Hi, I've got a critical problem on a sbs2k3 server: Windows logbook shows alot of aarich HD errors and already needed to repair the exchange mailbox store twice. Therefore I want to replace the disks, but since the controller only supports SATA disks and I want to replace them with SAS disks I need to install a new controller aswell. Has anyone every had experience with this? How I would do it... 1. Create a full backup using ntbackup 2. Installing a new controller & 4 new SAS disks with RAID5 + HS 3. Disabling the onboard controller 4. Installing sbs2k3 & all updates 5. Performing a full recover using ntbackup I created in step 1 It's ver…

User Migration from Win2k - W2k3 - disk quota
by Guest Andy- 3 replies
When I migrated users from Win2k -> W2k3, their disk quota setting is not copied over, it has been configured to the default disk quota setting. For example For folder \\server\data, disk quota default setting for all users is 100MB. But for managers is 1GB. After the migration, the managers, developers and IT department users disk quota setting has been configured to the default setting, which is 100MB. Any workaround? Andy

SSL 2.0 Vulernability
by Guest Andy W- 1 reply

Hello Everyone, Our servers were scanned for vulnerabilities. One thing that came up with web servers that had certificates on them was SSL V2 being enabled, which is a Vulnerability. KB 187498 was referenced to disable SSL V2. Seems straightforward enough except for one part. Below I've pasted the section where I get confused. "Microsoft Windows NT Server stores information about different security-enhanced channel protocols that Windows NT Server supports. This information is stored in the following registry key: HKey_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders \SCHANNEL\Protocols Typically, this key contains the follow…

Two hours to boot up
by Guest Sam- 4 replies

Windows 2003 R2 domain controller is taking more than 2 hours to boot up. How should I troubleshoot? This was originally a W2K domain. I setup this 2003 server in same domain as DC & DNS, then GC. Moved 5 FSMO rules (KB 324801). Demote the old W2K server and removed it from network. Before transferring GC & FSMO, new 2003 server was booting up fine.

Insufficient privilege to remote shutdown a server
by Guest Alain H. Crispiels- 6 replies

Hello, A domain user (not an admin) from a WinXP machine has sometimes to restart a remote member server into the same domain. I've created a local group on that server with the remote shutdown right. The domain user is member of that local group. Now, from his WinXP, when he's executing the command "shutdown -r -f -m", he's receiving an error message : "insufficient privilege...". If, just for test, this domain user is also local admin of his WinXP machine, it's ok. How to permit him to execute this command without to be local admin ? Alain

I am trying to migrate to a new server using the a server migration tool. The problem I have run into is it will not see my d: drive. It sees the c: and f: drives no problem. Looking into this problem the disk management utility shows the drive as not having a file system and 100% free space although explorer shows there is 43gb used on this drive and it has been working fine otherwise. The probelm of it not showing up is also happening in the defrag utility that comes with windows. I ran the dmdiag utility and it shows the drive letter to device name properly, but does not show a mount point. The drive is a dynamic disk that works fine otherwise. Server…

Connecting to File Server
by Guest anthony@necrofiends.com- 1 reply

I set-up a new server on my network. It's primarily being used for storage. I joined it to the domain, so it's basically acting as a domain computer. When users try to access shared files, they're prompted for a username and password. They do that and they're denied access. If I set-up a local account for them on the server, it lets them access the shares. How do I make it so they're not prompted for a username or password?

Hi Is it possible to restore an event log - specifically security events.? I've read somewhere that this would require restoring the entire system state - but this is something I wouldn't want to do. I did save the log in .csv format (don't know why I did this) Is there any way of getting this back to .evt format - so that it could be opened in event viewer? Thanks

Hello, There's a little bit strange behavior of update KB940349 on Windows 2003 R2 x64. When I install this update, it removes vssadmin.exe, vssvc.exe (and several others) files from C:\WINDOWS\System32. When I remove this update, it restores the files back to C:\WINDOWS\System32. Does anyone know why there is such behavior? Kind Regards, Andrey Nepomnyaschih

Win2k AD Restore from Backup
by Guest soup_or_power@yahoo.com- 5 replies

I have asked this before in another thread with a deafening silence from the experts. I think as a computer user/administrator/programmer one gets frustrated to know that a certain backup cannot be restored because the manufacturer of the backup appliance has dictated so. I consider AD is a data repository. Like any database, one should be able to restore into this repository. I like the Opensource code for this reason alone. When I accidentally erased some database in mysql, I was able to restore the data from a backup. All I did was tar xvf in linux parlance. Nothing fantastic. However, with this AD for however long I have been in touch with the Sonicwall dumbo…

free up space

Hi Folks, I have a 2003 updated server with Exchange 2003 and SMS for Exchange on it. I have cleaned up all temp files, uninstalled all unnecessary programs, cleared my quarantines, etc. I keep slowly losing space still though and I cannot figure out why. I am virus free, no spyware since I have gotten rid of all types of temp files, and cannot figure out why I keep slowly losing space. Are there spots in Windows where there are log files I could clear or anything else at all that might accumulate data over time? Thanks in advance!

tmp files on one account will not go away
by Guest NJ- 0 replies

I keep getting a screen full of temporary files on a general student account at my school. Most of them start with "prf" which leaves me thinking they're temporary preference files? Anyway, I delete them out of the user's folder on the server and have even gone into the lab where the account is enabled to delete these files. No matter what I seem to do they keep coming back. Does anyone have an idea on what's causing this and how to get rid of it?

Windows Server 2003 ASR Question
by Guest Robert Lindholm- 0 replies
Hello: I realize that the Automated System Recovery [ASR] process is different then the Emergency Recovery Disk [ERD] process, but its unclear if I can simply create an ASR disk or can an ASR disk only be created as part of a NTBackup operation? With ERD, you could make an ERD floppy without having to perform an additional backup using NTBackup, but with ASR, it seems as if you need to "piggyback" the ASR process onto a NTBackup. Is there a way to create an ASR disk without performing a NTBackup or if that's not possible, what is the minimal NTBackup type or more specifically how do you select the least amount of data to be backed up during the c…
