Terminal Server/VPN Question
by Guest John W- 2 replies

We have some remote users that are connecting to our office via remote desktop/TS. On the TS machine there is a Client/Access application that uses a VPN connection to access another companies AS400. I'm having trouble getting the remote users connected through this VPN. If I sit at the TS machine the VPN will work fine. If I try the same thing through a RD connection it will not connect. Does TS not allow this or does anyone have a suggestion how to correct the problem? Thanks!

Hi! On a MS Windows Server 2003 SP2 (additional updates installed including update KB933360) I have a scheduled task that runs every day at 03:00. Last Sunday (2007-10-28), when the time switched from daylight saving to normal in my time zone, i.e. from Central European Summer Time (UTC+2) to Central European Time (UTC+1) the Windows Scheduler run the task twice: at 03:00 CEST and again at 03:00 CET. (It was a backup job. The Event Log and the backup log shows clearly that the task run twice.) In the properties of that task the Schedule tab has the following: Schedule Task: Daily Start time: 3:00 Schedule Task Daily - Every 1 day Advanced Schedule Opti…

New Drive Installed and Imaged- Now What?
by Guest dan- 0 replies
I'm in new territory for me and I'm stuck. I have installed a hardware RAID array in a Windows 2003 server and created/installed an image using Acronis True Image Server with Universal Recovery from the old IDE drive. Windows now sees the original drive with partitions C and D, and it sees the new array, which have corresponding partitions H and I, so I think the array is successfully installed and it looks like the image on the new drive array is correct. What exact steps do I need to take now to get Windows to boot from the H drive instead of the C? Thanks and hopefully this isn't too dumb a question.

Daylight Savings Time

I have a large AD Domain still at Windows 2000 Native, under conversion to Windows 2003 (adprep and forest prep done and Windows 2003 DC's - no sp1) and we patched last March for DST. If I do not apply the August 2007 cumulative patch, will my clocks roll properly on the first Sunday in November ? My understanding is that there are only four changes in foreign countries. The new patch requires SP 1 on Windows 2003. Thanks! Charlie

Hello, I have a Windows 2003 machine as my print server. I am able to install and share printers wthout a problem. All of my client computers can add the printers on the server by telling the print wizard specifically where to go but all but one doesn't show up when I try to add them by using the printer directory. I double checked that the "List in the directory" box is checked but still I get nothing.

We have made sub-folders for our pool cars in public folders and these can be seen through a link in our favourite folder. Before the name would be displayed as just the number plate for example the folder would be called xx-yy-01 (dutch number plate). We could display 5 car folders next to each other with out any problems but since about a week the names of the folders also include the the name public folder. Because the name is now so long it is not possible the five folders next to each other, for example:- The folder name is displayed now as "xx-yy-01 in public folder" To solve the problem we tried two switsches: /cleanview and / resetnavpane but it d…

ForeFront for little Domain

Hi, I couldn't find a newsgroup named "ForeFront". I want to implement ForeFront in a very little Domain. Since I am new to ForeFront I wonder, that during the hardware-test at the beginning of the installation I am asked to mount rather "heavy" hardware, to roll out ForeFront. How do I roll out ForeFront in a very small business? Is there a whitepaper or an url for such a scenario? Thanks for your hint. regards Patrick

Windows Server Hardware Cooling Question
by Guest Elliott Gaskill- 1 reply

Uh I know this may not be the right place to ask, but I have an office move coming up and I'm trying to determine the AC unit I need to get for the server room. The room is 11'2" x 9'0" x 9'0" for a total of roughly 905 cubic feet of space. All of the equipment should consume at absolute peak 9000watts. Now I just took the peak input wattage on all of the power supplies and UPS's and such and added them. I know that most likely the amount consumed will be less, but I don't know anything about that kind of stuff. If anyone can help me out with my problem, or direct me where to ask I'd be very appreciative. Thanks! -- Elliott Gaskill IT Direc…

Policy for Windows Media Player

Windows 2003 R2 Std SP2 Active Directory Windows XP Pro SP2, Media Player 9 Don't know if this is the right place to ask. If I'm in the wrong group, please let me know which group is more appropriate. I'd like to prevent Windows Media Player 9 (and later versions) from accessing the internet so users can't use the bandwidth to listen to internet radios, watch movie previews etc. Removing default gateway isn't an option because users must still be able to access the internet. Does anyone know how to accomplish this? Use GPO? Thanks much.

Hello, I'm getting a bunch these messages every two hours in my Windows 2003 application log. The servers in question do not have outbound internet access. Message: Failed auto update retrieval of third-party root list sequence number from: <http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3/static/trustedr/en/authrootseq.txt> with error: The specified server cannot perform the requested operation. What does this mean? How can I manually update this? We do not have Microsoft Updates enabled on the servers and use Shavlik to push our patches. Any help or insight would be appreciated.

XP Logon Authentication
by Guest ridicker2@gmail.com- 1 reply

I came to a branch location to install a new router, but while you're here... This question came up. (They claim) Suddenly in the middle of the day (of course the day of my arrival), when the user logged on after lunch that their Home directory (H:) failed to show up. Now I know XP stores like the last 10 successful login attempts and then if there is no DC to authenticate against, XP goes ahead and logs in, without notifying you. So I tried the usual reboot, check TCP setting, firewalls, etc. Finally, I decided to go ahead with a 'net use' command to locate the server. This came back successful and I could now map her H:. BUT, if I logged off the local sy…

Memory usage question Windows 2003...
by Guest Joe- 2 replies
I have a question around memory usage on Windows 2003. The server is Windows 2003 Server Enterprise with 4 GB RAM and a 2 GB SWAP file. If I look at Task Manager the total of all running processes is about 1.5 GB. On the Performance Tab PF Usage shows 3.5 GB Physical Memory Total is: 3931592 Available is: 1822916 System cache is: 227544 Now what I would expect is that the total of all running processes should add up to the difference of Total - Available which is 2108676. These don't add up. My issue is that I am seeing SWAP File usage of > 95% on occasion. Am I off base, or is there something I…

Estimating how much memory your server is consuming on average.. best way to do so?
by Guest markm75- 0 replies

We run server 2003.. x86, x64 versions.. What i frequently do is check the total used memory just after a boot is completely done... Often times as an example.. I find this value for instance: 1200mb used (out of say 2000mb)... Ill let the system run for days.. maybe 2 weeks later.. I check this value.. and it is at say.. 2400 out of 2000 (meaning its using the paging file)... An example of things on this server might be SQL 2000 instances (say 3 of them), Sharepoint, some other services, sourcesafe.. Does a rule of thumb of just doubling that initial startup used memory.. sound like a reasonable gauge for how much memory the system will need in …

by Guest zooeyhallne- 1 reply

Hi Everyone! I hope someone can give me some advice on an IIS issue that happened with a 2000 to 2003 server upgrade. I had several websites running on my 2000 server, and everything working fine. Then, I did an in-place upgrade to 2003 server (std) and now my websites will not work. The client brings up an http 500 error when it tries to go to the page, and the server logs an error: "Event ID 10004 DCOM got error Logon failure: unknown username or bad password and was unable to logn \IWAM_computername in order to run the server". I did some checking on this error, and confirmed that IWAM_computername has logon as batch job right in the local pro…

Hello, I developped an ASP.Net Web Site in C# language. It can save the Project Server URL, connect to Project Server and create a Project on it. I debugged it and ran it correctly from Visual Studio 2005. Then, I published it on the local IIS Server from Visual Studio 2005. But I wanted to run it with Internet Explorer. I had problems to open it. Therefore I used the same port as SharePoint. I can open it. But when I click on the Connexion button, I have an exception of Security. The message is described like that : The application tried to run an operation which isn’t allowed by the security. You must ask to your system Administrator or modify the l…
