Best practice for backing up
by Guest stjoe5373@news.postalias- 2 replies

Hi, I know this isn't "Windows" specific but I'm just looking for the best practice for backing data up. I'm only backing data, and system data, not the whole OS. I have multiple customers ranging from needing to backup 20MB of data to one that is requiring about 120GB of data. I for the most part use external hard drives with USB 2.0 and rotate the drives every few days. Is there something "better" (better being relative) out there that I'm over looking, tapes, NAS, SAS? I've gone from tapes to hard drives due to hard drives having less issues, being MUCH faster to backup and restore ect... Was that an ok move? Is the industry standard becoming external…

0x0000008E Hotfix in KB 829422
by Guest msdawkins- 3 replies

I have a Win 2003 Std Edition w/ SP1 server with the problem described in KB article 829422. Microsoft has sent me the hotfix per my request. The only problem is that when I try to install it, it says that "the Service Pack version is newer than the update, so it is not necessary to install", and then closes. I have checked the file version of Win32k.sys (which is the file to be updated) and my file is a "lower" version number than the one described in the article. Has anyone else seen this issue? What is the point of the hotfix if it can't be installed?

Dual processor Quad Core Quad Processor?
by Guest Jeff- 1 reply
OK, building servers here. Licensing costs a lot of money. Standard 2003 r2 supports 8 smp processors, Enterprise windows 2003 r2 supports 16. Does that mean if I have 4 - quad core processors, Windows Standard is not an option as this will equate to 16 cores? Also what happens on XP Pro when you run a Quad core and it only supports a dual processor?

Question about merging 2 domains....
by Guest FombyJambox- 0 replies

I have big job ahead of me and really need some help getting pointed in the right direction so here goes: I have a 2003 domain that covers my HQ office and 2 remote sites. I also have another site that has a 2000 domain. I need to get the site with 2000 on the same domain as the rest of the orgainization. The remote site only consists of about 40 users so I'm thinking about just putting a 2003 DC on site and then creating user accounts from scratch. It seems with so few users this might be easier than trying to upgrade the existing domain and then merge them somehow. My main concerns (at this point) are about moving the SQL2000 server between domai…

Hi, I am having a problem connecting from Domain Controller "A" to Domain Controller "B" using the Computer Management console (compmgmt.msc). While logged on as domain admin, I open compmgmt.msc and can view the local event logs but cannot view the event logs on Domain Controller B. The odd thing is that DC "A" and DC "B" can both use cpmpmgmt.msc to connect to DC "C" and view the logs on that domain controller. but "A" and "B" cannot connect to each other. Any advice on how to correct this situation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! -- bb

Unlock Computer Window and System Login Screen Greyed Out
by Guest Bryan Smith- 1 reply
Hello, I have a server running Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard, and starting today, when the session locks, the 'Unlock Computer' window will grey out and disable the username and password fields. The only resolution I have found is to reboot the server, however, since this server is pretty important in our environment, I was wondering if anyone had an idea on how to resolve without the repeated reboots. This is happening to the lockout/login screens from Remote Desktop sessions, VNC sessions, and from the system console.

Cannot make connection with RAS server behind firewall.
by Guest John N- 3 replies

I have been struggling to get my remote access server to work. The symptoms are somewhat inconsistent, and I’m guessing that I missed something major here. I have two servers behind my firewall, a netopia 3386-ENT. One is providing web and mail services, and the other is a domain controller. Both are W2K3 fully patched. Our ISP issued us a /248 network giving us 6 usable IP addresses. The netopia is part of an enterprise network comprised of three site to site VPNs, both connecting to this network. The VPNs connect using a PPTP connection. I’m trying to get users to authenticate to the domain controller using RAS, and I’ve assigned one of the p…

ntbackup block size
by Guest Sam Casperson- 1 reply

Hello all. I have several branch servers that use ntbackup for nightly backups. These backups are performed on Quantum DAT72 tapes, usually running on Adaptec SCSI controllers. The OS for the servers are Windows 2003 Service Pack 2. There seems to be a problem appearing with some of the tapes from the branch servers. We regularly ship tapes to H/O for testing and restoring information, but several of them can be read from our server at H/O. Our H/O server is running on similar hardware and OS but is using backup exec 11. When cataloguing the tapes, it gives and error about the block size being used is incorrect. I used the tape utility that comes wi…

SVCHOST.exe causing excessive paging.
by Guest Chris Coates- 2 replies

I have a Win 2003 X64 server that is a dedicated SQL 2005 server. I have noticed excessive paging going on, (Over 530 page faults per second), and tracked it down to svchost.exe. I know that the server is not having memory issues. It is using just 5GB of the 20GB installed. Any suggestions what would cause excessive paging from svchost.exe, especially when there is so much RAM avaliable? Thanks Chris

We have our print server and our major application running on the same windows 2003 server. Lately we have been having some problem with running print application. We are trying to track down what is happening, with little luck. I am wondering if it is a good idea having the print server and application server on the same systems?

Hi, I have an access database that is shared by the network users. These users tend to forget to close the applications when they finish their work at the end of the day. This makes the server unable to backup the file (being open). Can someone advice me how to gracefully close the file when all users are longer using the db (even though their application might still be open)? Thanks

Servers Not visible in network neighborhood

We run only xp and server 2003 at our school I can ping, and \\servername to the servers, but they are not visible in any of the trees. Any ideas how to resolve this? Client machines are visible. Would it be because of the DHCP scope, i.e. not displaying reserved addresses ? Any ideas would help quite a bit. Thank you!

by Guest Eric Crumpton- 5 replies

Apparently some protion of the telephony service components is damanged on a Windows 2003 server. The telephony service will not start and when you use the telephony snap in, you cannont manage any providers. In fact the providers is greyed out and no providers are listed for the server. If anyone knows a way to restore this service I would appreciate the input. Thanks in advance.

We have a standard windows 2003 (SP1) server with exchange 2003 (SP2) installed. It is running some software called Neverfail which basically replicated this server to another one thus providing fault tollarance. We have received an error in the system log which i have never seen before and searching the internet hasn't brought up anything. Source: HookRegistryDriver Event ID: 10 Computer: Local Description: ObQueryNameString failed with status - - 1073741444 It has never occured before except for this once last night. Is this something I should be worried about?

Scheduled task, ran interactively ?
by Guest andyjgw- 0 replies

Hi Here's what I'm trying to do: Create a scheduled task that will be installed via group policy as a computer startup script, that will run at a certain time a day and interact with the currently logged on user. The task creation and such works fine, but I'm stuck in that the task runs with local SYSTEM privileges and thus the user never sees the interface (actually, an HTA html application pop up). I've tried messing around with /U and /RU switches with "schtasks / create" to no avail. If I specify the user, then it prompts for that user's password - and the problem with that anyway is that if User A puts in their password, but User B happens to be th…

SBS2003 very slow client logon and no GPO inheritence
by Guest Oliver Maynard- 2 replies

I am having a nightmare of a time with a new SBS 2003 installation. Users take an eternity to log on and when they do no settings from the gpo associated to them are applied. I have a very simple policy applied that runs a bat file containing 3 'net use' commands to map drives. Nothing else has been changed. Once logged on I can access the server without any problems. I have a server 2003 installation that ruins with no problems at all...SBS seems to be slightly different but I have been working on this for hours now to no avail so any input would be very much appreciated. Thanks
