Adminpak on Vistax64
by Guest Kentucky- 6 replies

Hi, I have installed the Server 2003 version of the Adminpak on Windows Vista 64-bit business edition and have noticed the following two problems: 1. In the MMC console I cannot add the administrative snap-ins such as ADUC, DHCP etc., just the standard snap-ins are available. However I can access these through administrative tools. 2. When I open the DHCP console I cannot see the leases or scope options, only the server options are visible. And yes, scopes have already been set up on the servers I am viewing. Is there a patch or updated Adminpak available which can fix these problems.

COM+

Does anyone know what the default permissions needed to be able to shutdown com+ applications necessary? I don't want the user to have to be local admins on the servers, but I can't figure out the necessary permissions so I don't have to make them admins on the box. Thanks.

Scheduled Tasks not running correctly in Win2k3
by Guest BenDVaughn- 1 reply

My scheduled tasks aren't running when the task's assigned user (admin level) is logged out despite the fact the "Run only when logged in" option is not selected. If I manually run the task it works correctly, being logged in as the same user that the tasks should be running under. Also, if I am logged in at the time the scheduled tasks will run themselves correctly automatically. There are older tasks that continue to work properly but they use the same permissions as the ones that aren't which doesn't make much sense to me. It's a simple copy procedure and at first I was using NTBackup but when it didn't work I thought I might simplify it by making a…

Is there any way to automatically ftp files from C:\blah (which contains child folders as well) to a remote ftp server? I want to set something up where I can have a scheduler at some interval, monitor a local folder, and this remote ftp folder, and sync changes between the two.

Storing a member server
by Guest Danny- 2 replies

Hello, Once or twice a year I have the need arise to set up a remote office for a short period of time. I have a server that I use as a GC for that site but it is dedicated to that job. After the remote site is taken down, I then need to store the server for the next 6 months to a year until it is needed again. I already demote the machine from the DC role before storing it but I am wording if I should also remove it from the domain as well. I am concerned about any domain SIDs or other domain values expiring when the computer does not get turned on for such a long period of time. The server also acts as a print server during this time so i would like to …

Windows Server 2003 R2 CALs vs SQL Server 2005 CALS
by Guest FS John- 1 reply

Hi there, I am a bit confused about Microsoft CALs... My company has 10 client and uses an own application (developed in Visual Studio 2005 that access to a SQL Server database using ADO.NET) installed on each machine. I have a new Windows Server 2003 R2 that comes with 5 client CALs. I need to install SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition and (here I am sure) I need to buy 10 CALs one for each user/machine (1 user use 1 machine) My question is: Do I need to buy 5 more CALs for Windows Server 2003 (I will use the server ONLY to host SQL Server 2005, I will not use the server as Domain Controller, the network is a workgroup model)?

Inventory Management
by Guest Sam- 0 replies

Does Microsoft offer a product such as Belarc to perfom an inventory (both software and hardware) on pc's on the network? I do not know much about SMS but I feel that may be a bit of overkill for what I need. I just want to be able to create a report of machines that have outdated versions of software (Firefox, microsoft patches, Office, etc) and also various hardware devices. I do not need to push out software at this time.

Adding unallocated space options
by Guest Matthew Kyle- 0 replies

Hello- I have a HP ML350 server with a RAID 5 array (3 hard drives). I recently added a 4th hard drive to the array have completed the expansion. When the server was setup, we created 4 partitions. A system partition (C: drive), a pagefile partition, a "current" data partition, and a "historical" data partition, in that order. I now have and additional 136GB of unallocated space that I want to add to the "current" data partition. How do I go about this since the unallocated space is not contiguous to the partition I want to add it to? The array is setup as a BASIC disk. Should I convert it to a DYNAMIC disk and then use the diskpart utility to ad…

Excel TMP files on Windows Server 2003 R2 NTFS volume cannot bedeleted
by Guest Hotzenwalder- 0 replies

We're having problems with certain file types on our Windows 2003 R2 volumes that once created cannot be deleted anymore in any way. Such is the case with lots of Excel TMP files. Here are the symptoms. File is existing on disk (for example: test.TMP)\ When viewing the properties of the file you can see the information about the time of creation, when it was last modified etc, but the tabs for VERSION, COMPATIBILITY, SUMMARY and most important SECURITY are missing. This is strange since the file is located on a NTFS volume and the user who want to view this information has FULL CONTROL on the file. When trying to delete the file we get a message that the a…

What are Windows registry? Why are they so important for your operating system? What can you do to keep them reliable? According to Microsoft site, registry are "a central hierarchical database used in Microsoft Windows ... to store information necessary to configure the system for one or more users, applications and hardware devices." You can add to that data regarding file types like what application is used to open them, what icons should be display for them and so on. I will try to explain what's happening on 2 of the most common scenarios that take place on your computer: 1. You get a new program (software or game). You want to give it a try, so you instal…

Suggestions needed for failing client mapped drives across VPN tunnel
by Guest bertcastrosf- 0 replies
Windows 2003 Domain, Single Forest, main office and one branch office connected over the Internet via VPN using Cisco equipment and Internet access is Partial T1 at both locations. Main office has one Windows 2003 Server PDC; Branch Office has one Windows 2003 Server BDC and is bridgehead server for the Branch Office subnet. All clients to remote server mapped drive attempts fail, however all server-to-server mapped drives work just fine. Attempts to change the MTU on the client side to as low as 1200 have not seemed to fix. Are we missing something here? On each Client PC, would adding static route to the other subnet PDC or BDC help? Any suggestion…
