Is it possible to map a shared drive and use a local machine's user account for authentication? I am trying to use the net use command (net use x: password /USER:\\remotecomputer\sharename). When I run the command I get an error stating the user context supplied is invalid. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Disable driver signing in Server 2008 RC0?
by Guest Kelly [MCSE]- 2 replies

Hey everyone...I've tried everything to disable driver signing in Server 2008 Enterprise RC0 x64 and cannot do it. I've used the bcdedit /set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS and I've used GPEdit.msc to disable driver signing in the Local GPO, but it still will not let the driver run. (It is for VMWare Server 1.0.4, which works find on Server 2003 x86) I suppose I could install the x86 version of Server 2008, and I'm sure it will run fine, but everything is going 64-bit anyways, and I'd like to head in that direction. I've read about the 'F8 solution' (pressing F8 on boot and disabling driver signing through there), but this server is remote and cannot b…

CPU usage monitoring
by Guest Paul- 0 replies

Do you know of a tool like QSlice that will display activity for each CPU or that you can choose which CPU it will display. I have a server with 16 CPUs and no services appear to be having an impact yet several times an hour at random one CPU (usually CPU 10, 11 or 12) will almost flatline for up to a minute which sets off our monitoring software.

Block dangerous file downloads from WAN to LAN..
by Guest gstar- 2 replies

Hi, I am sure this is not a new subject but I have to find a method to stop LAN users from downloading exe, vbs, cmd, bat files from the internet to our LAN. This is not possible on my hardware firewall unless the file is infected with a virus or malware and using the IE file download restrictions prevents them from downloading anything, even PDFs online. Is there not a method we could use to rstrict certain filetypes only and roll this out via GPO? So far I have used a GPO to disable file downloads, then added our intranet sites to the trsuted zones which is great but when users for example need to read PDFs from the web they are blocked. I am sure I'm…

Need help with disaster situation: I have an active directory with a single domain and 4 domain controllers. I have 2 sites (A and B) configured with 2 domain controllers in each site. All domain controllers have a copy of my DNS zone. All my clients have statically configured DNS servers 1 and 2 both on site A. Production computers have a GPO, setting their DNS servers to 3 and 4 both on site B. Last week I had a problem and the connection from production computers to site A was really slow. I had tested total lost of connection to site A, and clients correctly logon and work with site B, but with the lost of bandwith, clients were still trying to r…

windows server 2003 64 bit corrupte CDROM drivers
by Guest Philip Dawson- 0 replies

our windows server 2003 64 bit server seems to have lost its CDROM drivers, windows device manager has a yellow q mark over the devices (a DVD ROM and a DVD RW, both IDE) motherboard IDE drivers are ok. On following windows suggestion of uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers are copied but the error "drivers are corrupt or missing" follows. I disconnected the DVD RW but no joy with just the DVD ROM. Indesperation I installed an old Lite On CDROM, same error. There appear to be no updated drivers on microsofts or the manufacturers websites. I tried several of the generic signed CDROM drivers in the windows operating system with the same result. Our work…

Windows 2003 W32TM connection to Time Server problem
by Guest jon mateo- 3 replies

Hi, We have a domain controller that has a problem syncronizing to an external time server. I tried almost all the solution posted in this forum and to other forum in the Internet and still it does not work. I also tried to use the command w32tm /unregister and w32tm /register to reset all registry entries for w32time service but still it can't connect to the time server. I look at the firewall and the policy allows udp 123 to the time server and their are no logs coming from my DC on udp port 123 going to the time server. I used ethereal to captured the packet when I command w32tm /resync, but I could not see any udp 123 request going to my time se…

We are running windows 2003 shop. One user account is getting lock out every 5 minutes. I suspect some program is trying to log on to the network internally with the user name and password. I guess security log from DC will reveal the failed login attempt. But how can I trace to the source of this failed attampt?

SBS server 03 as a offsite DC in an enviroment
by Guest jason- 5 replies

Hi, I have an enviroment which has 2 DC's that are running very nicely and I have just put online an offsite subnet that has about 15 hosts. There is an install of SBS 03 there that I was hoping I could use as the onsite authentication point for the domain, is this possible to have SBS server act as a third DC in a domain governed by 2 Server 03 Ent R2 controllers? Will SBS be replicated to? thanks in advance. jason

!Newbie! Windows 2000/2003 security question
by Guest Kryten- 0 replies

Hi, I look after a range of application that run in both Win2000Server and WK3 Server (SP4+SP1 resp.) Have done succesfully for a a good few years now and thought that I knew my way around them quite well. These applications demand that the machine is not in a larger AD. They need to be standalone or in their own AD domain. Strange thing; when I look at security settings I see that, for example, their maximum password age is 42 days and password complexity is enabled...this shows as both configured and effective settings...yet I've never had to change a password or use a particularly complex password. It's like the "effective setting" is not actually …

Relocate 2003 server to new site
by Guest David- 2 replies

Hello All, Two of our 50 offices in the company are moving into one new office space. The two 2003 servers in these two offices are going to be moved into this new office. One of the server uses 192.168.10.0/255 subnet, and the other one uses 192.168.11.0/255 subnet. After moving into the new space, they will all be using 192.168.12.0/255 subnet. These two servers are both DCs, DHCPs, DNS servers in their current office. My questions are: 1). Do I need to disjoin these servers and rejoin them to domain again after moving into the new space? or I can simply move them into the new office and change their IPs, then they will be able to service clien…

Hello everybody, I found something that seems to be strange with the Run dialog in Windows XP or 2003 (and maybe others, but those are the versions I checked). I think you may find it interesting. If someone have an explanation please tell me/the others about it. Here it is: Try this: Go to Start --> Run. In the Run dialog box, type homeWhatever, where instead of "Whatever" you can type whatever you want, but don't use spaces between them. Your default browser will open, with some search result for this string. If such a web site exist, it will probably open. For example: typing homeMicrosoft opens the http://www.homemicrosoft.com/ w…
