Auto-Updates for production servers
by Guest Brian Kitt- 9 replies

Hello. I am a developer, and have been having an ongoing battle with our Network Admins, and would like advice here. They have Microsoft Windows Auto-Updates turned on for all production servers. This has caused numerous problems, because patches get applied, then cause servers to reboot, or other miscellaneous problems. I keep trying to tell them it is not a 'best practice' to have auto-updates on for production servers, but rather they should push them out with admin tools on a regular scheduled basis. They assure me they 'know what they are doing', and auto updates 'are required to prevent viruses and hackers'. They have assured me that Microsof…

Hi.. I have a I386 Windows 2003 R2 SP2 with ABE enabled for all shares, (and I have checked the properties of each share as well) The security permissions to the file are currently set to domain admins only, the share permission is domain users.. but ordinary domain users can still see the share.. (with access denied) I thought the shares were not suppose to be invisible to those without access? Any troubleshooting ideas would be appreciated Donna

user could shift folder despite having only read rights
by Guest inenewbl- 2 replies
Hi all. I have a user who could shift a folder from our fileserver to another location even though she has only read access rights(NTFS permission) to that folder. I have checked the user's effective permission and found that she has only read rights and traverse folder rights(assigned in special permission). I understand traverse folder rights only allow a user to go into folders which they do not have permissions without listing the contents. Hence why is my user able to shift a folder which she does not have anything more than read rights to it? Thks in advance.

When I remotely log on to a 2003SBS server and then via remote desktop to another server on that network running Server 2003 Standard I cannot use Manage Your Server nor mmc. I tried My Computer>rclick>Manage but doesn't work. Strange messages are popping out though, like "The application failed to initialize properly" or "Class not registered". Any ideas what can be the problem? yaro

Restore problem
by Guest LoneWolf- 9 replies
I have put up a new file server to replace the old one. After backing up the shares off the old one, when I go to do a restore, it runs for a few minutes, then stops and tells me it is out of disk space. There is over 300GB of free space on the drive. I have tried just backing up and restoring one share at a time, but the same thing happens. Most recent attempt: Backed up Operations share from old server to a file on new server. ~2.6GB Run restore to a folder on new server. Restore stops at 560MB and reports it is out of disk space. Disk has 337GB free. Any help is appreciated.

Service interaction with desktop
by Guest Henry- 0 replies

Hi, I have an application that can run as a service and places monitoring screens on the desktop. This service accesses document images stored on another server. When run under the local service account the service starts, the monitoring tools start on the desktop but it obviously cannot access the images on the network. When I use another account to start the service (an account with network access) the service does not initialize properly and the desktop monitoring tools do not start. This problem even occurs whether I use a domain admin account or local admin account. The accounts I have tried have the right to logon as a service granted to them …

Hello, As a test of our backups, I need to do a bare-metal restore of a Windows server using a full backup taken with NTbackup. Presuming that I'm restoring to a server with identical hardware and drive layout, can I do the following: - install Windows 2003 with the same service-pack level into a different Windows directory, e.g., c:\winrestore and into no domain; - run NTbackup and select to restore everything on all drives and the system state, with the option to restore over any existing files; - reboot the server after the restore completes. The server is just an application server in a domain; it's not a DC or anything like that. I'm thinking that…

notes.exe closes itself when launched from netlogon script
by Guest Kevin- 3 replies

Hi, I'm having some weird issue: I have to make lotus notes to start automatically from some netlogon .bat script. so I call c:\lotus\notes\notes.exe in my script, it'll do stuff and then will call nlnotes.exe and terminate itself; this is ok, but as soon as my netlogon script comes to its end, nlnotes.exe is terminated as well. what I've tried so far: call notepad.exe after notes.exe: lotus is "automatically" closed after I exit notepad call notes.exe from some vbs script: no changes notepad.exe seems to suspend the processing of the bat file until it's closed When i use the notepad.exe trick and check some things with "process explorer" i find t…

Major problem with WSUS
by Guest Gunnertac- 3 replies
I was out on vacation last week so NOBODY touched the WSUS server. It's my baby. Apparently MS came out with KB917013 on 10/23. This kb installs Windows Desktop Search 3.01. We did not have any pc in the company with Desktop Search installed when I left and virtually everybody has it now upon my return. Not only that, they also have a hotfix related to Desktop Search 3.01 (kb915800) installed as well. Of course, this bloody thing interferes with one of our custom databases so now I have to uninstall from every single pc. Two huge things came to light while searching for a smoking gun as to what went wrong. In WSUS, I found KB917013 in the update database …

Windows 2003 Server and TCP/IP printers
by Guest Baba O'Reilly- 5 replies

Within our enterprise print configuration, we have a number of HP printers which are connected via TCP/IP to the Windows 2003 server. A strange behaviour is being exhibited in that for some print jobs (PCL 5) they are being sent to print, the print completes, but the next job in the queue will print the banner page multiple times before continuing on with the job. Or, the job will stop part of the way through, then print the same banner over and over before continuing to print the entire job. I have asked HP about this, and they suggested throwing more memory at the printers. I did this, to no avail. The odd thing is that these printers are HP LaserJet 90…

Hi all, Sorry for such a basic question, but after an hour of sifting through Microsoft's website, I am no closer to an answer... I have a network win one win2k server, and 30 per user cals. There are no other servers on the network. In the near future, I will be adding a win2k3 server. My question is: can my existing 30 per user cals be used to access this new server, or do I need to purchase 30 new cals? Can you please point me to where the answer is documented on MS website? Thank you. Al

When will Microsoft fix up the issues with the Server 2003 administrative tools pack for vista? It works ok (after a lot of messing around) but there are so many UI problems, especially in AD users and computers. You can't tell the difference between users and computers, you can see if an account is disabled and the folders in the tree disappear when you click on them.. for the the admins out there still on XP and who rely on the administrative tools pack instead or remote connecting to your servers i would say stay with XP until this is resolved.

Adding Users
by Guest mcp6453- 1 reply

Our server is Windows Server 2003. The work stations are XP SP2. After we join a machine to the domain, we give the user administrative rights on the local machine. At least I think we do as I am confused. While logged into the domain as administrator, we open User Accounts (Start | Run "control userpasswords2") | Advanced | Advanced and add "Domain Users" to the Administrators group. My colleague tells me that's not the way to do it. He says he does not go into the Advanced panels. When the User Accounts window first opens, he clicks on Add... and then adds the individual user as an Administrator. This morning I looked at a computer that is similarly …

I'm thinking about re-install my server, but I would like some options or routes I could go down to make my life easier... I would like ideally to backup important information, users, priviledges, OU's, etc, etc. Then re-install the OS, and dump everything back and it would be like I've not touched it. (but obvsiouly I have) Hope someone can point me in the right direction.. Regards Paul.

Terminal Services 2003 SPLA token question
by Guest Stewart- 0 replies

I have posted to the Terminal Services subgroup, but need to get an answer as soon as possible to my question. I have set up Terminal Servers before, activated the license server, and installed TS CALs, but this is a new one for me. I have need for a server to be setup for clients and I have signed an SPLA license agreement with Microsoft. I have installed Windows and am ready to configure Terminal Server, but need to make sure my tokens will never expire since I will be paying for them on a monthly basis through my SPLA licensing program. I've configured the Windows Server to be Per User, and will be setting licensing as Per User with the Terminal Server L…
