NTFS permissions and redirected folders (W2K server SP4)

Hi, I want to redirect "the desktop" folder of my users to a share on my server "\\server01\desktopdir". I follow the procedure described here : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/288991(Windows 2000 To set security on the shared folders in Windows 2000) When a user login a "\\server01\desktopdir\username" folder is created. When I check the permission on the folder "username", administrators and system get full control but there is "creator owner" with full control on "subfolder and files only" and "username" with full control for this "folder only". I think I should get administrators, system, username with full control control only. Do I miss someth…

Logical Disk Manager - big issue under load
by Guest Florian Heigl- 1 reply

Hi, while doing a test robocopy job from our old to the new fileserver i noticed that diskpart started being extremely unreliable. Normally there should be 14 or 15 Volumes to be listed; about 10 of these are mounted into various directories that are in the robocopy target area. When trying to list volumes diskpart will at times report none, at times one or two of them and error out. Similar behaviour shows in Disk Manager, it shows all volumes but some lack the NTFS-label. Also not all volumes are selectable in the snapshot property tab (which makes things really bad) I have to admit it's been a long time since I used the mount-into-a- directory opt…

I am running Server 2000 sp4 in a small Doctor's surgery center. They complained of very slow response on the server. I came inon Sunday with no one accessing the system. The task manager shows the memory usage at about 1% and the CPU is flat lined at 100%. The two processes using the CPU are eventmgr.exe (75%-95%) and CSRSS.exe (5%-25%). How can I tell what the eventmgr.exe is doing? Norm -- nwc

Allow helpdesk to add local printers
by Guest Richard- 0 replies

I would like our helpdesk staff to be able to add local printers to our Windows 2003 print server(s). Is this possible without adding them to the power users or administrators group? Adding them to the print operators group and allowing them to load/unload device and print drivers via gpo doesn't seem to do the trick. Thanks.

Printer/roaming profile/problem
by Guest TVITBRIAN- 4 replies

Okay here's a run down of the situation. Got a Server 2003 domain. Got 3 servers, 2 are domain controllers. One of the domain controllers runs Server 2003 Standard SP2 the other R2. The one running Standard lets call "labserver" the one running r2 lets call "server2003". labserver shares out all the printers. Server2003 pushes the printers to the machines via group policy and print management(feature of R2). This is a school. There are several labs. All the students use a mandatory profile. All the lab machines are cloned exactly alike. Here's my problem. Sometimes when the students try to print it says that the printers aren't installed correctly. Basical…

windows 2003 dsn and Ad setup
by Guest gs- 1 reply

I think the existing configuration of the DNS and AD on the primary file server and teh exchanges is less than optimal. I thought both windows 2003 server are configured with dns, whichever first is boot up that would be the primary and the other will be secondary. they configured the primary server to look for the other DNS and AD. If the exchange server is not , certificate service will not run, AD will have error messages....PC workstations may have difficulty with drive maps and DNS access. I thought the whole idea of have AD replication and 2nd DNS is to make the entire system more reliable and dependent but I am seeing more problem then t…

Hi, I hope i put this in the correct forum, but i am setting up my computer, not on a LAN, to use port 5632 for the remote desktop host. I've opened the appropriate port on the router but i get "because of a protocol error" code 0x1104, the connection was disconnected when i try to connect to it from another computer not on the same connection. Servers attempting to connect to APIPA address over internet
by Guest Shawn McCabe- 1 reply
Seeing some strange activity from 3 of our exchange servers and one DC (A global catalog server) all Windows Server 2003. Firewall logs are showing multiple blocked attempted connections to the internet by servers to mainly APIPA addresses - over multiple different ports. i.e. Source: DC Service: TCP 1270 (ports always varies) Destination: 169.254.241.60 (address always varies but is usually APIPA). When running port reporter, netstat, or TCPView on offending servers - traffic can not be seen... Initially considered spoofing but firewall was able to determine correct MAC address of NIC. Anyone ever seen this or anything like it?

So instead of typing "cd Program Files" , i think he typed cd P and pressed some keys to get the rest of the name Would like to know some of these shortcuts Thanks

I'm stuck here. I have a crappy little app that is going to run on our server. It doesn't do UNC but I can have that changed in a future release. It only is aware of regular old Windows drive letters. It will work connecting to network data if the drive has been mapped. But... ....if I log off of the server I lose my mapping. I've searched and the only answers I've found are summed up in "The concept of having mapped drives available when no one is logged in really doesn't make much sense in the context of NT operating systems" or "Network drives wont be available when no one is logged on. Try using UNC paths instead." I need to be able to log …

This is a basic question.. but we had a server crash with DNS on it.. it was the first server i setup DNS services on.. There is still a secondary DNS server (i think it has a copy of the zone info etc).. I'm not sure on the this new server how I should set the DNS portion up.. ie: this secondary server will go away soon.. So do i just go through the wizard as if there isnt already a DNS setup on this secondary server? I need to make sure that if i make this a read only secondary.. that i can then make it writable.. as the other dns will go away.. actually.. that other dns server was setup as a read only secondary.. so i'm not sure which is the right th…

on two windows 2003 standard servers install on dual xeon Intel boxes have problem with ATI Radeon x550 video PCI express card driver. When the remote desktop is used to reboot/shutdown the server, esp. after an update on the server, there will likely a crash resulting in the error reporting pointing to device driver as culprit. However there is no supported windows 2003 Radon driver. how can I uninstall the Radeon driver and use Microsoft 's regular or any other compatible video driver? or any other PCI express video card with supported driver that will give me 1280 x 1024? and what kind of resolution can I expect then on the console …

XP Pro Activation Issues
by Guest a.robertson- 1 reply

It seems to be that this is the current 'hot topic' and it unfortunate that i am adding to it. After having bought a new laptop, it annoys to me that i have had to send it back to the factory thinking that there may have been some hardware/software reason that caused the problem - the problem being of XP Pro asking to be activated, after i had already done so. I have now tried the telephone service 3 times now only to find that i am still 'locked out' - i cant do anything about it either as when i did manage to speak to a rep over the phone regarding this issue, after i had asked the question, was promptly hung up on. This is not what i would call …
