sporadic restart of server
by Guest egalois- 2 replies

I have a Windows 2003 server that is shutting down on me at increasing frequency. Seems once a day now. I'm guessing that it's a hardware issue (no particular reason yet). In any case, I want to identify exactly when it is shutting down (how many times, how often) in the event logs. Can someone advise me on an event ID to look for that will reliably tell me a shutdown has happened? I want to see the history of these shutdowns. thanks

Hi, I have a client that is subject to the laws of HIPAA. For remote access they require a two factor authentication process. So username and password and 'something else'. Now for the wrench, they want to use Remote Desktop, not VPN for remote access. Is there anyway to tie in IAS and Remote Desktop? Thanks, Laurie

Moving a PDC to new hardware
by Guest Mike Lloyd-Jones- 1 reply

Hi Haven't done this before so seeking some basic advice We have a Windows 2000 server as a domain controller in a small network with about a dozen XP clients We need to move to a new Windows 2003 server (new physical server) with minimum disruption to the client PC setups Question - what is the easiest way of achieving this ? We would ideally like the new server to have the same name and IP address as the old one We have the option of upgrading the Windows 2000 server to 2003 first if that makes the transition easier Help ! TIA Mike

Changing Windows 2k3 PID and license key from MSDN to OEM
by Guest David B- 0 replies
Hi all, I've recently installed a new win2k3 box to run as an ISA server with a technet license (to test and deploy prior to deciding whether to keep it or not). After al the tests going well I'd like to change the licensing on the box from technet to our retail licenses. I have an OEM win 2k3 license I'd like to change it to. However since the PID is 296 (MSDN), it's not accepting the OEM license key. Any suggestions on how to change this? I also have to change the license on the ISA server software, any suggestions on doing that also appreciated. Thanks, David.

Windows SBS 2003
by Guest Michael- 3 replies
Hi, I have a Windows 2003 SBS which won't shut down properly! It goes through all the motions, stating Windows is shutting down, and then when it gets to the point that it would normally reboot / shut down (depending on what you requested), the central message about shutting down disappears and we are left with just the grey windows background. Any ideas? It was running SP1 up to a few days ago (it has had this problem for months), and installing SP2 has made no difference. Thanks, Michael

Server 2003 Keeps rebooting
by Guest TP- 1 reply

Good Afternoon, We had a Transformer failure and lost the power in the Building. DC has a generator and it kicked on as soon as the building lost the power. However One of the Windows 2003 server will not let us log on to the server. As soon we logon, it bring up the BOX to enter the reason server went down. Once we select the appropriate information and hit OK, The system gives us the Page Fault Error and reboot the server. Page_fault_in_Non-Paged_Area : 0x00000000 (0xD69C0000, 0X00000000, 0X8094A3B8, 0x000000000 ) and or 0x00000000 (0xD6540000, 0X00000000, 0X8094A3B8, 0x000000000 ) I can map the drive, I can look at the logs by connection through…

Web Site Mystery
by Guest TheScullster- 11 replies

Hi all Not sure this is the correct group but here goes........... Although we have our own corporate domain europacrown.com, we do not host our own web site at this location. Instead, our parent company hosts our site along with their own. So in our DNS setup, there is a pointer to the ip address of the host server. For some reason, attempts to access our company web site http://www.europacrown.com don't work from our corporate network. I have tried the same from a dial-up connection without any problems. Although it is not clear how long this has been an issue, we recently promoted our a SQL server to act as a domain controller and active directory …

by Guest Mark Bowles- 2 replies

I have a new client that currently has a 4 location network each with its own Windows 2000 server and each server acting as a domain controller. The server at the local location is the PDC and the exchange server running Exchange 2003. The project is to replace the local Windows 2000 Server / Exchange 2003 with a new server running 2003, Install the existing copy of Exchange 2003 and forklift the Exchange 2003 store to the new server. I have done this with SBS using swing and am thinking of about the same thing. What would you recommend. Thanks Mark

Service writing on Win2003 remotely.
by Guest Ricardo Vazquez- 5 replies

Hi everybody, MY PROBLEM: An application I've developed as a Windows Service, which is running at a Windows2000 (CORREO) has to move a file (MoveFileEx) to a Win2003 Server (ANDROMEDA), to a shared folder called "Recordings". --> None of them are a domain server (no active-directory) --> None of them are in any domain at all. Both of them are in a work-group called SSSHHHH. I add full control permision in Andromeda's folder "Recordings" for user "Ricardo", which I created in Andromeda; and also full permision for user "Everyone" (thanks to user "Everyone" my service has been working fine before Win2003). I have added this permisions in both tabs "Sharin…

Copy Large Files
by Guest ctowndu33- 12 replies

Brand new install of W2K3 on a 2 gb RAM, 3.2 Ghz processor. When we try and copy over large files (2Gb plus) the server does fine for about half the file and then the System process immediately goes from 15-20 percent to a solid 99. The server becomes ridiculously slow and the file copy goes from about 2 minutes to 200+. I'm out of ideas other than potentially hardware. I've replaced cables, tried different NIC, different ports on the switch. Is there something in the OS that could cause this thrashing? Thanks in advance!

When I run gpedit.msc and secpol.msc on a test lab Windows 2003 domain controller running IIS with a few group policies applied, the two tools give different answers for the value of Computer Configuration / Windows Settings / Security Settings / Local Policies / User Rights Assignment / Allow Log On Locally. gpedit.msc: Administrators, IUSR_Servername (note also shows the Group Policy icon next to the value rather that the local policy icon) secpol.msc: Administrators (note also shows the Group Policy icon next to the value rather that the local policy icon) rsop.msc: Administrators (indicates the active directory group policy that is applied that sets…

Processor Queue Length
by Guest BigSam- 0 replies

The processor Queue Length on one of my domain controllers varies from 5 to 15+. My monitoring service has a maximum setting of 7, meaning that everything above that vaule creates an alert for me to handle, but every time it occurs I don't see anything performance issues on the server. However, I don't know what is causing the queue length to get so large. Can someone tell me what to monitor, so that I can isolate the problem? Thanks

Windows 2003 ID Issues
by Guest D Riberdy- 3 replies

I am trying to connect from one server to another. When I type in the \\<servername> and hit enter, the server thinks about it for a while that then says: "<servername> is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network name cannot be found" This only happens with one particular local user. All other users can get challenged for authentication or it passes through if they are on the domain. I can ping, nslookup, etc the remote server but cannot connect to it using the method described above. Also, neither …
