a folder on a global share & that contains a Word document which can be saved as an html file. I've also created a shortcut to go into All Users/Start Menu/Program Files/StartUp to run the html file. Basically it works OK & apart from making the IE shortcut do a few things (no navigatio…

Are admin permissions really needed?
by Guest sdunnack- 5 replies

I have a vendor that is trying to tell me that they need Admin permissions on the Windows 2003 server to perform the following actions. They also thought they needed it for file creation and registry editing, which they don't, but I'm unfamiliar with the following and can't find much online. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks! 1. Global System Objects (mutex, events) creation/read/write, used by Inter Process Communication: - Conversion engine - Database remote storage - Database lock/synchronization management - DW licensing management - Full Text Search (indexing service) management 2. Problems with group policy update
by Guest yaro137@googlemail.com- 0 replies
- 250 views
When I went through the logs of one of XP workstations I noticed that it gets a lot of errors about not being able to access some group policy located in SYSVOL folder on the server. When running gpupdate the operation seems to be successful but when looking into event logs of that PC there are same errors again. What I found is that it tries to access a policy that doesn't exist on the server within the Policies folder inside SYSVOL. What is the way to fix it? Thanks yaro

Some questions around moving shared folders to DFS...
by Guest SammyBar- 2 replies

Hi, I'm testing DFS to know if it can handle my current shared folders. First I see I can not create a tree-like DFS directory. I want to organize the current sharings in the DFS in such a way they UNC appears grouped by servers where they originally resided. For example I created the DFS root \\company.net\Files. Now I want to create such a DFS UNCs: \\company.net\Files\Server1\SharedFolder1 which points to \\server1\SharedFolder1 \\company.net\Files\Server1\SharedFolder2 which points to \\server1\SharedFolder2 \\company.net\Files\Server2\SharedFolder1 which points to \\server2\SharedFolder1 But within DFS console I can not create such "3 steps …

Hi Running Windows 2003 Standard Server as a Domain Controller, File Server and Print Server. I'm frequently having the spooler service crash and cannot figure out why or how to correct it. Oh, running service pack 1. In the event log I get the following error message: Source: Application Error Category: (100) Event ID: 1000 Description: Faulting application spoolsv.exe, version 5.2.3790.1830, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.2.3790.1830, fault address 0x0003248b. Hi all, I have the following problem: I have the following share on a Windows 2003 R2 server : \\netserver2003\d Now I need to shutdown the netserver2003 server. It will be susbstituted by a new server with a new name. But I need to preserve the above mentioned share because it is used by many computers. Can Dfs do that? For a short time both server will coexists. Can I move the share to dfs transparently without clients notice the move? If this can not be done, what else do you suggest? Any hint is welcomed Thanks in advance Sammy

Intermittent SSL connection problems with IIS6 on Windows 2003 R2 SP2
by Guest Andrew Dancy- 2 replies

I'm tearing my hair out over a really annoying problem with a website hosted with IIS6 and would appreciate any help people can give. We've just had to migrate a website from an old Windows 2000 machine to a new Windows 2003 machine, and at the same time move it into a new hosting facility. Now we're experiencing problems with some users unable to use SSL to connect via https to our website. I'm not completely sure whether it's a problem with IIS, Windows, the firewall (a Cisco PIX) or the hosting facility, but I thought I'd start with the former and try to eliminate those as potential causes first. The website is at http://www.lovetts.co.uk and also at https…
