WindowsServer 2003 has stopped taking connections from outside our
by Guest Aaron Paulley- 3 replies

Hello. I'm in a bit of a bind that I cannot figure out. Around 12:30 today our Windows Server 2003 stopped receiving email (POP3) server. Internal mail worked fine, we could send emails around the office (most of the time), but all mail coming in from the outside stopped. Long story short, I have been able to determine that ALL connections from anywhere outside our own network are timing out or being refused, on all ports -- http, smtp, pop3, ftp, telnet, etc... All timeout or are refused. I changed NOTHING on the server. I wasn't even near the server when this started and hadn't even logged into it for several days. I cannot figure out why all incom…

Software Escrow Licensing Query
by Guest Chris M- 0 replies
Hello all, The company I'm working for is currently looking into sorting out a software escrow service for our clients. We host a bespoke application that uses IIS to host the front end, MS SQL Server as the backend and some business logic in between. What we would like to do is provide the escrow company with a pre-built platform that our clients would be entitled to, that could host their data in the event that our company goes under. We were thinking that we could do this by supplying the escrow company with a set of virtual machines for this purpose, which they would then keep in storage. My question is - what implications does this have with r…

I have a couple of corrupted Roaming User Profiles. I know I can delete these and redo the user and the roaming properties. However, I also have Exchange 2003 running, which authenticates against the AD. What happens if I delete and re-do the user profile, without deleting/purging the mailbox? Thx

RAID "hardware vs Software"
by Guest David Griffiths- 3 replies
Hi All Our server is equiped with Hardware 3 hardware raid mirrors, we had a problem a few weeks back when we had a raid card failure. Had it just been a drive life would have been easy, After I replaced the card the problems came as I needed to recreate the mirror and that would kill the data on the drives. I'm past the problem now but my question is: What do the experts recommend for a raid setup. Hardware or Software using Windows server software....? Thanks in advance Dave

Question on Robocopy
by Guest DT- 4 replies
Guys, I might be having a blonde moment but I recall in the past (have not used it for a few years) that Robocopy had the ability to mirror two folders, and update files based on the file dates in the two folders. That is, if for instance, we are sync'ing folder A and folder B and the file existed in both then the older of the two would be replaced. However I have setup the following: robocopy.exe \\server1\share\folder1 \\server2\share\folder2 /MIR This deletes anything on server2 that does not exist on server1 So I tried this: robocopy.exe \\server1\share\folder1 \\server2\share\folder2 /MIR /XX /LOG+:sync2nth.txt This does not delete a…

large page support and numproc option
by Guest Chen Yang- 0 replies
hi, All: I'm using Windows Server 2003 R2, patched with the latest SP2. But I'm meeting problems with the option of numproc=N in boot.ini, after specifying the option, Windows cannot provide the large page support in running applications. If I don't specify the option, I can use large page successfully. (I have enabled my account in the local security policy by assigning the my accout in "lock pages in memory".) Is it expected or problems of current Windows Server 2003 R2? It exists in SP1. Would some one shine some lights on this issue? Thanks. -- Chen

Can't browse server shares
by Guest LincolnIT- 10 replies
We have about 6 Windows XP machines that suddenly cannot browse the server shares on the DC. These computers are not running the login scripts from the server automatically and I think this is why. Other XP machines are not having this issue. If you try to browse to the server using its ip address the shares do appear. I've tried the following with no success: -using a host file with the servername and ip address -enabling netbios over ip -ipconfig /flushdns

Hi, I have one printer shared from Windows 2003 server. I would like to restrict certain users from being able to go in change the printing preferences to print in color. I have the everyone group in the security tab of the printer and it has only print checked off not manage documents or manage printers. When logging in as a user i can modify the printing preferences to whatever I want. I thought this would be greyed for users unless they had rights above just print. What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance.

All of our XP, 2000 and Mac Computers are working fine. Roaming Profile Take Ownership problem
by Guest UselessUser- 3 replies
Hi all, We have roaming profiles stored on a 2003 server, the group policy to automatically create profiles with Administrator Full Control is NOT set. I needed to delete some files from a user's profile, so I went into the folder and took ownership so I could see the folder and added my permissions full control. I then deleted the files I needed to, and gave ownership back to the user, set their permissions to full control, and finally removed my permissions from the folder... Everything appeared to be back to normal, however the user is getting an access denied error when they attempt to login... The only way I have been able to get around this i…

Installing RIS on Windows Server 2003
by Guest justin2312@gmail.com- 1 reply

I have posted this on a SBS forum, but I thought I'd give it a shot on the general Wndows 2003 one. I've read a few how-to docs on installing Remote Installation Service (RIS) on Windows Server 2003; they all seem to say go to Add/Remove Programs> Windows Components and select "Remote Installation Service". I looked on my server, however, and the option isn't listed there at all. I'm sure the server is Windows Server 2003 SP1, is there any reason why the feature would be absent?
