by Guest Larry Scott- 1 reply

I upgraded Windows Server 2008 x64 gold with the RC0 Hyper-V KB949219. The upgrade went without incident except when I tried to start the previously installed clients. All the clients generated the following error message: "An error occurred while attempting to change the state of the virtual machine "machine name". "machine name" failed to initialize. Failed to read or update VM configuration. This is BAD!

Windows 2008 - Disable the spinning blue circle ?
by Guest Peter Lawton- 0 replies

Strange request but does anyone know if there's a way to disable the small spinning blue circle that's displayed during logon, logoff, startup & shutdown, next to the description of what's happening? It's because I'm running a few servers with lights out management cards and the spinning circle really upsets them Peter Lawton

I have two Windows Standard servers 2003 R2 that will not open "help and support" and msinfo32. Have searched documents - found two 937055 and 937231. The first one says run command lines. I get error " no mapping between account names and security ID's was done" . The second one says apply for a hotfix by email - which I never received. I have requested this twice. What should I do to fix this? -- MD

Offline Files

Hi all, I am not sure why I would want to use offline files? Scenario is as follows: On my local workstation I have my document folder that I write and change files. On my server I have folder redirection enabled. If I change files on my local workstation they change on the server as well. If my server goes down I still have a local copy on my workstation. If I make any changes while the server is down....so what, they will get copied when the server comes back online.....right??? Am I missing something?? Some of the folders in our file system contain sensitive financial data. The file server is managed by our IT department. How do I restrict the people in Domain Admins group (some of them are from IT Department) from accessing sensitive data? If I remove read permissions to Domain Admins, backup jobs may fail.

Hi, I'm considering installing MS Search Server 2008 on a NAS box to speed up searching across network shares. The NAS is the Iomega 450r with Windows Storage Server preconfigured. Does anybody know if there are any restrictions (either from a license or technucal stand point) on Windows Storage Server 2003 to installing something like search server. Thanks Paul

Workstatons lose connection to server overnight
by Guest DBCallaghan.SpmOff@googlemail.com- 2 replies

Hi This is a similar problem to others seen here like "Workstations lose connection to server after 10 hours" BUT I can't follow even the first instruction as we don't have a internic approved domain name. Here's our problem: We leave our PCs switched on and logged in overnight. During the night our PCs lose their network connection. On re-booting the PCs login and regain their network connection with no problems and work fine throughout the day. The PCs have all their power saving features disabled and in particular have the power saving features of the network card turned off. All power saving features of the server are also turned off. Some ne…

Running Window's Update on server
by Guest Tomg- 6 replies

We recently had an issue with a .dll file being locked on the server (Win2003) and we are trying to track down the cause. Will a Windows Update that is ran on a server scan all the directories and lock any .dll file? If so, is there a specific type of update that will lock .dll files? Example: Was there items in the March 2008 update that would have locked a .dll file and not in the February 2008 update? Thanks, Tom Greenway

Hi There, I am thinking of turning on folder redirection to point various desktop folders to the server. If people have laptops does it sync the next time they are connected? I have had nightmares with ActiveSync and Offline Folders in the past. -- I'm trying a new usenet client for Mac, Nemo OS X. You can download it at http://www.malcom-mac.com/nemo

scavenging issue (fix addresses being scavenged)
by Guest bisi- 2 replies

Hello, we have our printers configured to do DHCP with fix reservations. DNS- entries are being added manually for each printer since DNS security is activated. We activated scavenging a few weeks ago and now our printers start disappearing in DNS, even if manually added adresses normaly should not get affected by scavenging. When I had a deeper look with dnscmd, I saw that most of the printers have the timestamp set to 01.01.1601, so they should be ignored in scavening. Others have an actual timestamp dating from a few days ago, so they will be deleted in a few days or weeks when records get "obsolete". It seems to me that the time stamps get updated when…

by Guest Ian Zahn- 3 replies

Hi, We have a HP ML350 G3 with Windows 2003 SP2. It is used for WSUS, Print Server, Etrust Admin Server, SQLAnywhere database and some small IIS programs. The server is rebooting sporaticly, not at the smae time each day, not every day but nearly sometimes multi times a day. I think it is driver related but how do I diagnose this? It actually stared probably 6 months ago, but very seldom, now it is daily. I have run the latest HP drivers through it, though not the printer drivers that it hosts. Is there a program like pstat that I can run? I ran this but do not understand output. Here is the system error 1003 Error code 000000d1, parameter1 00000008, p…
