Restore from older backup is not overwriting registry
by Guest FUBARinSFO- 4 replies

Hi: I'm trying to roll back my Windows 2003 Server C:\ drive to an earlier configuration, before the registry got contaminated and mangled. But restoring the full .bkf, specifying overwite files, does not seem to be overwriting the system registry files (among other files). There's some trace in the .log report of access denied with SxS file manifests, but nothing about failure to overwrite the registry files themselves. I've unchecked "preserve existing volume mount points" and specied always overwrite. I must be missing something pretty basic here. Is this an illegal operation under Windows 2003 Server? I would have done it from either the Recovery C…

Setting up virtual printers on Win2K3
by Guest The Doctor- 0 replies

I love support!! Quick question about setting up virtual printer. what are you saying you ask? The scenario is this: There is a Win2K3 server colocation. There will be no printers attached. The user comes in remotely and works on what is needed. The printer that are needed are HJ Laserjet 1018 and a Xerox WorkCentre M20i . One of my MS certifed friend gave me this advise: use IIS on the Windows Server to make a printer available to remote client computers. To do this you need to do the following: 1) open control panel on the Windows Server. 2) open Add/Remove Programs 3) open Add/Remove Windows components (left side of screen option…

how to migrate domain and its users?
by Guest gonzo- 1 reply

hello, I was given a HP laptop in my work with Windows XP preinstalled. the problem is that the system is equipped with all bells and whistles, consumes a lot of resources and works slower than it could. Of course, I am not allowed to delete the preinstalled os, which is standardized for a company, but I am allowed to resize the original partition and make another bootable one. this is what I plan to do. but one thing bothers me: is there a way to migrate existing domain and its users, so that I could log in to domain on new environment? frankly speaking I know nothing about domain logons -- where should I start reading? could you point me to some tuto…

by Guest Luca Minudel- 3 replies

Hi all, my windows system is installed in C:\ and in C:\ there are also other data files (say db data files, documents, pictures and so on). Non I'm doing an ASR backup every time I made some changes to the system (say an istallation of a patch, a new driver, a new devices, a new program, etc.) unfortunally the ASR backup wizard do select also the data files, this make the ASR backup very time consuming because the data files. Note that I do already buck up all data files periodically in incremental mode so the ASR do buckup them twice. how can I exclude the data files prom the ASR? TIA, Luca Minudel

Can I use DFS to copy files / shares?
by Guest Sandy Wood- 3 replies

We're in the process of relocating some big user and group share directories. We want to move them from one logical drive to another one, on the same server. I thought that maybe DFS could be a help in this move. It seemed that we could, say, setup a DFS root with a namespace of UsersHome. Could we specify two locations, say H:\users and J:\users and then let DFS replicate everything from H: to J: ? Would this work? -- Sandy Wood Orange County District Attorney

by Guest milleron- 1 reply

The Windows Home Server group has a forum. It takes me HOURS to accomplish on their damned forum what I could do in minutes via Usenet. I've looked, but I don't see any other groups that are displaying posts about WHS. Has anyone here noticed if there's any Usenet group that's appropriate for this topic? Ron

Windows 2003 Certificate Authority Question
by Guest Andy H- 0 replies
Hi I have setup a Windows 2003 Enterprise Certificate Authority, this is installed on one of two domain controllers. Although there is an Active Directory domain, the is going to be no AD integration, no auto enrolment and the user accounts will not be stored in the active directory that the certificates will be used for. I have setup the Certificate Authority and IIS to publish the CRL on the same AD server, if this server falls over though we loose the CRL. Is there a way I can publish the same CRL across two servers using IIS? Or can you integrate the Certificate Authority to share the CRL with Active Directory across the two domain controller…

The problem deleting certain files, to be more exact Microsoft Access *.ldb files are the biggest culprit. I‘ve also had some trouble renaming / deleting Microsoft Excel files. Both servers are running Windows 2003 server standard 32bit with SP2 installed. Troubleshooting Steps 1) Tried using the windows command line tool openfiles.exe to locate any open file-handles. 2) Tried using the Sysinternals Handles v3.…

Re: Remote Desktop to Win2k3 SBS freezes/pauses when moving mouse Sorry for the delay. I have tested all the possibilities, it appears this only happens when connecting to this server via a Windows Vista desktop. If I connect to the server via a Windows XP Virtual Machine (VMware) it runs fine. I am connected to 3 other SBS 2003 servers and do not have this issue, it appears to be Windows Vista to this one particular Windows 2003 SBS server. Just to clarify: If I open the remote desktop System Manager opens full screen, if I click the minimize button with the mouse, the button is highlighted but nothing happens, after about 6 seconds the windows…
