I have taken over a network with ~150 servers (Mixed Windows 2000 & 2003) and 50~workstations (Mixed Windows 2000 and XP) with all servers and workstations running on static IP addresses. The network is spread across a number of VLANs and everything is running without problem, but we have recently had to change our primary and secondary DNS servers which resulted in a large amount of manual work on every box. Subsequently we would like to look at deploying a redundant DHCP configuration with reservations for all of the servers and probably all of the clients as well, but are struggling on the best way to achieve this. If we were to deploy two DHCP…

Remote Desktop Lockups
by Guest Tim Gowen- 1 reply

I'm seeing a lot of lock-ups with remote users on a particular W2K3 server. I've tried the KeepAlive registry fix, but it was already set to the recommended setting. Power management or screen savers don't seem to be the issue either. The screens of the remote session just go to the background colour, with no icons. They're still shown as connected in the Administrator, but they cannot be made to come alive. Tim

Hi, On one of our servers the sysvol\sysvol\<domainname>\policies and ..scripts folders are deleted. This was probably due to replication problems with FRS and it has been replicated 'the wrong way'. How can I have the system autocreate these folders again as they are after having installed a new system? Thanks a lot for comments and tips... cheers jake

Non-Roaming mandatory profiles
by Guest Joseph T Corey- 4 replies

Has anyone successfully created a terminal server environment where you had non-roaming mandatory profiles? I'd like to take the idea of a mandatory profile and apply it to all new local accounts that are created, but for numerous reasons I can't use roaming or TS roaming profiles. I'd accept a solution that just deleted the local account at logoff. I've looked at delprof, but that seems to be better suited as a startup or shutdown script. Any help is appreciated! -- Joseph T. My Windows 2003 Server is totally locked. No mouse movement. CTRL ALT DEL doesn't do anything. The server still responds to pings. However WINS does not seem to be responding. How can I troubleshoot what happened and try to do an orderly shutdown. Note: This is a terminal server that had a number of sessions open when it hung up. Thanks, -- Mike Schumann

How much RAM Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition can use ?
by Guest Peter- 9 replies
Hi, If we have 3GB of RAM in a Windows 2003 Server, we would like to know would it be possible for us to make use all of them or we have to add switches like /3G in the Boot.ini ? If it is the truth, we have to add this switch in some of our servers. This is because a fellow has mentioned that by default, Kernel and Operating System uses 2GB of that XGB of RAM. Regards, Peter

Offline Files and Synchronisation
by Guest andrew@tme.co.uk- 3 replies

A client has a problem where 3 of the users laptops are setup to synchronise My Docs with a Windows 2003 SP2 server. The problem is that the laptops will not save properly when working offline. MS office will lock up when trying to save to the offline folder and sync errors occur when the users return to the office. I have tried re-initialising the offline cache but this doesn't make a difference. I have also tried it on a brand new laptop and still the errors occurs. This all suggests that the server is misbehaving. Is there a away to re-initilise the offline database on the server? Or can someone shed some light on this? Thanks Andrew

Hi I have installed WDS in our Windows 2003 server (SP2) and this server is a member of our exiting Domain. WDS is installed on a Native mode. We configured the server and things are quite fine, how ever I'm facing the problem in the following situation. 1. I ran sysprep in the Win XP box 2. On restarting the PC, I pressed F12 and pointed the PC to WDS server 3. I selected the option Capture, to capture the image from the PC to WDS server 4. In the option, I selected "upload the image to WDS Server" 5. Now the capture process is successfully completed in the local PC, now as a next step this WIM image must be uploaded to WDS server. 6. In this …

security log file size issue
by Guest inenewbl- 1 reply

Hi all. My DC server's security log is set to "overwrite events as needed" and max log file size is set to more than 4GB. However it seems the file size of security log can only go up to 500+MB. I notice this because events that were log previously over the past few days like 21st,20th&19th sept is not there. The earliest event i have is 22nd sept. Hence i would like to know why my security log seem to start overwriting events at 500+MB even though it is set to "overwrite events as needed". Thks in advance.

Roaming profiles with 2k3 and Vista..not working...help please.
by Guest ridergroov- 0 replies

Hi folks. I'm trying to get roaming profiles to work on a Vista Ultimate machine with Server 2003. Everything worked fine in XP until I started using Vista. I know the older profile doesn't' work with Vista, I know Vista uses a V2 at the end of its profile folder, but I can't for the life of me figure out why it won't copy the profile over to the user profile shared folder. It created the V2 folder just fine but it will not copy the profile to the server. Thanks.

Hi, I just upgraded my Windows 2000 Server to Windows Server 2003 (Standard, 32-bit), and I think that it's mostly working, but at boot, I am seeing a popup saying that a driver did not start. When I look in Event Viewer, I see the following event: Event Type: Error Event Source: Service Control Manager Event Category: None Event ID: 7026 Date: 9/22/2007 Time: 9:57:12 PM User: N/A Computer: TESTWIN2K Description: The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load: viaagp1 For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
