Tips on reducing profile sizes automatically...
by Guest Jake- 1 reply

Hi, Some of my users are plagued with huge profile sizes which takes a lot of time for logging on/off. Does it exist an elegant way to find out which folders are actually pulled and pushed at logon / logoff? From this collection of folders I could list the biggest files from 'temp' and 'download' folders and give the users the opportunity to manually delete unnecessary files. Thanks for tips on this rgds jake

permissions to reboot (both locally and remotely)
by Guest Blake- 6 replies

I have created a domain user and I want to grant it the rights to reboot a server (this is NOT an admin, either local or domain). I am looking for the minimum requirements for both a remote shutdown/reboot as well as a local shutdown/reboot (such as a scheduled task). I am using SHUTDOWN.EXE currently. I have given the domain user both 'Force shutdown from a remote system' as well as 'shut down the system' - but I get errors, most notably: C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools>shutdown -r -m \\test_server The operation completed successfully. A required privilege is not held by the client. During the local attempt, the scheduled task runs …

cannot switch Control Panel to Classic view
by Guest Dave- 0 replies

Hi, For some reason in a Citrix Session on a Windows 2003 server I cannot switch Control Panel to Classic View. Clicking on the 'Switch to Classic View' link does not do anything. I have trawled through Group Policy to see if this is somehow turned off somewhere but cannot find anything. I need to get to the Mail icon as I have a user with an Outlook problem and I suspect his mail profile. Any ideas of either how to get to the mail icon or how to switch to classic view? thanks Dave

by Guest jeremiah wright- 1 reply

If your PC is taking too much time to start up and throwing unexpected error messages and automatically restarting, it is most likely that your PC registry is having errors. To fix the registry errors and get rid of all these problems, you can either format the hard disk and reinstall the operating system or simply get a free registry cleaner download to scan and repair the registry errors. The choice is yours. Registry is a file that is created and maintained by the Windows operating system software to store vital information about the hardware and software configuration and PC settings. These data are crucial for your PC as they are accessed by the system to ru…

NTBACKUP log missing
by Guest seanmig- 12 replies

We are using NTBackup (in a batch command) as a PRE command (runs the batch file first before running actual Backup Exec job) on Backup Exec 10. If you run the batch file manually by double clicking or as a scheduled task you can see "backup.log" being created in "%Userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data\" folder. However there is no log file generated whenever the batch file was invoked (as pre-command) by running a Backup Exec job. Has anyone encountered something like this? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and regards, Charles

Workaround for a possible bug
by Guest Wowbagger- 0 replies

Not sure if this is a bug or not, but it was definitely an irritation. Workaround included. My server (2003) runs a script several times a day that pulls files off of a remote FTP site. It downloads the files into a temporary directory, then sorts them accordingly. It turns out that the permissions from the -remote ftp server- were being retained during the download, which was preventing people from being able to use the files locally. This behavior goes against every scrap of documentation that I have been able to locate, but the permissions set by the -remote ftp server- were being retained. I even followed the directions in http://support.microso…

Print service slow for clients
by Guest Brian_Christie- 3 replies

Hi. I have a new Win2K3 R2 server as a DC & a print server: Dell PE1950 Quad 2.66, 4GB ram, RAID1 15Krpm drives. (my old Win2K prinserver is failing). When I try to connect to a shared printer from most clients, it takes a real long time to add the printer and sometimes the add fails. If it takes a long time and succeeds, the print driver doesn't get installed. What did I do wrong when I shared the printers? I did it like I did on the old Win2K server. (add printer, created a std IP port, etc.) What's sad is that my old Win2K server is fast at adding printers from the client PCs. This new one should be just as good. Thanks for whatever help you…
