WDS pxe boots
by Guest MrMako- 0 replies

I hope this is the best place to post this as I saw no WDS forum. I have a WDS server setup running on Win2k3 Sp2 and everything seems to be initialized. I can PXE boot a machine and it will show up in the pending devices windows. I had the system auto accept the client and it made an AD computer object, but the process was interrupted so we had to start over. Now for that machine only we get this error: PXE-E55: Proxy DHCP service did not reply to request on port 4011 All other machines we can PXE boot and they appear in pending, but then if we try a second time they fail. It is as if WDS records their MAC and will not let them PXE boot a second time. We…

Slow File Replication
by Guest gspotts- 2 replies

I have three servers in a replication group 1 windows 2003 R2 & 2 windows 2003 sp2. When a file is changed on thr R2 server it replicates immediately. When I change a file on the primary sp2 server it takes ages (up to 6 hours) to replicate. I have set the replication priority between these two servers to high but it has made no difference. I have also tried stoping & restaring the file replication service on each server. This has an initial effect then it reverts to 'normal'. It should be noted that the two servers in question are networked on a domain via a VPN. Any suggestions would be welcomed

Our new client is very interesting to have a Intra Web. They have't have a server before. Because of School Agreement Product Catalog (SBS is not available) theiywill have 2003 srv std and Exchange std. I'm not so familiar with 2003 std rather with 2003 SBS. Is there a Company Web in 2003 std? In SBS world there is a easy Wizard to implemen Companys Internal Web Site. If Companys Web is available also in 2003 srv std, how can I chnge it's language to Finnish rather than English? Thank You in advantage, Juha Rimmi Finland

Hi All, I'm having the following problem. We have two Exchange servers both are running W2K3 SP2 with Exchange 2003 SP2 and all hotfixes installed. The problem is that both have problems after a reboot. When the server is rebooted the RPC Services failed and all services depending on it will also fail (Netlogon etc.). Netdiag did not gave any error, no dns errors everything seems to be fine... After 5 min. i'm able to log on and start all services by hand without any problem. What to do / check ???? The first error recorded is the following: Event Type: Warning Event Source: LSASRV Event Category: SPNEGO (Negotiator) Event ID: 40960 Date: 23…

Really stopping Spoolsv.
by Guest Patrick- 2 replies

Lately we have had an issue with our 2k3 R2 file and print server. Users sometimes print something that cause the printer to hang. If I go into services and stop the printing spooler, it will show stopped. However the spoolsv.exe is still in memory. If I try to Kill that instance via kill and its PID, nothing happens the Service and PID stay in the processes tab. If I restart the printer service, a new spoolsv.exe instance with a new PID starts and the old one is still there as well. I cannot delete the offending spools files from the spool directory either, as the unkillable spoolsv.exe instance seems to have them locked. They only way I found to r…

Permissions to restart windows Service
by Guest Ken Beard- 0 replies

Here is my dilemma. I have a user to whom I do not want to give administration rights to a Windows Server 2003 Enterprise system. However, I need to give him permissions to stop, start, or restart a few, not all, services on the server. I found Subinacl which gives the permission but when the user attempts to see the service through MMC and Computer Management connecting to the server he gets "unable to open service control manager database on SERVERNAME." So I guess my question is, is there a way to allow a user to stop, start, and restart select services without having administrator role rights on the server? THANKS for all the help, -- Ken…

document ownership on Windows Server 2003
by Guest fec- 0 replies

We have a NAS with 2003 Server which has shared drive space on it. We also have other server which are not NAS with shared drive space. If we set both shares up identical with permissions we have a different result as far as document ownership. If we create a document as a user on the NAS (actually more than one NAS) in a share, the owner of the document is always the local administrator account. On the other servers it is the creator of the document which is what we want and has always been in the past. We need the creator of the document to be the owner. Any ideas why the local administrator account would always come up as the owner? I have …

File/folder security settings ?
by Guest Tony B- 0 replies

Is it possible in Windows2003 server folders to setup a folder and subfolders such that if any user who has r/w permissions in that folder tree creates a file, that the file is forced to have an owner that is say the admin account, and inherits read write permissions as per the top level folder ? I have a problem where I have a file repository in a folder tree, that is owned by an admin account, and has read write permissions for a group of users. When a remote user coming in via ssh adds a file to the folder, or modifies an existing file it takes ownership of the file it modifies and creates the new files as owner, and sets no read/write permissions for …

Convert Novell Netware DHCP to Windows 2003
by Guest AlanW.- 2 replies

Hello All, We are looking up upgrade our DHCP server from Netware to Windows 2003, keeping all scopes and addresses in tact. I'm having troubles finding a tool that would make this conversion for me. I refuse to believe that there are no tools available to convert Novell's Bind file to a format that can be easily imported into a Microsoft DHCP server. I've been Googling for a while now, and the most I've found was a few posts in these Google Groups that went unanswered. I'm hoping that I'll be lucky and find someone that has tried this, or at least heard of something that would work easier than recreating everything. Thanks in advance!!

I'm planning a disk swap for a production web server. My plan is to replace an existing 300 GB IDE (single) drive with 2x320 GB SATA-300 drives and my plan is to install one of the two SATA drives, convert both the existing drive and the first new drive to Dynamic Disks. Once complete I wish to shut down the server, remove the old 300 GB IDE drive, install the second new SATA drive, boot the server and create a dynamic disk mirror - leaving me with newer, faster mirrored drives. I have read in some places that this will work perfectly and in others, that my first mirrored drive (the first 320 GB SATA drive) will be assigned the wrong drive letter and that my ap…

If I am logged on to the server with the account configured in task it runs fine. If I change the username and password of the task and manually launch the task it does not run successfully. The accounts I am changing the task to are domain admins. Run when user is logged on is not checked. The task launches but does not complete. Getting the 0x1 return. The tasks is just creating a text file. Any thoughts?

Re: Can you find when someone logs in? Is there a way (or program) that will allow one to detemine who was logged on during a given date/time in the past? Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Shared Folders > Sessions gives you users currently logged in, and even duration for each user, but if the user has logged off, clock resets for that user. For example, we had a backup fail b/c, a user was logged in using the files that were being backed up. "Gus" wrote: > Get the PSTools from http://www.sysinternals.com. Home drive not always mapped correctly
by Guest Rocky- 2 replies

Hi, I've set up a new domain with server 2003 R2 SP2 as the domain controllers. Users home share path is in the format \\servername\users$\usershomefolder which is set to map to drive k: in the user's account properties. Randomly the K drive isn't mapped correctly. Instead K points to \\servername\users$ even though every setting is correct. If I log off and back on, the user's home drive is then correctly mapped to K: at \\servername\users$\usershomefolder. Does anyone know why this occurs ? John

Migration from NT4 to SBS 2003
by Guest PM- 2 replies
I have a client with the following situation: They currently have a Windows NT4 domain controller. 3 other servers are Windows Server 2003. Clients are all Windows XP. They purchased a server and SBS 2003. Our goal is to completely retire the NT4 domain controller. My question: What steps can we take to accomplish this? From my research, I do not believe that the SBS server will be able to join the NT4 domain. I do not want to create a new domain and worry about profile migration, etc. Are there steps to take to migrate the domain from NT4 to SBS 2003 without completely creating a new domain? If so, can someone point me in the right directio…

Perfmon: Can local, can't remotely
by Guest Tim Hollingworth- 0 replies

We are a member of the local admins group and no group policies or local security policies restrict running perfmon. We can add counters when logged on to the console but not when adding counters from a remote workstation or servers. We can open an MMC and manage the machine remotely. We can open a remote registry connection and run WMI scripts from a remote machine. Just can't add counters from a remote machine. We can run perfmon against all other machines on the network from any client but just not this one. When we type \\machinename and click an object or counter, it just hourglasses. Thoughts? WSUS & .NET updates
by Guest Freaky- 0 replies
Hey there, our WSUS server pushes .NET framework v3. This all is fine no problems. All recent computers however thus do not get the .NET v2 framework, I presume because v3 is backwards compatible. This on itself is no issue, but all recent computers now have an exclamation mark because they would be missing 2 updates. Both .NET v2 essential updates. The computers never tell us these updates need to be installed. I presume because there is no .NET v2 installed on it. Anyone know how to get rid of the erroneous exclamation marks? Thx

Hi all I'm currently looking for information on why you wouldn't want to use hibernation for shutting down a server. I have my own opinions and I'm wondering if Microsoft has any input as to why or why not you should do this on a server. I have looked on goggle and so far I don't see any blaring issues with doing hibernation. any comments or links to information would be greatly appreciated. Jason Hammond
