Default Gateway setting changes after reboot
by Guest brent- 2 replies

Hello, I have a W2003 R2 server configured as DC, DNS & DHCP at a branch office. It is currently setup in a test lab and everything seems to be working fine. I have a VPN connection between the main office and the branch office. My problem is that when I reboot this server the gateway changes to the main office's gateway (192.168.1.1 versus 192.168.0.1). The IP is configured manually and I confirmed that the router is not configured as a DHCP server. I'm not sure what is causing the change (or why a change would happen since it is manually configured). Additional info: Main office- SBS 2003 R2 server IP=192.168.1.20 default gw= 192.168.1…

Hi guys This time I got a certified for windows server 2003 nic card. I plop in sp2 to my server and it will not talk to the world anymore. There is no connectoid in network. it disappeared. The driver for the card shows up as functioning in device manager. (the card worked perfectly before SP2 was loaded). The Network connections service hung starting. The Com+ event system hung starting. There are no endpoints. thus any service which requires them does not start. anything I attempt to start that depends on having endpoints or which depends on another service which needs them does not start. all services would have started normally if whatever made the…

I have a teacher folder student files folder student folders The objective was to give the teacher access to their student folders to review and modify documents. The students can only see folders that they create in the student files folder. This setup works great until the teacher opens a file created by the student. At that point the students ACL disappears from the file and they can no longer see their files. In my ACL's for student files: Teacher can read write not inherited Creator has full permission not inherited Student has read only this folder not inherited Yet when students create their folder the r…

Group Policy not getting pushed to some clients
by Guest Joel- 0 replies

Hi, I've actually got another post over in the Updates section but wasn't getting any hits so I thought I'd try here. So sorry abou the cross post, but I'm really hoping someone can help. We're running WSUS on win2k Server with Win2k Pro clients. Some of the clients are no longer getting the updates from the WSUS server. I've noticed that the culprit appears to be group policy as it is not getting pushed to these misbehaving clients.. I'm not sure how to fix this. The default domain group policy has the correct location configured: http://ServerName but the when I look in the registry on the client it is missing the "http:" and only has //ServerNam…

The scheduled job was created by someone else and I would like to view the list of files being backed up. Does anyone know how to modify this on an existing job? Thanks

suptools.msi install failure
by Guest SnowCritter- 0 replies

I'm attempting to install the Support Tools for Windows Server 2003 R2 from the CD. The installer launches OK but, in the end, I receive a "failure" message. I am attempting this while logged-in as the Administrator. The failure is noted in the event log (11780), but following the link only yields a message that says, in essense, "Sorry, but we haven't any information about that". Can anyone provide some insight? Thanks in advance.

Script Needed to Change Ownership on User Home Directories
by Guest Scott- 7 replies
To prepare for implementing disk quotas on an R2 file server with 300 user home directories--most of which are currently owned by domain administrators, I am seeking a script which will change ownership on each of the user home directories (named as username) and all contents within each home directory back to each individual user . This is because of my understanding that disk quotas are based upon file ownership. I understand that subinacl is the tool to use, but I am not certain about the syntax. Ideally the script would iteratively read each directory, determine the username from the directory name and then apply the ownership without otherwise changin…

Modify Default Ownership on New User Home Directory Folders
by Guest Scott- 0 replies
I've noted that the default ownership on new user home directories on our Server 2003 file servers is domain administrators. On W2k server the default ownership is the local server administrators group. However, I want to modify the default behavior so that when new users are created, the default ownership is with the new user. The reason for this is that we want to establish disk quotas and disk quotas, I understand, are based upon file/folder ownership. If the users don't own the content of their home directories, they won't get charged against their disk quota, or so I've read. How can I modify the default ownership and are there any factors I am miss…

Hi, I am trying to install a printer on a x64 Windows 2003 server to be shared with XP clients. Problem is there is only a 32 bit driver for it. I managed to add the 32 bit driver to the 64 bit server by using print management on a 32 bit server as an intermediate but I can't figure out (if it's even possible) how to add the printer to the 64 bit print server. Can it be done if there's no 64 bit driver? TIA --

Adding a security group to permissions
by Guest Gis Bun- 2 replies

Hi. I remember it's possible in a command line utility to add a security group (not replace) the permissions for a folder and various sub-folders where those sub-folders have unique permissions. Example: I want to add the security group "MIS" with read & execute permissions on a folder called Home where inside home you have a folder for George where George has permissions (but no one else except domain admins and the usuals), for Janice where Janice has permissions (but no one else except domain admins and the usuals), .... I want to *add* MIS to each folder. Assume the domain called BUYME. Thanks Gis

Hello, I am trying to run a VBScript against a Windows Server 2003 R2 Service Pack 2 as a normal 'Domain User' and I get the following error: The remote server machine does not exist or is unavailable: 'GetObject' The Script works against a Windows 2000 Server (SP4) fine, it just errors out when I run it against a Windows 2003 server. Some other info: - The server is not offline - Windows 2003 Server Firewall is DISABLED - The Client OS I'm using to run the VBScript is Windows 2000 Professional /w SP4 and WSH v5.6 - If I add the Authenticated Users group to the Local Administrators group on the Windows 2003 Server then my VBScript will run against th…

Hi, I have installed a print server for the first time. I'm running Windows 2003 R2 and have 5 printers installed. All the settings on the server are correct e.g. paper size, double sided etc. When I get a user to install, the printer installs fine, but none of the settings are adjusted on the users PC. Should the user get the server settings? If so how?

Master Browser Issues
by Guest TJCooper1972- 2 replies

I have two 2003 DCs on a subnet. When I do a "browstat status" on DC00, it reports DC00 (itself) is the Master Browser and reports 3 servers as backups, and DC00 is in that list. When I do a "browstat status" on DC01, it reports DC00 is the master, and 3 servers are backups (with DC00 on it as well), and 2 server different than what it reported on DC00. It also reports "Unable to retrieve server list from DC00: 64" So, I think I need to reg hack DC00 and set it to Auto, set DC01 to true (the one I want to be the master), and choose other backups and set them to Auto (If I want), and all other servers to FALSE. Then force an election, making DC01 th…

Web site acces restriction using group policies

Hi, I try to find a way to prevent a user to access certain web but allow him to access to some specific web site. - Windows firewall rules and ipsec commands are not an option here because they will apply to the computer so all users will be affected by those rules - Have tried some option of Internet Explorer (Content, trusted site) with no luck. Of course, a proxy will be the trick but just consider for now that I can create one, I just want to know if there is a way to manager web site filter in Windows using Group Policies or other tricks for a specific user. I will also put this post in Windows Server Networking and Windows Server General. T…

We are getting somewhat low on disk space on our C: partition and need to free up some room. During a search, we found that our C:\WINNT\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder is almost 200mb and wanted to know if the contents in this folder can be safely deleted or moved. We are using Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition SP2. Thank you, David A.

Hello, I currently have 10 printer drivers installed with various paper settings (for instance one driver has tray1 as the default tray and driver #2 has tray4 as the default tray). I am migrating everyone from using the generic logon ID (PRINTER) to their own network ID. When the user signs onto the server they have to setup up all 10 drivers settings. Which files/registry settings do I need to copy in order to migrate all printer settings to every user? Thank you, D

Windows domain - backup on logoff?
by Guest Sue- 2 replies

Does any one know of any software/method that will automatically backup on logoff? We need to backup mydocuments and any other files including database and emails that users have saved on the local harddrive (C;) and shared network drives. Is this possible to configure in the windows Active Directory? Can the files be set up to backup on logoff by synchronizing roaming profiles? Any disadvantages to this? Sorry for all questions - thanks for any help - I am wondering how I should set up a good backup strategy, I have software suggestions for Legato and Retrospect.

Stored User Names and Passwords NOT WORKING
by Guest The_Nite_Owl- 0 replies

We have some Win 2003 SP2 servers that are application appliances. We log into these boxes with a local logon account and map drives to shared resources on our domain using alternate credentials (a domain account). These mappings never reconnect themselves after a reboot of the server unless you open up Windows Explorer, click the drive which will pop up a window stating that the password was incorrect, then enter the password. We have 4 mappings that point to sub-folders on the same resource. Example: J: folder1 on 'ourserver\ourfolder' K: folder2 on 'ourserver\ourfolder' L: folder3 on 'ourserver\ourfolder' In Stored User Names and Passwords we have a…
