Any Documentation of Channel ID for Windows 2003 Server?
by Guest Will- 0 replies

This Microsoft knowledge base article 889713 partly explains how to determine which channel your installed Windows 2003 comes from: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/889713 Open Explorer and right click My Computer and select Properties. The Registered To section of the General tab contains a five digit number which identifies the general type of Windows you are using. The following three digits are the Channel ID, and that is what tells you whether the copy is Retail, Dell OEM, HP OEM, Retail, Generic OEM, MSDN, etc. Unfortunately, the above document does NOT define the Channel IDs!! As amazing as that oversight is (what is the point of the docume…

"external entity" on server 2003 sp2
by Guest Costin Gusa- 1 reply

Hi, I have a Windows Server 2003 SP2 install, member of a NT4 domain (yes, i know, don't ask! :) ) When I open local users and computers section of computer management I see some users listed as "External entity" Some "external entity"'s are certain known domain users (and they have corresponding profiles under 'c:\documents and settings\'), but there are two of them that are neither local or domain users and I'd like to find out more. The NT4 domain has only one BDC and has no trusts. I've tried searching for 'external entity' but these terms are too generic. Could someone point me to some documentation where I could understand where are these users comi…

Windows Server 2008 vs 2003?
by Guest Noozer- 2 replies

Is there a simple, straightforward list of differences betwen Server 2003 and Server 2008? I was hoping to run Windows Home Server, but it won't support my 2.5TB RAID5 array. We already have licenses for Windows Server 2003, so that's probably what we'll use, but we'd like to know what we're missing by not going to Server 2008. Example of what I'm looking for: 2003: IIS6 2008: IIS7, offering xxx and yyy that can be used for zzz ....not... 2003: IIS6 2008: IIS7

Hi, has anyone got this error before: Event ID 333 Source: Application pop up Type: Error An I/O operation initiated by the Registry failed unrecoverably. The Registry could not read in, or write out, or flush, one of the files that contain the system's image of the Registry. This is a Windows 2003 Enterprise 64 bit server with 16gb of memory. Dell say all the hardware is in good condition. The server has SQL 2005 on it too, but that's about it.

I'm looking to replace our Linux server with Windows Home Server and have a couple questions... 1) Is there a newsgroup for WHS? 2) Are there 32bit and 64bit versions? 3) Where can one purchase WHS? 4) I just read online about file corruption happening in WHS. Anyone know if Microsoft is close to having a fix for this? Thanks!

I would like to ask for comments and known problems on the indexing service with Windows Server 2003. I am trying to find resolution to a problem I am having with accessing files from the server. When my users open windows explorer or/and the search to locate files on the server there is about an 5 to 8 second pause before it connects and starts searching or displaying files. After the pause it seems fine. I would love it if I could gets results instantly when searching for files and even when clicking on a mapped network drive. Thank you, Tracey

File Server Migration Tool share name overlapping issue
by Guest study- 0 replies

Hello all, We have a mix of NT4/2003 File Servers that need to be migrated/consolidated to a single 2003 file server in an NT4 domain environment. The issue we've noticed is that because our current file servers all have \\servername\profiles$ share and thus, the sharename profiles$ overlap with one another so FSMT complains about it during the copy phase. ex) \\server1\profiles$, \\server2\profiles$, and \\server3\profiles$, when trying to copy the data using FSMT to the to-be new 2003 file server: to target share: e\profiles$ target location: e\profiles it errors out due to the overlap in share name. Is there a work around for this? We don't inte…

When I navigate to a folder with SQLServer 2005 data/log files using WinXP I can see the mdf and ldf files, but when connecting with Vista I can't see these files. How can I make these files visible under Vista? TIA, Martin.
