Help!! I need to delete the Windows Update files.......
by Guest AllenM- 7 replies
My C: drive is nearly full with less than 600 MB free space left. And it is all of the Windows Update downloads. I only use 2x18 GB SCSI drives mirrored for my OS and all I basically have on C: is the OS and system programs. Buy my Windows directory is using about 14 GB of the space. C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB823182$ Can I delete these? Or move them to another volume in case I need to uninstall (highly unlikely) these updates? I know I will not be able to use Add/Remove programs to remove once I get rid of these but this is my only option. thanks in advance and apprecite any quick post back.

On a new install of Windows Sever 2003, and firewall not yet setup, are only certain ports open?? I'm trying to get a usb security key to work so I can see it on the server from workstations. Do I have to start the firewall in Windows Server and open the ports I want such as 3047, 1974 even though the workstations are behind the hardware firewall?

Using Office 2007 with redirected folders
by Guest joeB545- 7 replies
Am using redirected folders and roaming profiles for our Win 2003 domain and Office 2007 running on Win XP SP2 clients. My Documents is redirected to the share \\Server\Users\%username%\My Documents. The Open File dialog opens and immediately closes when I press Ctrl + O in Word and Excel; both crash when I attempt to save a new document. Other programs do not exhibit this behavior and I do not have the problems with Office when I am logged on as Administrator. How can I fix this problem? -- joe B

Error Code 8: 0x8007000e Windows Product Activation
by Guest thrombotic@gmail.com- 7 replies
For the past week I started getting the following error. Event ID 1000 Error occurred while wizard was checking the current windows product license. Error Code: 8 0x8007000e. This server has been going strong for 4 years, it currently hosts our website. It has not lost functionality. I have noticed that the page file is up to 2.1 GB and winlogon.exe is running at 491mb. I'm worried that if I reboot the server, it will not be operational because it can't check the product license. We have a hosted web application that we cannot afford to go down for several days. Any thoughts, one way or the other whether I should just reboot? Thx RG

Installing an external disk in a Windows Server 2003
by Guest John- 7 replies
Hi The local disk of the server (Microsoft Server 2003 Standard Edition), we use in the office is full and the data grow constantly. I think of installing a new external disk (WD My Book Studio Edition II - http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=410) and put the data on it. However I do not know if the connection between the server and the external disk (USB 2.0 or FireWire 400/800 or eSATA) is stable. The access on those data from other computers I want to be reliable. Will I have problem with the users’ permissions? Thanks a lot.

Problem with roaming profiles
by Guest Gorge Lucas- 7 replies

Hi, I have a customer who has a roaming profile. This is setup excatly like all my other customers. What happens is the server goes offline for 1-3 seconds for no apparent reason and syncing occurs. When this happens, they lose all their icons on the desktop, quicklaunch etc. This is a SBS 2003 R2 server. There is nothing wrong with the server from what I can see. It's not going down at all. Any ideas?

WS 2008 32-bit MAX Usable RAM?
by Guest David F- 7 replies
I am currently running WS 2008 32-bit on my laptop as a workstation (I'm using PerformancePoint Server 2007 whiich only works on a MS Server OS) and when I use msinfo32.exe it says there is 3.93 GB Total Physical Memory (as opposed to 4 GB Installed Physical Memory). So this means that almost all 4 GB of RAM is available to WS 2008 32-bit. Is that correct? That compares with 3 to 3.5 GB that is available to MS Vista installations. Correct? TIA

Redirection, Synch, Profile Failures
by Guest Innovations- 7 replies

Vista sp1, Server 2003 & 2008 dfs: The users have roaming profiles with the GP redirecting profile folders to a dfs location on the network \\domainname\dfsfilespace\Users\(username)\... profiles are also set to come from \\domainname\dfsfilespace\users\(username) recently redistributed locations on the server and now everthing has gone to crap. Users get messages at logon saying that the server copy of their profile has not been found and they will be logged on with a temporary profile, even though the network and folder appear available. Even moreso running a file sync gives hundreds of Access is Denied errors. This happens even for a newly…

Backup Application Recommendation
by Guest Absolutely- 7 replies
Anyone have a recommendation for a reliable backup to tape application that's simple for end users to maintain? I've been using NovaSTOR products for some of my customers and the later versions of NovaBACKUP and NovaNET have been horribly unreliable and finicky, especially for restores. I know BackupExec and Arcserve are used heavily, but they tend to be a little complicated for the average end user.

mandatory profile problem
by Guest Will Sellers- 7 replies
I have a mandatory profile setup for my student group. I have copied a common profile that all students will see when they log on. I renamed the ntuser.dat to ntuser.man. All students have the profile defined in their AD profile path. In my profile I have administrator and students defined in the security and permissions. When I look at the profile I can see the ntuser.man but somehow another ntuser.dat is being created. How can I prevent that from happening? Is there a way to prevent the creation of a local profile on the desktop?

What is the reason for mapping a network printer instead of sharingone?
by Guest toni321@charter.net- 7 replies
I know this might sound stupid but I am trying to understand the concept of why on a server they have mapped network printers but also they have the printers installed as shares. To me I would pick one or the other. They do not have a print server running so what would be the benefit? Can anyone shed some light on this for me ... Thanks

Network share: What causes " ~ $files" temp files?
by Guest pez- 7 replies
We run 2000 server. We have a network share that all our users have Full Control for. They also have read, write and modify NTFS permissions. Why are temp files constantly being created on this share? It seems that if someone views a file even if they close it properly a temp file is sometimes created. I can not seem to reproduce this "action" on purpose. But if I monitor the folder new ~ $ or temp files are created every day or so. Any ideas?

Cannot PING Windows 2008 RRAS server IP
by Guest N D- 7 replies
I hope somebody in here can assist as I am tearing my hair out. We have three servers A B and C. All are running Windows Server 2003. We use RRAS to setup demand dial between the servers to enable "private" communication between them as opposed to the Internet facing network traffic on the single network card in each. Each server has it's own private (192.168) subnet on the demand dial interface. This has worked fine for a couple of years but now we are going to introduce a fourth server (Lets call it D) running Windows server 2008. I have added the server role to get RRAS installed and configured. I have added a Demand Dial link on the server to connect…

Domain name resolution...
by Guest Andrew Meador- 7 replies

Please do not follow this link, or do so at your own risk - if it even works! I got an e-mail that I suspect is linking me back to a boggus PayPal site. The link is: htp://1422718346:82/cmd_home/index.php I changed http to htp so this would not create an active link. But will this resolve? Can this work as a dns/domain name? I've never seen a domain name like that before and wonder if there is something new being done in domain name resolution, or if I missed something and this has always been able to be done. I know this is an odd place to post this, but I figured server admins with DNS expertise would know. I didn't follow the link, may…

When I try to backup a Windows 2008 based DC, GC etc I get errors on backuping the system state. ----- Backup Exec 12 gives me (open file option either turned off or on): Backup- System?State System?StateThe item System?State\System Files\System Files in use - skipped. ----- Windows Backup gives me: Enumeration of the files failed. The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect. ----- Ok, so we have a system state problem. Are there any tools to diagnose this problem?
