Multiple Branch Office HookUps
by Guest JJ- 5 replies
Hi All, I have an app that needs to be used in multiple branch offices by 25 users on average. The application is built using c# with a thin client front end and Sql server 2005 for back end. What would be the best way to get the data back to HQ? I could pop servers at each location and replicate the data down to HQ every night but would prefer to have a solution that pushed the data on a 10 min cycle back to HQ. Any thoughts on the way to go with this? From a network and application stand point how would you set something like this up? Thanks, Jam

Apple Macs connecting to SMB file shares
by Guest CL- 4 replies

I have several apple macs (10.4 & 10.5) connecting to files shares on our 2003 R2 server (which is a domain controller). They can connect fine using AFP (but files get truncated) and if I try to connect them via SMB you get several different errors relating to permission access or can not mount the volume but connecting via AFP is fine our via a PC. Now.......yesterday I setup a test share on the 2003 R2 domain member server, SMB connections worked perfectly. The share and folder permission were exactly the same as the original file server? I have tried also creating a new GPO and binded the macs to the domain and set the GPO to KB555652 which chan…

Does anyone know why the 'Allow Basic authentication (password is sent in cleartext)' checkbox on the Proxy Server Tab of the Update Source and Proxy Server settings in Options does not remain checked. This is only happening on my newer Server 2k3 R2 Enterprise X64 edition SP2 Server. I have two WSUS servers one for two seperate AD Forests and the other Server is Running Server 2k3 R2 SP2 Standard 32 bit. My syncs fail on the new one until I recheck that box and immediately do another sync.

restrict access to file share by computer
by Guest lansvcs- 2 replies

We are using W2K3 Standard R2 SP2 as a file server. We grant access to the share using share permissions and NTFS permissions and all works as it should. We would also like to restrict which computers a user can access the share from. User A has access to the share from Compter A but User A is denied access to the share from Computer B. So far we have been unable to do this. Any ideas would be appreciated.

why have a server?...advice needed
by Guest Greg Peterson- 12 replies

Greetings. I will be starting a small (20-30 person) business soon, and will likely be a key decision maker for the IT equipment. In the future company, I am wondering why we need to have a server, when a relatively cheap NAS will likely do the trick for all of our filesharing needs (mostly sharing engineering drawings and other large files). For e-mail, we'll probably go with Gmail and eliminate the need for any mail server (if people want to set up POP3 accounts on their PCs, that's their choice). Our website will receive minimal traffic, so it will be hosted elsewhere. If we use something like Peachtree accounting (which is for 5 or so users), …

Server responds to ping, but event log says "it is shutdown" and server realy hung up Hello, Our server is HP DL380 run Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition and Sql Server 2000 Standard Edition. Its role is the being the database server, no apps., no IIS. Our server was working fine until last sunday. Last sunday, I applied the windows updates and added extra memory and added some disks, created a new array (Raid-5). Since then the server is hung up several times. I changed one of the disks since HP software tool suggested so. It hung up a few days later. I took out the extra memory. It hung up this morning again. Th new array is barely used (just storing for fe…

I wish to control bia logon script the field "description" on my workstations, but I not found an environment variable or something to read that from the dos prompt. How can I do that? Actually I'm creating a new variable with my value needed, with this way I can inform "if" and "if not" commands to customise my logon script. Is is possible to do that using "description" field? Disabled Domain Controller
by Guest athos_01- 9 replies

I have a DC that I thought was dead for good, so I removed it through asdiedit. Later I find out that because of other network issues that I have, I needed to have that server back up, so was able to resurect it. It re-registered itself in DNS and is serving login requests. But, it shows in Active Directory as disabled as well as there are no NTDS settings. Can this be fixed? If I log into that particular DC, it's Sites and Settings have the the NTDS settings, as it has never received replication from the other servers that it is gone. So, two questions, can I enable the DC machine account somehow? and Is there somehow of repairing the NTDS settings? Than…

by Guest Calab- 1 reply

I've noticed that there is no "Shared Documents" folder on a Windows 2003 Server machine. Is this normal? Is this something I can enable? I don't need to share the files outside of the computer, but do like to have a common documents folder that is shared between the users on this PC. Thanks!
