I have serveral users, with roaming profiles, that use the same folder as Domain Admininstartors. Now I want to take the administrator privledge away from them and still let them use the same folder. How do I set all users as "Owners" of the folder? Would I set up another Group (non-administrator group) and add the users to that? thx -- John D. Leonard -- Sage

by Guest Tom- 15 replies

I'm getting a error message on my XP clients: "The system cannot log you on now because the domain "example" is not available." However, my laptop is joined to the domain and directly connected to the same switch the server is connected to. I can login locally and ping the server and unc map to it, but if I restart the machine it still won't log in. I've tried several clients. The Windows Vista clients I have works fine. On the XP client I can ping the server, but the server can't the client. The Server is Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition with SP2. The Vista client can ping and be pinged without problems. backup tape ejects early
by Guest lenny- 15 replies
Hi, I am backing up to a 4mm Data Tape (72GB) using the SBS Backup program (with the Windows Backup program). I am trying to backup C, D and System State. I have noticed over the last couple of weeks that the System State has not backed up at all and it doesn't look like the D drive is being backed up correctly either. When I check the tape in the morning it has already been ejected but before this problem started it stayed in the drive. Below is a copy of the latest log. I notice that the media is not being found on the second part of the backup but why is it being ejected early? I have reset the backup schedule but this doesn't seem to make any differenc…

PDC - BDC Conflicts
by Guest Jean Paul Mertens- 15 replies
Hello to all, I have a problem with a BDC (windows 2000 server) who does not see that the PDC (SBS 2000) is back on-line. I have got my PDC crashed, and for some reason the NT-Mirror had stopped some time ago. I have taken the PDC out of the network, and the BDC took over the security with no problem. I have put my (early stopped) mirror disk as master and restored alle backups so that the PDC is ok. I have put the PDC back in the network and had to disconnect (temporary set them to workgroup) all workstations and servers from the domain and then reconnect them to the domain. So far so good until I tried to do the same with my BDC but he keeps saying th…

I don't know if anyone can shed any light on this. RDP stopped working on our 2003 Server. The machine is actually running SBS 2003 with sp2 (I am posting here since RDP is a more general Windows app). RDP was working on this server and then between one use and then next, several months ago it just stopped. Details: -Any client attempting to connect gets: "The client could not connect to remote computer." (Including localhost) -Remote Desktop is turned on in the Remote tab of System Properties. -Terminal Services is in Administration mode. -HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TerminalServer\WinStations\RDP\PortNumber is set to 3389, bu…

2003 share access issue!!!!!!
by Guest Monkey1888- 14 replies

Hi All, I have a share access issue that I can’t solve. The problem exists when attempting to access a 2003 member server share for a PC’s in different 2000 child domain. For example I have a main domain called N.co.uk and then several child domains. All of these domains are running two Windows 2000 DC and several XP clients. All was working fine until I added a windows 2003 member server to host share on one of the child domains. The users on the child domain that hosts the new 2003 server can access the shares fine, the users on the parent domain can access the shares but any users on the other of the child domains cannot access the shares. They are…

system freeze very often
by Guest lenny- 14 replies

Hi, Over the last few weeks the system (Dell PowerEdge SC440 Windows Server 2003 for small business server- out of warranty by 3 months!) has started to freeze. The screen freezes with no mouse movement or keyboard input registered. It started just every few days then sometimes twice a day then every few days then once a day and today every 10 minutes or so. I have changed the RAM (After the Health Monitor showed an error with the RAM) and also the LAN card (there wasn't any errors but I thought I should try it) but although they seemed to make a difference it was a red herring and now it is as bad as ever. There are no errors in the log files except …

RDP Access Hung after reboot
by Guest News Group- 14 replies
This has been happening more and more ever since the release of SP1 and SP2. After a system reboot through scheduled tasks (tsshutdn /REBOOT), we are not able to RDP into the server but the server is up and running (no other issues). This doesn't happen every time but it seems to be more frequent. The only way to fix it is to plug-in at the console and reboot the server again. Restarting any RPC related services never helps. We have a mixture of Windows 2003 Standard/Enterprise servers with all updates applied and running the latest RDC console on servers and workstations. Does anyone else run into this problem and if so, any suggestion on how to …

Problems to add PCs to domain
by Guest Walter P.- 14 replies
Hi all, I have a Win 2003 Server, with about 50 PCs (XP Pro SP2) into the domain. My problem is when I try to add a couple of PCs to the domain. I normally add them thru My Computer - Computer Name - Change - Member Of... reboot. There, there is no problem, but when a user logs in, with his domain user, you can see that the GPOs are not applied, and that the PC cannot "see" the domain (for instance, to assign rights to domain users) Nevertheless, the PC appears in the Computers OU and its full name includes the domain... I have tried to re-add the PC several times, deleting the PC account from the AD, but it is the same. Any ideas? Thanks! W.

Roaming Profiles and Redirected folders
by Guest Scott Micale- 14 replies
We use roaming profiles and redirected folders. I want to know what is the right setting on the share for offline settings. Should it be: 1. Only the files and programs that users specify will be available offline. 2. All files and programs that users open from the share will be automatically available offline. Check box Optimized for performance. 3. Files or programs from the share will not be available offline I am using Option 1 right now, but wondered if it should be option 2. I am noticing the redirected Desktop is not putting things that are deleted into the users Recycle Bin and I am wondering if it is because of the share offline setting…

Hi, I am trying to put a action plan for the migration of our current domain controller to a new domain controller [as we are running into space issues]. This is what I have came up [this is my first time]. Goal: To successful migrate the existing domain controller (pkserv1) to another server (dc2) Action Plan: 1) installation of windows 2003, application of all available service packs and windows update on dc2 2) network integration of dc2, including domain membership and IP configuration 3) installation of DNS on dc2 [as a secondary zone]. Some background info: the primary zone for DNS is running from the exchange server and the 2 d…

Printing from a PC outside domain
by Guest JohnBates- 14 replies
I have a situation where we have 3 production stations that all have their own domains and on each there is a Printer attached to one of the PC's and shared. I have 1 mobile station that has a single PC on it that is used by each of the 3 prodution stations as needed. It is a stand alone workstation not joined to any of the 3 domains but... They occasionally need to print from the mobile station which has no printer of it's own. Is it possible to print from a computer that is not part of a domain to a printer that is part of a domain? If it helps - all 3 of the production stations are clones of each other including IP schemes. The mobile station has…

simple networking question
by Guest pete0085- 14 replies

Hopefully this isn't a "dumb" question. I'm setting up a lab at home to work on my 291 exam. I am running server 2003 on virtual pc installed on two different pcs. I need the two to be able to communicate. I attempted to use my liksys router and had them both hooked up to the router, using the same gateway. They were not able to communicate (ping). I don't believe its necessary to get out to the internet. Would I need to use a hub instead and plug them both into a small hub? Sorry if this is too easy of a question. Neither of the virtual pcs are set up as a DC.
