Do I need defragment on server running RAID 5?
by Guest Bobson- 7 replies

Hi everyone, I would like to ask if I need to run the defragment on a server running RAID 5 (hardware)? If so, have anyone tried the 3rd party like Diskkeeper? Any comments? Also, no matter what I used to defragment, would that mess up the Shadow Copy on the data or the config on the server? I just read thru some posts here so I ask this one. Thank you very much in advance for your help! Bobson

Hi, I have a funny kind of setup ... exchange server is running the main dns server its dns settings are pointing to itself as primary and for secondary its pointing to a DC which is running the secondary zone. why have exchange server point to DC which is running a backup dns server. Shouldnt it always be able to query itself? Also isnt it a best practice not to run the primary DNS from the exchange server? thanks

Printing with Mandatory Profiles
by Guest TVITBRIAN- 0 replies

I had posted this problem before with no responses. I've come across another piece of the puzzle. I'll break down the problem for you all. School 2 domain controllers Students all use the same Mandatory Profile Printer's are being pushed with Server 2003 R2 pushprinterconnections.exe. The problem is that randomly students aren't able to print. Not a test page, not from word, not from anywhere. When you try to print a test page it says that the printer is not setup correctly and asks if you want to run the windows printing help wizard. Basically it's like it's missing the driver. A restart of the PC puts a bandaid on the problem. The interesting p…

SMB on member servers...
by Guest JRink- 0 replies

By default, it seems like a Windows 2003 Server that is NOT a DC does not have SMB signing enabled on it. That being the case, an XP machine connecting to the 2003 file server would NOT use SMB signing. I find this really odd. I'm assuming this is done because of the slight performance hit created by SMB signing. Does anyone actually turn ENABLE SMB signing on member servers so the clients can communicate with it securely? Due to our environment, I'm concerned about man-in-the-middle attacks... Looking for feedback, thanks. JR

Server Activity

I'm looking for some suggestions on how to monitor what a user is doing while they are logged into our server. We have a user with administrative rights that logs into our server and helps us when we have problems. I've noticed some some changes and errors that have given us reason to think there might be something more going on that what he's paid to do. Is there anything we could use to monitor and log what this user is doing? It's always a remote connection so something like a keylogger would not work. I appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

by Guest Robert Jacobs- 0 replies

I hope that someone has run into this problem before... I have been asked to post this here: Our company has a large number of laptop computers (which seem to be the only machines affected for now) that are used outside of the office. The users logon to their computers using a cached domain username and password. The problem.... All of a sudden (and yes, I do mean all of a sudden) when they attempt to logon to their machine they get the error message "The system cannot log you on now because the domain <domain name> is not available". I have seen this many many times, so it didn't concern me to begin with. The part that concerned me is when I…

ESENT TCPSVCS (1216) error every so often.. server is CM 2007/DPMagent/DC/DHCP server.. I get this message every so often and i'm not sure why.. i've tried reconciling the scope in DHCP.. but there were no errors there.. This server is a GC/DC/DNS/DHCP/file server/CM 2007/ DPM agent 2007 installed... (exchange is on a different box) Eventid 215, source ESENT tcpsvcs (1216) The backup has been stopped because it was halted by the client or the connection with the client failed. Any help or clues would be great. As a side note.. i'm unable to replicate data to our DPM 2007 server.. it times out with communication errors.. which may be related...

NTFS Boot Disk Creation
by Guest davidtheweb- 4 replies

I am looking to be able to access NTFS drives from a command line only environment (ie: Not loading all of Windows first, just accessing the drives to do a reinstall of the OS from a partition) I've found DOS Boot Disks, but they only access FATxx drives, not NTFS. A search for NTFS bootables hasn't borne fruit yet, so I'm seeing if our forum has ideas and solutions.

Cannot get clients or second DC to synch time with PDC Emulator.
by Guest Matthew Adkins- 1 reply

One of my customers has 2 Windows 2003 DCs and about 50 desktops running Windows XP Pro SP2. Both DCS had the time settings screwed up in the registry and in group policy and the desktops were not updating time except on bootup through a login script. I changed the group policy settings back to where an internet poist said they should be and then deregistered w32tm and re-registered the .dll in order to reset the registry settings in both DCs. I then added the external time synch info for the PDC and it instantly began pulling time on the PDC emulator. No matter what I try, though, I cannot get the other DC to synch time. AD and DNS are passing all tests …
