I've set my prompt string to: $_Connected to:$S%computername%$Sas:$S %username%$_$p$g using this registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM \CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment and then logged off and on again. When I start cmd.exe, it displays as: Connected to: TESTBOX1 as: %username% C:\Documents and Settings\testuser1> Does anyone know why %computername% resolves correctly but %username% does not?

File Share - DNS Alias
by Guest Hutch- 1 reply

Recently moved from an older server, to a new file server with larger capacity. At issue however is the GPO's that had been setup to look after program installs (MS Office, etc). These GPO's were setup to point to ServerA. We have moved the install points to ServerB. I had thought that the simplest thing to do was: In DNS - Create A record for ServerB Then - Create CNAME alias for ServerA, pointing to ServerB. The problem is, if I update the GPO's to point to ServerB, then it will force a re-install on all our client machines (we have had this happen before). The Alias, while I can ping it properly, I cannot map to it using UNC. I get an err…

I support a number of servers and some of the counters are not invoking. For example, %user utilisation,%, processor utilisation, %pagefile us, Average Memory. The PerfMon.wmi does not have these options to add in the System Monitor Properties. However on some of the servers they are in the Performance Monitor (not wmi) and in MMC Does anyone know how to add them into the Data [tab] Performance Object field??? Any help would be great. -- Two Wrongs Can Make A Right

I have prepared .NET 2.0 Desktop App for my college library. My college System Admin set-up the library network with Windows 2003 server & XP clients, and has handed over its responsibilities to me. I have some experience with Active Directory & Group Policies, but I'm not an Admin. I have set-up OUs & appropriate Group Policies for various clients. I am looking for help in 2 specific areas: 1) First, each client has a varying number of hard-disk partitions. Active Directory Group Policy allows me to restrict access to either A,B,C,D or all drives. Some of these clients have up-to 6-7 partitions & I need to restrict access to some of them…

Can't search for ADS users in computer management
by Guest jens.wannenmacher@gmail.com- 2 replies

Hello, we have some computers in a Windows Server 2003 domain and have the following problem(s): * logged on to a domain computer with a user that is domain admin and opened computer management -> Local Users and Groups -> Groups * If I try to add a user to a group I only get the local computer as location and can't add any domain users to the local group * If I open a group that already contains some domain users it takes very long to display. The domain users show up not as normally only with their usernames but also with there unique ID (S-1-5-21-821....). Any suggestions? The domain controller is reachable and I get almost the sam…

Can't access shared files as Domain Admin
by Guest Neil- 2 replies

I have a Windows 2003 Server (non-domain controller) that is acting funny. It doesn't seem to be able to access any of the files on remote shares in the same domain even though I am logged in as the Domain Admin. I can browse the directories and copy the files in them to other places with no problem but I can't actually run anything. However, when I go to copy something it asks me "Do you want to move or copy files from this zone?", making me think I set up DNS incorrectly. When I check DNS on this server the Forward and Reverse lookup zones look identical to those on the primary DNS server and there aren't any errors in the Event Viewer, so I'm no…

Is there any application provided by Windows Server 2003 that would let us do accounting for how many hours a user spends *actively* logged into a specific server? We expect users to come into the server by RDP, and we do NOT want to capture the time they spend logged in but disconnected. We are only concerned with doing time accounting for how many hours per two week period they spend in an active login. If there are third party applications to do this kind of time accounting, I would appreciate the reference. -- Will

Storing Documents And Settings on a mounted drive
by Guest gambool- 3 replies

Although I've seen many threads describing how to move the D&S, I couldnt find anything on the following. I want to mount a new drive as C:\Documents And Settings. So effectively not change the setings for D&S, just store it on a mount. Can this be done easily? (How would it be done while the folder is in use?). Many thanks. Red.
