Complete registry search and replace based on a keyword.?
by Guest Chad Borsheim- 1 reply

Does anyone know how I can do a complete registry search and replace based on a keyword. We migrated to a new file and print server and in every workstation registry is the old file server name all over the place. I ideally would like to just replace the old server name "w2afpsys000" with the new name "w3sfp1" in the registry. Thanks Chad

Group Policies - Why are they empty?
by Guest KWME- 1 reply

I've got an XP Pro lab on a Server 2003 network. I'm using group policy to lock-down the lab and generally the system works well. Lately I've been having a problem - the policies that apply to users are not applying properly. When I do a rsop all the computer policies apply, but the user policies do not. I'm using loopback to apply the user policies to the computers but it doesn't seem that the loopback is applying. All the policies that are set to apply to user are denied and the reason given is that they are EMPTY. I look is sysvol and they are all there. What is going on?

KMS Query
by Guest TSAM- 0 replies

Hello all, What does KMS server use as the basis for identifying individual vista clients? Is it the MAC address on the client NIC, the processor ID, the motherboard ID, or something else or some combination? I have Windows 2003 KMS with DDNS enabled. All our clients are DHCP enabled and I am interested in how licensing will behave if we swap out a Vista PC, replace it with another one and later swap the original back in somewhere else. Thanks

corrupted NTFS
by Guest Jean-Philippe Vert- 4 replies

Hi all, first of all, sorry but English is not my first language. I have a SBS 2003 running for more than 1 year now without any particular problem. 2 weeks ago, I encountered some corrupted files on one of the partitions (425GB, 200GB used). The file system was so corrupted that chkdsk was aborting without any error message. Finally I reformated the partition and started to restore the files but the NTFS corruption was back (during the restore process). For testing purpose, I deleted the partition and splitted it in 2 (200GB and 225GB). I can copy or restore files without any problem on the first partition but on the second one I still have troub…

Hello I am having a problem with removing FTP access for one user. The scenario is as follows. We have a client that is set up with two FTP sites that are set up using IIS. The client has one administrator account that is associated with both FTP sites and would like to have this seperated out so they have one administrator account for each site (These administrator accounts are not full administrators, they are only accounts that have full control over the clients FTP sites). I have created the 2nd administrator account and assigned rights however I can not seem to remove rights from the 1st administrator account from the FTP site. I have tried removing t…

Domain Credential Caching

Hello, I have a Domain Credential Caching question and looking for help. The scenario is.. our company is taken over by another company and they want us to change all the Active Directory users to their standards. We have about 5000 of them and planning to rename it. There are about 400 users who connect via VPN and we tested it and works fine even after renaming it. But the BIG issue is these 400 users also use their "Domain Credential Caching" to logon to their laptop and connect to the network using VPN client. Of course the VPN client doesn't update their "Domain Credential Caching" to the renamed userid. What would be a good way to modi…

2k WINS and DHCP on NT domain?
by Guest flyersix- 1 reply

I have an old network still running NT for domain controllers. I am planning an upgrade this summer to 2k3. My question is can I move the WINS and DHCP services from one of my old NT servers to one of my 2k member servers? I am trying to get the old NT domain controllers to the point where all they are doing is user management. That will hopefully make it easier to remove them once this summers upgrade is done. Thanks for any help.

Hello Why is it that NT Backup restores directories but not files. All the directories are empty. I have had this on a few occasions at different sites I work at. I tried searching for an answer... not much found. I heard mention of incremental backups being problem, but am sure I haven't used that option anyway. Anyone one help please? Please dont answer if you dont know... rather not have the thread hijacked as sometimes happens :D Thanks.

Hi, We host websites using IIS 6 on server 2003. We'd like to test the server with DDoS attacks to see if it can handle web requests, and change the appropriate levels, etc. 1. How do I simulate a DDoS attack, are there any programs to do this? 2. What do I change in the registry to alter the DDoS prevention levels? thanks Chris

Can a spanned volume survive a server rebuild?
by Guest John Rotton- 4 replies

If I install Windows Server 2003 on a system disk (250 GB) and then create a spanned volume encompassing 3 seperate disks (just a spanned volume, not RAID0), will the spanned volume and the data it contains remain intact if for some reason I need to format the system disk and reinstall server again from scratch? Or will the spanned volume be unrecognizable to the newly rebuilt OS? Note...I realize that a spanned volume has no data redundancy and that a failure of any disk in the volume causes a total loss. That's not the gist of my question. (All the data on this volume will be 100% duplicated elsewhere.) I just want to know if an intact spanned volume…
