Help - administrator locked out!
by Guest Ageing Brilliantine Stick Insect- 12 replies

I have just come back from 6 weeks leave. While I was gone, users at one of our remote branches started getting 'must change password in xx days' messages (they have their own 1-server domain running W2K3). Being users, all they did was to note down the message, and then ring the help desk the day AFTER xx days had expired! Now all their passwords have expired (apart from 2 users who changed theirs in the required time) and they cannot log onto the domain. The really strange thing is that the passwords for the domain administrator appear to have expired also, as well as the 'back-door' account I set up for myself for just such an occurrence. Their server s…

Internet Over a VPN connection
by Guest David- 4 replies

Our customer would like to set all remote clients to access the internet though the VPN. This isn't a problem but one of the requests is that traffic to two specific sites doesn't go over the VPN and goes straight out of their home ADSL connection. I'm sure this cannot be done but just wanted clarification.

DHCP not providing correct DNS all of the time
by Guest Jeremey- 1 reply

Hello, I have a client that is having an issue after demoting old Windows 2000 Server, which prior to putting in a new 2003 server was the FSMO roles holder, that some times when a pc reboots it points to the 2000 server for DNS when the DHCP server on the 2003 DC is set for the DHCP server to give the 2003 IP as the DNS server. The only way around the fix is to flush dns and a release/renew and then it gets the correct IP. When this does happen it shows that it obtained the IP from the 2003 server and not some rogue DHCP server. The goal is to shut down the 2000 server and upgrade some parts so it can be reinstalled as a 2003 server, but until we can …

I am taking a college class right now for Server 2003. I currently have the following question to answer, which I cannot find the answer to: "How many users can login to a Windows 2003 server remotely?" The choices are: 1, 2, 4, or 8. Any ideas?

I need to get good at understanding Perfmon ... FAST. I've come across a lot of pages, that give some good information, but it's mostly bits and pieces of the whole. Perfmon's help doesn't do too much for "Understanding" the product either. Any links anyone? I have a bunch of servers dragging my career into an early grave.

Mailbox Names

I have a customer "Mike" that had a mailbox and user setup as MikeW@xyz.com. The user was modified to Mike and I would like to have his Exchange e-mail box to be Mike@xyz.com as well. When I go to attach it in Pop 3 it only shows as MikeW for the Exchange mailbox. When I try to modify his user mailbox in user properties it will change it to Mike and then change it back to MikeW. Also since the user properties has MikeW I cannot modify it in the distribution list as well. Help please. I am totally lost.

Ok so I have 2 180-day trial versions of Windows Server 2003 that came with college text books. If I were to install one of these on a machine, and the trial period expires, can I just enter the key for the second copy to keep using this for another 180 days, or will I need to do a fresh install and enter the second key to continue use? TIA

Opening PDFs in Server 2003
by Guest maltman- 1 reply
I don't know if anyone else has experienced this but when my users try and open a PDF from any of our terminal servers, they are not allowed to open it. It pops up with the message for them to save the file. All of our terminal servers are running Windows Server 2003. Has anyone encountered this and know of a way around it? I was told that it has to do with Server 2003 blocking the pdf extension. If this is the case, is there no work around? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Matt

Indexing service - is it used by Windows?
by Guest Rob Nicholson- 0 replies

Is the indexing service used internally by Windows 2003 Server? I've just set-up a new Windows 2003 Server and the System catalogue contains c:\ which means it indexes the entire C: drive. Why does it do this, can this be deleted and does it cause problems with using the web catalogue? When you search a catalogue using the webbot, does it just search the web catalogue? Thanks, Rob.

Problems with WSUS on SBS 2003
by Guest yaro137@googlemail.com- 1 reply

I installed WSUS 3.0 SP1 on 2 SBS2003 servers on different networks and both the installations look slightly different. E.g. in a custom mmc on one of the servers I can add SBS Update Services snap-in whereas on the other one I have only Update Services which look a lot different. Then the server that uses proxy and has ISA server installed gives me Cannot Display the Webpage message when I try accessing WSUS management console from https://servername:8530/WsusAdmin. Moreover when I get to the Update Services console on it it doesn't detect any other computers. The other one detects all of the computers on it's network but in my custom mmc in SBS Update Services…

Roaming User Profiles
by Guest -Draino-- 2 replies

Quick question on Roaming Profiles. This is what I want to do: 1.) When I log directly into the Server 2003 from the Server itself, I have setup a basic default profile by configuring my settings that I want on the server. 2.) I have 2 workstations (XPSP2) that I want to look the same no matter what. I have configured my profile to be different on the workstations than the server. If I add another workstation I want it to look the same as the all the other workstations. I know how to setup the profile path on the Server, but what I don't know is, what will happen. On the Server if I type \\SERVERNAME\Profiles\MY NAME in the Profiles Tab what w…
