bcdedit - boot.ini
by Guest me- 1 reply
All, I'm exploring window 2008 and am getting to grips with bcdedit, one thing I have noticed is that on the old boot.ini an entrey points to the hardware not the windows drive letter i.e. multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS Under bcdedit a boot menu option only lists a osdevice or device as C: How can I find out what physical device in my system C: is refering too ? I ask this as in a DR we recover servers to new hardware and the Os drive (C:) can be on partition 1 / 2 /3 and we could easily edit the boot.ini to reflect this. Can anyone help Cheers Paul

Hi, I want to point our PDC in the top level domain to external time servers. I am aware of the recomended setup of time synchronization (domain hierarchy, NT5DS etc. etc.) Can anybody tell me how w32time on the top level domain PDC emulator (Windows Server 2003) handles a situation with multiple time sources? Does it follow the appropriate RFC's? TIA, Peter

Hi, Got a laptop user who gets "Offline files [\\server-01\users on server-01] Access to 'Filename' is denied on \\server-01\filepath" errors when syncing files that he's modified or looked at whilst off-line. Not a problem if he modifies them on-line and other laptop users do not suffer from this error. I've checked NTFS, Share and Ownership settings as per the MS White Paper "User Data and Settings Management" and all seem fine. Any ideas???? Cheers John

Cross-forest administration
by Guest PedroAsani- 0 replies

I'm having trouble finding the information I need, I suspect mainly because what I am trying to do violates a basic security principle, but the business case for doing so is valid. I am working for a company that buys and sells companies. They have their own sysadmin team that do all the admin for all the companies [ForestA]. They want to be able to sell off the companies with as little hassle as possible, so each one has their own Forest, the idea being that all we would need to do is give the new owners the passwords, unhook the Trusts, and we would be done. [ForestB, ForestC etc] The Trusts are in place, but we want to be able to make an account in…

Windows Time Service on a Domain
by Guest Jeremy - SDX- 2 replies

I have a windows 2003 server and 30 xp computers connected to a domain. Right now my time is set up for each xp computer to get the time from the server (at least I think) and the server keeps the time. I am almost certain that none of the computers or the server look to time.windows.com for a time. The users on the computer cannot change their time since it automatically resets back to the server time. If I change the time manually on the server it eventually becomes innacurate again by a minute or two. From reading the microsoft articles I understand the computers must look to the server for time but microsoft advises against having the server look…

Syncing ODBC System DSN's between servers
by Guest Dave Navarro- 1 reply
How can I synch the ODBC System DSN's between multiple servers? Our primary software requires a System DSN for each new database we create. So at the moment, every time we add a new database I have to manually log on to each of 5 servers and add the new System DSN. Is there some way to do it on one master server and then synch it to the rest? Thanks! --Dave

We currently have a two node, Windows 2003 R2 Enterprise cluster (32 bit) using shared SAN resources. Over the last several months we have occasionally been getting a situation where the active node slows down and becomes almost non-responsive. It doesn't quite stop, so the cluster failover doesn't automatically happen. We've set the registry key (I don't remember the KB article) that is supposed to cause the failover to happen when the higher level Windows functions stop, but we've one case since then where the failover didn't happen automatically. The event log entries seem to indicate a loss of system resources, so I'm suspecting a memory leak in…

Hi, When i go to http://server/certsrv on a vista machine i get error message The certificate enrollment page you are attempting to access cannot be used with this version of Windows. To enable Web certificate enrollment for clients running Windows Vista, your administrator must update all Windows CA Web enrollment pages. To learn more about this issue and the steps needed to update Web enrollment pages to support all versions of Windows, see: 922706 when i go to that page it talks about adding files from a server 2008 disk which i dont have. is their a quicker & easier solution like a hotfix or something. thank you

Hi, Since 09:06 this morning I have been unable to log into our 2003 server locally or via RDP but can ping and access files on it. This server is a standalone IIS box in a DMZ, so not in any domain. I rebooted and 1000s of the error below appeared which is worrying as plenty of people seem to have encountered this but no reports of a fix.. Event Type: Error Event Source: Srv Event Category: None Event ID: 2000 Date: 28/11/2007 Time: 09:06:02 User: N/A Computer: GHLIIS Description: The server's call to a system service failed unexpectedly. Big CI files filling up C drive
by Guest Mikel- 0 replies
We are getting low disk space messages on a Windows 2003 server. The OS partition is drive C and has only two directories taking much space -- windows and the "System Volume Information" folder. I drilled down inside the catalog.wci folder and found two files that are 2 GB each. I disabled the Indexing Service. Is it safe to delete the 00010001.ci file? -- Mikel Cook MCSE 2003

Multiple access problems after login to domain
by Guest CUBuffs- 2 replies

I have a user who after logging in to our Server 2003 domain from her XP Pro pc has multiple access issues. She is unable to access her public files and receives a prompt to login for access to the server. When inputing her username and password she then receives the following error message: "Logon unsuccessful: The username you typed is the same as the username you logged in with. That username has already been tried. A domain controller cannot be found to verify that username." Additionally, she has no access to printers and when launching Outlook 2003 for access to the Exchange server 2003 she is prompted for her username and password but cannot…

Each time we add a new database to SQL and create an ODBC system connection, we have to re-create that connection on all of our servers so that scripts running on those servers can access the database. Is it possible to auto-migrate ODBC connections from one box to another and keep everything synched? --Dave

Using VBScript for logon scripts rather than BAT files
by Guest Laphan- 3 replies
Hi All It seems to be that using VBscript files are better (more reliable??) than BAT files when it comes to adding/removing/setting default printers - is this the case? Due to the blessed HP2600N printer I've had to install this printer manually on each PC rather than pushing it via GPO logon scripts, but when the other printers get pushed through to each user account via GPO they take the default printer status away from my locally installed HP2600N printers - there anyway I can correct this in a BAT file or do I have to go the VB script route? It's just that I don't know how to do certain things like move files about and map drives in VBScript …

by Guest TID1001- 2 replies

I inherited a SBS that has had multiple modems and software installed. There are conflicts trying to configure fax services. The modems were improperly removed but the software was not uninstalled. At this point I do not have the modems and I can not uninstall the software from add remove programs. I also contacted the various modem manufacturers for removal software but none is available. Has anyone dealt with this type of situation? -- Regards TID1001

Re-Entering Account Password for Services
by Guest Ron- 0 replies
Everytime I restart one of my Windows 2003 servers (SP2) I have to re-enter the Log on As password for several services (these services pertain mostly to RightFax). We are using an account created in Active Directory for these services. This happens to about 10 services, why do I have to keep re-entering the password in order to get these services to start after I reboot this server and how can I correct this so the services will start up on boot automatically (which is what they are set at)?

Searching a shared drive
by Guest Wowbagger- 0 replies

Does every user have to build a local search index for shared drives - hosted on a Server 2003 Enterprize machine - or is there a way for the server to build its own index and have each desktop query that? The files on the server (several hundred thousand photographs plus all of the other documents) change quite frequently and some of the older machines just can't keep up.

by Guest Sean- 1 reply

I came in this morning to most computers on the network not able to acces the network shares on one domain controller. We have multiple sites set up with multiple domain controllers. We are able to acces shares on other servers. The 2 prevelant errors in the event log are: The Group Policy client-side extension PolicyMaker Registry failed to execute. Please look for any errors reported earlier by that extension. The client-side extension could not remove machine policy for 'Disable Logon Script on DCs {37D6A3D7-B349-4BB8-B683-23CADACDB2F6}' because it failed with error code '0x8007000d The data is invalid.'
