Losing network shares across multiple machines on Windows 2003
by Guest Agrippa- 7 replies

I am running Windows Server 2003 R2 SP1 on a domain with approximately 50 users all with Windows XP SP2. There is a domain controller and a backup domain controller. Periodically throughout the day random, but only one at a time, XP machines will lose access to the network shares while all other machines can continue to happily use the network. Network shares map to more than just one file server - ie, drive X will map to computer1 while drive Y will map to computer2. The user will lose access to ALL network shares. They will still be able to ping the computers by IP address or computer name, but the shared drive will say that it cannot connect and using the UNC …

files locked

I have seen an more cases lately where files on a server share (2003 r2) say they are currently in use when this does not appear to be the case. I have had users complain about this as well. In some cases I am very doubtfull that someone actually does have them opened since no one else should even have right to open. Excel files and word files... maybe even some autocad files. any suggestions?

External Time
by Guest BigSam- 7 replies

I've configured one of my W2k3 domain controllers to use an external time, according to this artice: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816042 In step 4 I set the values for NTPServer to Time.Windows.com,0x1. I stopped & restarted the time service according to the article & then attempted to resync the time with the following command: w32tm /resync /rediscover. This gave the following response: 'The computer did not resync because no time data was available'. Questions: Can I specify more than one external time source, and if Yes, how? Did I use an incorrect command to resync the time? What is the correct command? How can I be sure I've the correct ti…

I have a user that has a "roaming profile" which he can basically go to any computer and log in. Works great! issue is that the icons on his desktop he can't move around. I have tried making sure his settings are not to put them in date order, snap to grid or anything like that and the settings dont stay. They change back to the grid layout. How can I fix this?

Hello, Iam trying to create a database in SQLServer by pointing the database files to a UNC location (\\bigserversnas01\sql_use\) which is a SAN. This requires a trace flag as mentioned in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304261. But when trying to create the database, its giving me this error: Msg 1802, Level 16, State 4, Line 1 CREATE DATABASE failed. Some file names listed could not be created. Check related errors. Msg 5123, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 CREATE FILE encountered operating system error 1337(The security ID structure is invalid.) while attempting to open or create the physical file ' \\bigserversnas01\sql_use\sqldata.mdf '. Ladies and Gents, I got a database server on a remote location which I want to join to my new active directory infrastructure based on 2003. The database server has an IP address of 172.1.9.2/16 and my dc's in the main location 10.0.216.1/21 and 10.0.216.2/21. From both location I am able to ping etc. Now when I want to join the database server I am unable to do so. After I putted in the credentials I recieve after 10-15 sec the error "The RPC server is unavailable". All ports are open between my main and remote location. Anyone got an answer? Windows Server 2003 vs. Windows XP
by Guest Eddie- 7 replies

We have an odd situation with some of our single-threaded CPU-bound C++ programs. They run between 2 and 4 times faster on Windows XP than on Windows Server 2003 on the same Xeon hyperthreading dual processor machine (we borrowed one from our IT department, and have been alternating these two operating systems on it.) Even more odd, if we run a Virtual PC with Windows XP on top of the Windows 2003 Server on the same Xeon machine, this runs faster too. There is nothing else running on the machine during these tests, both operating systems show the expected 25% CPU usage. Next I tried running the programs on my Core 2 Duo with Windows XP, and comparin…

Hi everyone Just a question - how easy would you say is it to buy the MCSE set of books, self study it, ask friends and in forums what you dont know; and go write the exams WITHOUT registering at a educational organization. ....or would you advise to do it through a college, technickon, etc? Obviously you need to have done the coarse to answer the question

WSUS 3 - showing computers but only one at a time
by Guest Ehren- 6 replies

Hello- I have a very strange issue that I have never seen before and wonder if anyone else has any experience with it. We have several computer labs here, each with 10-12 computers. We have a main domain, call it "maindomain" and then we have a separate domain for the labs ... call it "teaching". The WSUS server is in the maindomain and obviously the lab computers are in the teaching domain. In my head this shouldnt be an issue because you just configure the computers via group policy to point to the wsus server and it really doesnt matter what domain its in because its http (right?). To save myself dns hasstles I configured automatic updates via…

by Guest John- 5 replies

I just posted this message without entering a subject (I forgot). This is a reposting with minor change. My backup (Symantec BackupExec version 11d) skips the following files: Unable to open the item \\windows2003.ourdomain.com\C:\WINDOWS\security\edb.log - skipped. Unable to open the item \\windows2003.ourdomain.com\C:\WINDOWS\security\tmp.edb - skipped. Unable to open the item \\windows2003.ourdomain.com\C:\WINDOWS\security\Database\secedit.sdb - skipped. What are those files? Is it safe to exclude them from the backup? Thanks in advance.

A user can "hook up" a drive to the server - let's say F - so that the users F-drive is the servers C-drive. When the user then deletes some files or folders the ydo NOT go to neither the bin on the server nor the bin on the users pc. How can I get a log of "who deleted what and when" on the server ? Best regards KSor, Denmark

Lost all security permissions.
by Guest Eli- 7 replies

Need help with file security permissions. There are a lot of files that for some unknown reason lost all permissions info. If I try to open or copy them I get access denied error. Using cacls command doesn’t help – denied. If I go to security tab there are no permissions set. I have to take over ownership of the file, apply and then close it. Then open security tab again and add “system” account full access, then apply. After that I can see all the permissions that were supposed to be there originally. There are about 5000 files like that spread out around 100s of different folders with different hierarchy. Anyone know why it could of happen and how to…

DHCP clients losing DNS entries
by Guest Christopher A. Newell- 5 replies
- 523 views
Randon (apparently) DHCP clients on my network are losing thier DNS entries. The users report what turn out to be connectivity problems with name based hosts (raw IP related ones obviously resolve just fine.) IPCONFIG ends up revealing a single DNS server entry which is not on my network. I have had several different values, but they all fall in the 16x.X.X.X format. (Today's most recent one was 168.95.1.1) The user PCs are able to reconnect temporarily by executing ipconfig /renew (or re-starting the system.) This is 2003 Server, SP2 (although searcing back in my memory, I seem to recall similar incidents with SP 1 and native 2k3 Server.) Standard…

Ntbackup seems not to start properly 30 to 50% of the time.
by Guest Donald Campbell- 16 replies

Ntbackup seems not to start properly 30 to 50% of the time. I have a simple script running from scheduler. The script runs as expected, however, the ntback command in it does not always run properly. When it fails to run the log file is always empty and has a time stamp 33 minutes after the start of the script. Also when it fails there are no entries for ntback in the event log. This happens on two separate Win2003 R2 server machines. There is a mention in technet that someone being logged in can cause random failures. In the case of these machines no-one is logged in and it is almost every other run that fails. Anyone any ideas? Don C …

Hi, I want to robocopy files created yesterday (based on the "Date Modified" timestamp) It seems to me that the options /MAXLAD /MINLAD /MAXAGE /MINAGE are calculating based on 24 hrs timeframe. For example, if I use /MAXAGE:1 and robocopy at 3pm, I will get the logs from 3pm yesterday up to current time but not the logs at 2:59 pm yesterday. Please advise. Thanks in advance.

how do you do runas on a reg file? or runas on regedit.exe on a reg file. by that I mean. Suppose i'm in a non-admin account. If I want to run an exe, I can right click and do runas, and enter the username and password of an or the administrative account. But I can't do that with a reg file. I can't right click a reg file.. and this doesn't work either C:\WINDOWS>runas /user:Administrator regedit.exe c:\a.reg this works in the sense that it opens up regedit and tries to run the reg file. But can't write to place required 'cos not administrator C:\WINDOWS>regedit.exe c:\a.reg this opens regedit, but I want to run a reg file, i don't want to e…

Slow copy from NT Domain to AD Domain
by Guest Mark- 7 replies
I have an NT Server, SP6 that resides on an NT Domain. It copies large (1GB) files to a AD Member Server that resides in another domain (obviously) - and furthermore the DNS servers for BOTH domains reside in the AD Domain. There are no DNS servers in the NT Domain. To assist with this somewhat - we use host files on the NT Server to direct traffic. When I copy a file within the NT domain the copy speed is avg of 500MB+/s When I copy a file across from NT to AD domain the copy speed drops to 20MB+/s Help. I need to speed this up.

Can you remove DNS from Domain Controller and reinstall to repair?
by Guest Saral6978- 14 replies
I'm having issues with the DNS server service - when set to automatic it won't allow my DC to boot - hangs on Preparing Network Connections. If I set it to Manual it boots up and I can login and then I start DNS manually after login. I believe the problem started after a recent MS Update. I'm toying with the idea of uninstalling DNS and reinstalling while it is still a DC with Active Directory. Can I do that or no?
