Admin access to roaming profiles (existing folders)
by Guest Rickard- 7 replies

I'm trying to figure out how to give administrators access to roaming profile folders stored on a server. I've set "Add the administrators security group to roaming user profiles" in a group policy object which takes care of any future profiles, but now I'm stuck with approx 5000 existing folder to which administrators do not have access. I believe the process to give admin access is: 1. Take ownership as admin (recursively). 2. Grant full control to administrators. 3. Give ownership back to the original user (recursively). However, doing this manually is a huge pain and considering we have about 5000 folders to go through, I would prefer an automated sol…

Can't install IIS on 2003 server
by Guest Chad Bailey- 1 reply

I'm trying to install IIS on a windows 20003 server R2 with service pack 2. Every time it stops at the same point and prompts me with... "Setup cannot copy the file convlog.exe. Ensure that the location specified below is correct, or change it and insert 'Service Pack 2 CD-ROM' in the drive you specify." I have tried pointing it to the I386 directory on the install CD. I have tried reinstalling SP2 and then running the IIS setup again. All to no avail. It always stops and prompts for that same file. I'm frustrated. Any ideas for me? Thanks. Chad

we had our file server crash. we got a replacement up and recovered the data, but the original was shot. I had some concerns about naming the replacement the same as the crashed server, (and was in a real hurry) so I created a new server and copied the data to it. we always redirect users My Document folders to the file server, and set the PCs up for offline folders, so their data is cached on their PCs. now I have an issue in that some, not all, of the PCs are still trying to sync with the old server, even while their My Documents are now directed to the new one. and syncing with the new one as well. how do I stop the PC from trying to sync with t…

opinion on dell RD100 internal SDA drive instead of tape backup?
by Guest Gary M- 0 replies

I have a friend with a small business who is looking at getting his first server. he is looking at windows server 2003, and instead of tape backup dell has recommended his going with their RD1000, its an internal SATA drive with removable 80/160 hard drive. what are the opinions on using several of these as backup instead of tape? he really doesnt care about restoring lost files or previous versions of data, more just for disaster recovery purposes. wants to be able to always keep one of thise offsite in case of disaster. myself, we have always used tape backups, but from time to time we are asked to restore a folder someone has deleted, or they hav…

Disconnected network shares
by Guest Jeff- 12 replies

I have approximately 100 users on our network that consists of 7 servers. There are approximately 1 dozen users that get disconnected from one server consistantly. That is a W2K server with network shares. I am pretty sure it is a DNS issue because I can ipconfig /release /renew and that works (most of the time). Sometimes I do not even have to do that, just click on the shared drive and it comes back. Thanks, Jeff

Windows 2003 Domain Controller Won't Sync Time w/ External Clock
by Guest Marks70- 0 replies

I have a very small domain consisting of one domain controller and a member server. I've tried configuring the DC to synchronize its clock with an external source following MS article: How to configure an authoritative time server in Windows Server 2003 (816042). My DC does have the PDC operations role assigned to it. However, I keep getting the following errors logged in my System Event Log: Source: W32Time Event ID: 38 The time provider NtpClient cannot reach or is currently receiving invalid time data from time.nist.gov (ntp.m|0x8|192.168.99.28:123->192.43.244.18:123). Demoting DC and Removal from Sites and Services

If you remove the dc role from a member domain controller should it not automatically remove that servers entry from the site and sabnet entry under Sites and Services for all other member dc's and the master dc? this is windows 2003 i am referring to here. If so, how does it normally take for this to change to replicate and appear between servers. Thanks

how to remove printer installed to machine?
by Guest totoro- 2 replies
I've been tinkering with Print Management on 2003 R2 and was having great success installing printers to PCs using GPO. Works like a dream. But once the printers are on the machine they seem to be on for ever. No user can delete them. Every user on the PC has to connect to every printer at log-on. Forever. I think that's a bit much. Is there a way to remove these deployed printers? I have had success connecting by user with log-on scripts. That seems more flexible. Thanks for you help!!!

Preventing users from copying one folder into another
by Guest Neil- 2 replies

I have a few users who have access to a share that keep accidently moving folders into the folders next to them by moving the mouse a bit between clicks when double-clicking a folder. Is there a permission I can assign that will prevent a user from moving or deleting a root folder but maintain permissions to move or delete the contents of that folder?

How to Force a Password Change Prompt?
by Guest Trent- 3 replies
Within our enterprise we have a number of computers that logon to AD using a generic auto-login account. Nurses then use these computers to run their clinical applications which have their own security. When these nurses use the PC to go to the internet they are prompted by the ISA proxy server for their credentials. They give them and then go. Problem: We will soon be forcing all users passwords to expire every 60 days but since these nurses only use their credentials to authenticate out to the internet through ISA I have no apparent way to prompt them to change their passwords when they are about to expire. Anyone know of any way to do this?

When is no page file required?
by Guest Neufusion- 2 replies

How to determine the appropriate page file size for 64-bit versions of Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/kb/889654/ The article stated "When lots of memory is added to a computer, a paging file may not be required.". and "If you have enough RAM installed in your computer, you may not require a page file at all, unless one is required by a specific application." Has anyone out there ever seen a server that is able to run without a page file? If so, what were it's specs and what was running on it?

Properly Remove AD Server?

I have an aging AD server that I would like to remove from the domain. I have its replacement in place. DNS and DHCP duties have been migrated to the new box, AD is running on the new box and has been for two weeks now. How do I properly remove the old AD server from the domain? Does it make any difference that this server was the first AD server in the domain? This is a W2k AD domain. Thx in advance for any help/advice!

Move Certificate authority from DC to member server
by Guest youngny- 0 replies
Hi, In my current environment I've 3DC running windows 2003 SP1, one dc is running Certificate authority and it is also running IAS. My goal is to remove CA from the DC and install it on a member server and remove IIS from the DCs to improve the security of the DCs. We are using IAS for the wireless client authentication. The current certificate which is installed on the clients will expire next year in April. Are there any guidelines to remove CA from DC to a member server. Should I leave IAS on the DC or move it to a member server. I've read it is better to leave IAS on a DC for performence reasons. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

Sharing printers on a different domain ?
by Guest pcmangler@googlemail.com- 0 replies

Hi, As part of the way my company does server upgrades, we install a temporary server (a DC for it's own 'TEMP' domain) running SQL and our software, then put Remote Desktop Client on the site's PC's pointing at the temporary server, allowing them to continue using our software via RDP whilst we rebuild their original server. (we transfer roles to a virtual server to run the domain whilst rebuilding). The printing is causing a few problems though, as we share a couple of printers that are attached to the site's PCs, and add them to the temp server on local ports - e.g. \\pc-name\sharename. However, the site's PCs are still on their original domain and whenev…

IPSec policy on servers connected to 2 networks
by Guest Stuart- 2 replies
Hi. I am currently investigating how to setup an IPSec policy on a small network (single domain) of ~20 windows 2003 and 2000 servers and ~10 windows xp and 2000 workstations. Of the 20 servers 5 of them are directly connected to other networks via a second nic, the IP address ranges of these second network connections also vary. If possible can anyone advise how I can deploy a policy to enable IPSec on the internal domain traffic while still allowing these 5 servers to continue communicating to their second network in the clear ? I'm comfortable with setting up IPSec, it's how to handle the two network issue I'm stuck on. Thanks, Stuart.

Adding a new (additional) domain controller

Hi, we have 2 domain controllers - called pkcore and pkserv1. pkcore has all the (5) fsmo roles. I am trying to upgrade pkserv1 as we are running short on space on the C (system drive). Would it be a good strategy to install windows 2003 on a new server called DC1 and dcpromo it. Then can I retire pkserv1 by demoting it. Thanks

Domain Admin user often won't refresh profile
by Guest Bob- 1 reply

Hi, I notice that when a Domain Admin user logs on to the domain, it often will not synchronize its local and roaming profile. If I were to make significant changes to the local profile (such as modifying many Favorites url's), it then will synchronize. But if I do a small change (such as change the properties of one shortcut), that will not synchronize. If I delete the local profile, it will refresh from the roaming just fine. Of course I only notice the problem when the user logs onto a different DC and the changes don't synchronize (even though I will find changes in the roaming profile). Logging on to an XP workstation seems fine however. I…
