Recovering Overwritten Files
by Guest Roman B.- 3 replies

I have a windows 2003 server. One of the files on a shared volume was "overwritten" with another file with the same name. Is there any way to recover the original overwritten file. I found some info about SHADOW VOLUME COPY but it does not appear to be enabled on the server. I have found many programs for recovering deleted files but nothing for recovering overwritten files. Anyone know of third party solutions Any help is much appreciated. Thanks Roman

Problem with Favourites.
by Guest Kardon Coupé- 2 replies

I'm having a problem with favourites.... A user re-arranges their favourties to how they want them, and then they log off and back on, the original favs layout if pulled from the server and the one they've sorted out, now having two copies of some links.... I was under the impression that when logging off, things like the favourties are copied back to the server profile store? or could it be because the server is busy doing something then the user is logging off and just can't handle the requests? Rename Folder in All Mailboxes in Exchange 2003
by Guest Jeff Dale- 1 reply

We recently installed Symantec Mail Security for exchange and in the process it asks us to make a folder for Spam messages in all the users mailboxes. In our brilliant minds we spelt the work Symantec incorrectly, Now all our mailboxes have the word "Synmatec Spam" in them. I know you can use Exmerge to do this but for some reason this just won't work. I have a more recent version of ExMerge as per MSKB 842227 and have followed the steps in an article showing you how to rename folders from a different language but that doesn't seem to work. Any ideas? Thanks

Question about VSS update-2 KB 887827
by Guest patrick burgess- 1 reply
Hello all, I have a question concerning the hotfix mentioned in KB 887827, VSS Update2. I called MS support to obtain this hotfix and was sent the Itanium 64 version of the file. I mentioned that the file name looked like it was for Itanium and support rep answered that it was only 64bit version available. Looking at the file information section of the KB article under 64 bit version, the platform that is listed is IA-64. I know I'm reading it - but is this right? Is there no x64 version of the file? Thanks, -- Patrick Burgess

I'm trying to install the default HP PCL5 or PCL6 print drivers on Windows 2003 64 bit. I have set group policy to allow users to install printers (doubt I need that one) and also I have disabled the option that would prevent the installation of a printer using kernel mode drivers. I did a gpupdate /force and confirmed that settings with rsop.msc. I still cannot get the printer driver to install. The files are copies over then I get a modal error from Windows 2003 complaining that I have a group policy setting that prevents kernel mode driver installation. The setting I disabled is: Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Printers…

Unable to telnet to port 139 and 445
by Guest Donny- 3 replies

I'm unable to telnet to the filesharing ports 139 and 445 on my windows 2003 server. If I logon locally onto the server and telnet to that port, I'm still unable to. Netstat -an also doesn't show that it's open. I tried to enable Netbios of TCP/IP on the network settings but was still unable to telnet to the ports. Is there a service which I have to start manually or something which I have to install? What needs to be done for these ports to be open on the server?

by Guest jeffuk123- 5 replies

Hello to all. Basically, I have a client who has Windows Server 2003 installed and Exchange 2003. Today the client informed me she attempted to upgrade a database called CASETRACK on the server, as the data is on the server and has been working fine. She apparently has tested it on a workstation and it run fine. She called to say that they cannot get any emails. I managed to log in to the server remotely and cannot access any of the administrative tools. The error keeps saying "cannot access c:windows\system32\xxx.msc" (where xxxx is the name of the mmc) There is now no 'run' option from the start menu. I cannot open server management. Exchan…

What's the differance?
by Guest Scooter- 0 replies

An associate is working on a migration and discovered something very interesting. He is mapped to a windows 2000 server share via drive letter, selected all root folders and files and selected properties resulting count of 166,835 files, 16,966 folders & 138,638,502,928 bytes. There is also a UNC path to the same share however this shows 166,753 files, 16,962 folders & 139,627,745,804 bytes. With windows explorer configured to view all regular, system & hidden files, I hope someone can explain why there is a difference of 82 files, 4 folders and 989,242,876 bytes. Thanks

by Guest Jon- 8 replies

I have just finished installing Windows Server 2003 Enterprise R2 on a DL580. I had no problems getting to the internet with the native IE6 installed. I installed SP2 and could no longer get to the internet. I uninstalled the SP and was again able to get to the internet. I installed all of the security updates except for the SP and everything was fine. I installed IE7 and could still get to the internet. I again installed SP2 and cannot get to the internet anymore. I know someone must have experienced this but I cannot find anything on it out on the interent. Any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks - Jon

I am trying to install Windows 2003 R2 for the first time in our office. I want to use DHCP as I want to automatically assign IPs to my clients. For that I have installed the OS and I have done the following in the order mentioned:- 1. Installed active directory (command dcpromo). With the directory name LINDSAY.LOCAL. Gave an error at DNS which I said I will install later. 2. Installed DHCP and defined the scope (172.16.39.11 to 172.16.39.61) 3. Installed DNS with the default settings. Assigned the fixed IP 172.16.39.1 to the server itself subnet 255.255.255.0. Gateway is the one of my router 172.16.39.3. Preferred DNS 127.0.0.1. Now when I am trying to c…

Windows Server 2003 fresh install with Dell Install CD
by Guest Terry Caleb- 0 replies

I installed a new server with the Dell installation CD, and used my Windows Server 2003 standard CD, and when it came to system drive size, I told it to be a 20GB NTFS partition. After the install, the server comes up, and My Computer shows only a 5 GB partition, which is almost full after installing SP2, and if you use Disk Manager, it shows up there as the 20GB as I told it to. What do I need to do for the OS to see the rest of the space? I already converted the disk to dynamic.

Update.exe hangs
by Guest MooseWizard- 1 reply
Server 2003, no SP. AD No Specific Event Log entries No Application errors, they just hang. After an in-place upgrade on a DC from 2000 to 2003, no installs that use update.exe will run. I tried installing SP2, but it hangs at Inspecting Computer. I tried running windows update, but it hangs at "Checking for the latest updates for your computer." Another strange symptom is that there are no shortcuts to Active Directory components in the Administrator Tools menu. However, I can get to them by launching MMC, then adding the AD snap-ins. All accounts are present, and all services seem to be running correctly. I just cannot install anything! There is a…

Hi, I have a new windows 2003( r2 sp2) domain called engineering.lan. It consists of 1 domain controller and one member server named prodserver which is the member of the new domain. Prodserver has the file server role with all the company's shares on it. All desktop computers are on the domain and can access resources on prodserver. The problem is that we have notebooks which are in a workgroup called engineering. Notebook users have the same account name and password as that of their domain account however they are prompted to enter their credentials every time they try to access a share on prodserver. I have double checked that the notebook …

I tried what I considered to be a routine upgrade on a 2003 std server w/sp2 to 2003 r2. The response was that the current installation version is newer than the 2003 r2. Is there a possibility to upgrade or is this a migration issue? thx jerry c
