Windows Media Services, reduction of rights
by Guest David- 2 replies

I have several people that need to manage a Windows Media Services 9 server. Without giving them administrator permissions, I cannot get them to connect. I have followed http://support.microsoft.com/kb/842072 and this does not work. Ultimately I would like to deploy the admin tool and have people connect without being local admins.

C:\Windows\Security\edb.log and tmp.edb
by Guest Danno- 2 replies

Hello, Backups are skipping the following files on a Windows Server 2003 SP1 box: C:\Windows\Security\edb.log C:\Windows\Security\tmp.edb This server happens to be hosting Exchange (it's the Front End box) but I don't believe this is related to Exchange. I see this directory and database/transaction logs for all of our Windows Server 2003 machines. I'm not having any luck finding articles that explain why these files are being skipped but from the error we get it's stated the files are unable to be opened. Any thoughts? Thanks,

VPN under NAT with a single eth interface: how?
by Guest Sid- 3 replies
Hi, I have a w2k3 enterprise server, which is under a NAT. As my router does not have an integrated VPN server, I would like to set up my w2k3 to accept incoming VPN connections in order to have access to all my internal network from the Internet. The server has just one ehternet card using the DHCP of the router, so it has an IP like 192.168.1.2. I would use Internet IP to connect to the VPN from the Internet, and the Port forwarding would redirect my traffic to the server. I've set up the VPN using with the wizard of the Routing feature choosing the custom option, and then VPN. I can connect to my server using VPN, but the IP assigned belong to a diff…

Hi - I use Exmerge to archive users off the system. I have a number of Mac users as well that connects to Exchange. Entourage has no good archive system, so their mail boxes grow and grow. Is there a way to use Exmerge to archive off, say email that is older than 6 months old, then have it deleted from their box?

Question forcing clients to access new server shares
by Guest AllenK- 2 replies
Hello all, I am going to be adding a new Win2k3 server to a domain. No problem there. My question is if I give this new server a new name, how do I force the clients to access the network shares on this server. The server is basically just a file server and the users login with a batch file in theNetlogon share that creates their drive mappings. When I did this before, I had a hard time getting the clients to access the new server shares. I had to manually remove the existing mapped drives from the PC's then re-run the logon.bat file in the Netlogon share. I know I can add the /d switch to remove the previous drive mappings. Maybe I need to also…

Gurus, In troubleshooting for MS support recently on a case I opened with them, I was told to disable tcp chimney (since I was running Windows Server 2003 SP2) prior to capturing a netmon trace. I am not sure why I had to disable tcp chimney prior to capturing a netmon trace let alone what tcp chimney even is. Any ideas? -- Spin

Processes not allocating properly memory
by Guest gointern@gmail.com- 0 replies

Hello, a few days ago my server became unstable, SMTP and Exchange services restarted and other applications do not respond well. I've been looking into many things but none of them fix the problem so far. One thing I noticed is that the processes do not use enough memory. All processes use memory under 50mb but in Task Manager Performance tab MEM Usage is over 1 GB. Any ideas where all that memory is going?

Print Migrator and old printer share name
by Guest Steve- 0 replies
We used the Microsoft Print Migrator to migrate the printer devices from Windows 2000 to 2003. However, we want to use the old server name \\printserver1. We changed DNS to the same IP as \\printserver2..but when we try to go to the UNC path of \\printserver1 to see the print shares..we get "\\printserver1 is not accessible. you might not have permission to use this network resource. logon failure: the target account name is incorrect". When I look at my printer setup (XP SP2)..I see 'access is denied'. What have others done in this case to transfer the printer devices to a new server, but keep the old print server name. We may be better off just renaming …

cannot run scripts on domain controler
by Guest RichGK- 4 replies
I have a logon script located on a domain controler created to map a drive to a shared resource on the same server (this is a test server for learning purposes so the domain controler is also a file and print server). However it fails to run. When attempting to run the script manually via the client PC I get the error message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item" However, I can open the folder that the script is contained in and create and delete items so security of that resource isn't a problem. I have also replaced permissions on the script directly with the same result. …

Hello, I have several print server (with hundreds of printers) that I am trying to manage using the "Print Manager" application from the R2 CD (Printmanagement.msc) installed from the R2 CD \admin\Print... I am a Domain Admin, and have full rights to the server and the printers. When I run the console on the print server, I can see and manage all of the printers. WHen I install the utility on my XP workstation, I can see the ports, forms and drivers, but there are NO printers. I have seen this question posted before, but no real answers. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
