'Eject Tape Flag' registry setting
by Guest Steve- 1 reply
OS: Server 2003 R2. I was digging through the registry to change the number or NTBackup logs from 10 to 30 and noticed a registry key I haven't seen before. Location: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Ntbackup Does anyone know what the 'eject tape flag' reg key controls? I don't have access to my 2003 server just now but it might be 'tape eject flag' instead, it may also be under one of the sub keys. I'm hoping it means the tape will be auto ejected after the backup completes (crosses fingers). I cannot find any documentation of this setting and don't have permission to test it.

NICs: 'load balancing' option
by Guest Steve- 0 replies

I see the 'load balancing' item in with the TCP and 'file and printer sharing' options for my NICs. Does this serve the same function as nic teaming or is this something to do with clustering (or something else entirely)?

Permissions Quandry
by Guest Blackberry- 4 replies

Hi All This might be a real dumbo question, but I don't know how to do it - I'm thick basically :0) Each class in our school has their own user account as part of the Win2k3/AD/GPO setup. When they login, their My Docs is redirected to a folder on the server, usual setup nothing fancy. Inside the My Docs folder we have created individual folders for each pupil in the class. What I want to do is set the permissions so that the children can't rename or delete these pupil folders, but they can do anything they want inside these folders. It's just so that the folders stay where they are, don't have 'Sam Boyle999999999999999999999' names, etc Any…

Using a master NTUSER file
by Guest Blackberry- 2 replies
Hi All I work in a number of schools and I have to set up (too) many PCs in the same standard form. Because 99% of these are Win2K3 clients we are talking numerous user profiles as well, so I currently log on as one user, set the Desktop, Screensaveer, etc stuff up and then copy the NTUSER file from this account to the default user so that every user profile that logs on has this style. This seems to work fine, but I would now like to take this a step further and keep of a copy of this NTUSER file so that on a new machine I simply drop this into the default user folder straight away. My question is, am I allowed to do this from one machine to another or wil…

licensing question
by Guest pete0085- 0 replies
I have a general licensing question. I was looking at our licenses under the licenses tab and noticed there are 25 per server licenses purchased and 0 per device/per user allocated and 0 per server reached. This seemed a little weird to me that there would be 25 per server purchaced and 0 being used. The only person that logs on directly to the server is the builtin admin account, but everyone uses it everyday as it's a file and domain controller. Can someone explain this to me??

The problem i am having is when i use the ConnectComputer tool under "http://servername", i get the following error: =================================================== You are not authorized to view this page The Web server you are attempting to reach has a list of IP addresses that are not allowed to access the Web site, and the IP address of your browsing computer is on this list. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------…

Allowing user to modify their Network connections
by Guest Blackberry- 4 replies

Hi All I have a Win2k3 server setup at a school using AD/GPO to administer things. I have two sets of users, pupils and teachers, and I've tried to lock things down as much as possible really on both accounts where practical. The problem I have is that the teachers want to use their laptops on their networks (wireless and wired) at home and I therefore need to let them have access to the network connections/configurations so that they can change their ips, subnets, ssids, etc. As a test I added network administrators to the staff's account (ie they were network admins and domain users) and although they could get to the network properties main wind…

raid controller 1 contains bad stripe
by Guest Jeremy Schubert- 3 replies

I have a server 2003 in my school running RAID 5. A couple months back, I replaced a hard drive because my event log was filling up and the light on the drive was orange (obviously RAID troubleshooting is not my forte!) Now my event log is filled again with: An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0 during a paging operation. A freind gave me some error checking software and it comes up with the message: raid controller 1 contains bad stripe Can I assume the problem is the RAID controller or do I need to do further investigating? Thanks,

what is the firewall exception for folder sharing?
by Guest Jeff- 0 replies

Hey I have 2 computers, winXPpro (sp2 installed) machine and win2k3 machine at home. Configured in a network, they share the same internet connection, via a router I've shared a folder on the win2k3 machine, but from the winXP machine I'm having trouble connect to this folder. Both machines are using Windows Firewall. I can connect if I turn off Windows Firewall. So what exceptions to I need to implement in Windows Firewall on both machines so that folder sharing and other Active Directory services works without problems? Jeff

R2 clarification
by Guest Nicked_Today- 6 replies

Hi, I´ve been browsing the web for several hours reading about R2 and SP2 and I´m just getting more confused. I have several Windows Server 2003 Std with no SP and with SP1 and SP2 but no R2. I have Software Assurance so I can take advantage of the R2 version. Win2003 with SP1 can be upgraded to R2 but I got a test server with no service pack which I tried to upgrade to R2 to test but I get a message saying I need SP2? So do I need to apply SP2 to my server and then install R2? I also heard that if I install SP2 and when R2 I will not be able to uninstall SP2? If I apply SP2 and when R2 will the server be a Windows Server 2003 R2 version not sayi…

Shadow Copy Client not displaying - RDP affected?
by Guest LindaV- 1 reply
Hi, I've been struggling with an issue for a while, so I was wondering if anyone had any input. Running a Dell Poweredge with W2K3 SP2, all of the latest patches. We take shadow copies hourly, Mon-Fri 9-5PM. Shadow copies will work for 5 or so days - and I will check on them at my XP client (where the client is installed). For some reason, after I check on them with the client, the next time I go view to make sure it is still backing up, the shadow copies client will not show any new shadow copies have been created. For example at 10:05AM I will check the previous versions client, and see an 10AM entry, and information is available. At 11:10AM,…

I have a Windows Server 2003 R2 setup which I installed using the ISO files downloaded with my technet plus subscription, and used the product key provided through technet+. I have now purchased a Microsoft Open License for this product - is there any way to convert my existing server to a regular license, rather than having to wipe everything and reinstall from scratch? Thanks Ralph

Demoted server, now no net logon service
by Guest tke402- 3 replies
Hi, I demoted a dc in my domain to a member server. Now the net logon service does not start. This is also causing the windows time service and other services to not start. The demotion was clean and successful and I removed all remaining service records from DNS (the server was also a DNS server with AD intergrated zones). I have also uninstalled DNS from the machine. Any ideas what is keeping net logon from starting? All the errors in the event logs are issues that trace back to the netlogon service not starting but nothing tells me what is causing the netlogon service to not start. Thanks, TKE402

Roaming Profiles and Redirected folders
by Guest Scott Micale- 14 replies

We use roaming profiles and redirected folders. I want to know what is the right setting on the share for offline settings. Should it be: 1. Only the files and programs that users specify will be available offline. 2. All files and programs that users open from the share will be automatically available offline. Check box Optimized for performance. 3. Files or programs from the share will not be available offline I am using Option 1 right now, but wondered if it should be option 2. I am noticing the redirected Desktop is not putting things that are deleted into the users Recycle Bin and I am wondering if it is because of the share offline setting…
