WE had had a number of staff leave the company some of which had remote access to the server. their accounts have been deleted, but we are suspecting they may still have access to the server. they had a vpn connection to the server and possibly a remote desktop connection to run a specific database. I have to presume that cause the usename had been deleted there is no way they can get access unless they have the administrator password or another employees details If i do change the administrator password will this cause any other problems, we run std server 2003 and a seperate exchange 2003 server can i generate any reports from my server to sho…

cant manage DNS
by Guest James W. Long- 5 replies

Hi all I just went thru the nightmare of trying to install sp2 on win2k3 server and it didnt work, so I rolled it back. but evidently its not all rolled back. I cant administrate DNS anymore here is the error, when I click the DNS shortcut. MMC cannot open the file c:\windows\system32\dnsmgmt.msc. this may be because the file does not exist or is not an mmc console, or was created by a later version of MMC. this may also be because you do not have sufficient access rights to the file. Tthis is the only console I have found with this problem. I am the administrator. How do I get my DNS console back? Thank you, James W. Long

Hi, I've got 2 identical servers (1 spare) My live server died today (Funny how it was after a Windows update!) I placed the disk in the other machine and it wasn't recognised so I couldn't get the data off it. So, I went home and got yesterdays backup tape (1 Hour Drive) I restored the tape and the machine won't boot. I then reinstalled Windows and applied service pack 2, then restored the tape. I selected overwite all files or was it overwrite if older. When I boot up It hangs on acpitabl.dat I tried to get into the recovery console and I cannot log on as the Administrator Account was renamed to Fred and I have a £ in the password. I assu…

IIS Sites work Externally not Internally(localhost)
by Guest Brock Hensley- 0 replies

I've come across something interesting here.. None of the sites in IIS(v6 on 2k3server) work locally, ie: localhost (for default site) or any other domains/right-click-Browse.... comes up with: "This program cannot display the webpage.. You are not connected to the internet / website is encountering problems / might be typing error in address"... There are no entries in the log file for the site.. it seems to be a DNS issue but I am able to (on server) ping yahoo, nslookup the domain resolves to the correct IP (itself). I've checked Permissions on the folders and they look in order, as the sites are pulling up externally but not on the server itself, I…

WDS capture image problemas
by Guest eduardo- 0 replies
Hi, I have installed a Win2003 Sp2 server, its a DC, DNS, DHCP, and installed recently WDS. I configured the server, created a boot image of the boot.wim from an WS2008 RC0 disc that I have, then create from that image a capture imagen, and recreated a new boot image from that capture image. Installed a WinXP, and installed the basic apps. Rebooted the XP into PXE mode, the WDS appears, I selected the capture image I created, and the wizard stars, but when it tells me to select the drive to capture the image, the drop down list box doesn´t appear anything.... I even tried with another XP and the same issue happens, also tried using a Vista Machine and agai…

Hi, I am trying to migrate the printer drivers from one windows 2003 server to another. I am using http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsServer2003/techinfo/overview/printmigrator3.1.mspx for some reason - I see the following error when I am restoring the cab file. The error is; The target machine does not have LPR installed. Could this be the one that is causing because the printers restore fine but they all appear as offline. When I try to right click the printer and select 'use printer online' , I get the following error: "Operation could not be completed." Can anybody please help? Thanks

csrss.exe takes a lot of I/O
by Guest Sleb- 2 replies

Hi, I'm starting to get this problem on multiple windows 2003 servers (different clients). All those servers have remote desktop enabled. When we open a remote desktop connexion, the csrss.exe process takes a lot of disk activity resulting in slow server response. As soon as we log off from the terminal session, everything comes back to normal. I used process explorer to figure out what was the problem; i/o bytes always between 30 and 40 megs with process csrss.exe. Please do not respond with alternatives of using other products to take possession of the server. One of those server is a terminal server. Anyone has an idea what can be done? Thanks

Hello all. I have a small not for profit I'm trying to help and they want to do the following: - Build a new Windows 2003 server - Migrate their AD, DNS, DHCP, etc from their old (dying) server running Windows 2000 - Make it as seamless as possible to the end users Building the new server is not an issue. Questions arise around, should I join it to the current domain and promote it to an AD master? What are the right steps to then shut down the old server? Thanks, M -- mpr2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ mpr2007's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/member.php?userid=35696 View this thread: http://f…

Hi, We have almost 300 computers at our company. At the beginning when we started we had all computers the same (the same hardware configuration). We was using symantec ghost for computer clonning. We first install all software on one machine and later on we ghost it to all 300 machines. Later on we run Ghostwalk to change name and SID. Now we have newer and older computers and we have to keep seperate ghost images for every batch of the computers. Is there any other solution to clone images to different hardware configuration without need to have so many different images. We run Network with 2 Domain controlers running windows 2003. Where can I find any …

Hello, the option "Optimize for Quick Removal", which kann be activated for USB-Disks (for disabling write-cache), is greyed out for IDE, SCSI and FC-LUNs. Does anybody has an idea, how to disable the write-cache (enable "Optimize for Quick Removal"-option) for disks, where this point is greyed out? Thanks and regards Rudolf
