How to install Exchange Server 2007 on Windows Server 2003
by Guest Barry- 1 reply

Hi, We have a Windows Server 2003 system (x32) on which I need to install Exchange Server 2007. Am I right in assuming that this can only be installed on the x64 version of Server 2003? If that's correct, do I need to do a clean install of Server 2003 x64 on the machine or is it possible to convert the existing installation to the 64 bit version? (the processors are 64 bit Xeons in a Dell 1850, if that makes any difference). Regards + TIA, Barry.

Hello -built a fresh server with 2003 STD/R2/SP2, + all current updates, including .NET framework 3.0. When I try to install IE7, a message pops up that this version of IE is not compatible with this system. I do have 3.0 installed on XP workstations with IE7, but 3.0 installation is only successful if IE7 is already installed on the XP machines. Anyone else seen this issue?

If I look at my servers Hard Disk Drive size under "My Computer" it lists both my C: and D: drives as 1 gig, which is incorrect. If I goto "Disk Manager", its lists the correct size of my drives. (180 GB) There is currently more than a 1 gig on both the C: and D: partitions. Not sure when or how this happened.

Windows Server 2003 R2 activation issue
by Guest Wade Guidry- 0 replies

I've got a W2K3 R2 Standard server on which license activation occasionally "breaks", and reactivation is necessary. It has happened a few times that the server becomes unavailable (users can't log in), and I have to re-activate the server. The specific event id's that appear in the applciation log are 1000, followed by 1011. When this error occurs, I have no difficulty re-activating the server online, via the activation wizard. Any thoughts on why this occurs, or possible solutions? Event ID 1000 An error occurred while the wizard was checking the current Windows product license. Error Code: 0x80040507 Followed by: Event ID 1011 You…

After the install I rebooted and now the server can't get to Windows update or any other website. I can still remote desktop to the server and i've tried installing IE7 x64 edition but to no avail. DNS is working but when i try to go to a website there is a syn_sent message listed in 'netstat - a' but never a reply. The windows firewall service isn't on and i've run out of things to check. If you have any ideas please let me know.

Server time changes when user logs on
by Guest James Knueven- 1 reply

I am having trouble keeping the time in sync on a few of my Windows 2003 Servers. I am syncing with an external device via a 3rd party tool (Tardis) and I have the Windows time service stopped and disabled. Whenever an admin logs on to the server (normally via RDP) the time one the server changes resulting in a problem with the application running on the server. There are no entries in any of the event logs related to the changing of the time. Any help on why this is happening and how to correct it is appreciated.

Question about admin rights
by Guest Mally P- 3 replies

Hi All, I work for a support company who provides support for a customer who have offices all over the world. There are no problems with this, the infrastructure works great. However, we only administer the UK branches as the states generally look after everything else. As part of some auditing taking place, they only want admin rights granted to select users, and the account assigned to us is not one of them unless we can prove that we specifically need them. Really all we ever need to do is administer those UK servers and services (DNS, DHCP etc) and not the forest, in which case what rights could we get away with using to do these tasks? Can we use a…

Reset Recovery console password
by Guest Jeff- 11 replies

Hello everyone, I'm trying to reset the password for just the recovery console of an application server. This server is on an Active Directory network but is not a domain controller and is a 2003 SP2 server. I found articles/info about setting the Directory Services Restore password, but nothing on resetting the local administrator password. The local admin listed on the machine in Local Users and Groupds is the domain administrator account, but not the local administrator. I had an issue with a corrupted system file or registry hive and wasn't able to log on to the recovery console using the domain admin password or the old local admin password t…

troubleshooting performance monitor counters
by Guest Scott W- 0 replies
I am trying to use Performance Monitor on my Exchange Server. Initially, ALL of the objects and counters were NUMBERS - and these numbers meant nothing to me. Using KB article 152513 I was able to find that the Perflib key was missing a very important sub-key and data. I have restored this key and am now getting the standard counters. The non-standard counters are still just listed as numbers and I have not had any luck troubleshooting this problem. Does anyone have any additional information - HELP!! Thanks.

Hi all, I have an issue adding a W2K3 server to the domain. Well kind of ... I can add the server fine and after the reboot I can authenticate as a domain admin. However it doesn't create an AD Computer account within the directory schema and if I go to add a domain user to the local admin group it doesn't recognise the domain. Thanks

split implementation of dns
by Guest Vishal- 0 replies

Hi, We have got a split dns implementation on windows 2003. I have created a www record pointing to the IP address of the domain (A Record) I have done as suggested so that we are able to browse the domain without appending the www. hence To create a host record that allows going to the domain without using www or ftp or anything else you just add a new host for that domain that has nothing in the Name field so that it uses the parent domain. Add the IP address and check if you want it to update a PTR record and click Add Host. However, I get the following error: The associated pointer (PTR) record cannot be created, probably because th…

SBS 2003 & NT 4.0; sharing between

I have a existing NT 4.0 domain and will be installing a SBS 2003 R2. Not sure if I will create a new forest or use the Active Migration v3 tool. My question, can you share resources between a NT domain and a separate SBS 2003 forest? I know that trusts are not allowed between the two systems.

VPN Problems

Hello, Sorry to have to ask but I wonder if someone can help. I am trying to connect to a Windows Server 2003 via either Windows XP Home or Windows 2000 Professional. I have configured the client with PPTP. I can connect to the server ok and using the \\server command can view all of the servers resources. What I cannot do is to login to the roaming profile and all I get is the local profile. I have made the changes as suggested by Microsoft regarding potential slow connections but to no avail. I have also tried logging in using the Windows 2000 Professional "Login using Dial up" but again, it only shows the local profile. How do I login to m…

Printmig problem
by Guest sarahseftel@gmail.com- 0 replies
- 204 views
Hi, I'm using the printmig (3.1) application in order to backup all of the printers in our printer cluster. The backup takes place every week with a script. In the pm.log of the printmig I see "2007:10:06 17:00:41 243 print queues enumerated", which are the exact number of printers that we have. I took the CAB file and used the restore option in the lab, in the pm.log I see "2007:10:08 15:29:01 172 print queues enumerated", so basically I have 71 printers missing... The printer cluster name in the lab is different than the one in the production environment, but as far as I know it does not matter since the printmig application is for migrations of this…

Branch Office Application

I have a new custom app that will rolling out soon and have a question regarding the best way to offer up the software. We have 8 sites total (corporate and 7 remote offices). None cuurently have servers installed at their locations. What is the best way (not necessarily cost effective but best performance way) to accomplish this? Example: install a server at each location along with the application and replicate the data at predetermined intervals? The custom app is written in .NET, VB, and backended by SQL 2005. All workstations are Win XP Pro. All locations are connected to corporate via dedicated PTP T1's with all Cisco hardware. I have read a lot of s…

Reset Drive Mappings via Registry
by Guest Bob Simon- 3 replies

I work for a school. They really need an MCSE but they're stuck with my very limited knowledge of Windows Server. I was given local admin rights to all the desktops and three old servers, but have no rights to the domain controller run by the new school system. During the summer, the school cut over from another domain, which I also have no rights to. The transition has been miserable. We are on two separate physical networks (different switches) running separate domains, and there is an outlying building which still has no access to the domain or Internet. Teachers, students, and staff have generic logins. Two applications, STI and Plato run on one of t…

I have a single enterprise file server where all my users map to \\servername\share which uses the N: drive, within the N: drive I have folder based on divisions such as Finance, Marketing, Information Technology, QA, Programming and others. Each folder is controlled by NTFS permissions based on AD Groups. Everyone maps to this share but can only access the folders they have permissions, but for example Marketing users can still see the Root folders such as Finance and IT folders, they cannot access it them, but can see them. I'm trying to find a way to have folder being hidden or in another words, only you can see the folders you have permissions to and n…
