Roaming profiles - laptop users who travel to sites with slow link
by Guest RIMikeG- 1 reply

Hi, All our users -include laptop users - are configured with roaming profiles - all stored on a file server in our large well connected head office. Many of the laptop users travel to some of our smaller sites which have very slow links e.g. 512k /128k ADSL. I just wanted to confirm my understanding of roaming profiles - specifically that when the user signs on in the small site that Windows XP will try to pull down the profile from the central file server. Can anyone confirm this ? Regards Michael

Gurus, I am trying to change just the SourcePath value in my Windows Server 2003 Registry via script. I want to change it from it's current value to "D:\ENGLISH\WIN2003\32BIT\ENT_WITH_SP1\I386". What kind of simple script would enable me to change just that one value? The path to that is: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion. -- Spin

Robocopy
by Guest jas0n- 4 replies

Where is the home of current Robocopy information? The sync software we use doesn't work on 2008. I'm awaiting an install of Commvault which will include the replication so in the short term Robocopy seems to work well. Is there somewhere where Robocopy and all its versions, faqs, etc lives. It appears to be built into the 2008x64 OS I have installed and I've seen mention of also built into Vista. It appears to be a later build which includes the dcopy:t timestamps funtionality although this is not listed in the output of /? - doesn't seem to be much info about.

Registry Error
by Guest IOWeb- 5 replies

I am running Windows Server 2003 and Exchange Server 2003. I remote installed a System Center Data Protection Manager agent and needed to reboot my server. Having rebooted the server it now comes up with a blue screen stop error. The error is 0x00000051 and says it is a Registry Error. I get this error regardless of whether I am trying to load normally or in safe mode. Any ideas as to how i can recover my sever? Thanks Gavin

by Guest Bill Artman- 8 replies

I am using Robocopy GUI 3.1.2.0 with Windows Scheduler to to copy/sync a folder from a client PC to a shared folder on a Microsoft Windows Home Server. The scheduler runs Robocopy every hour. I want to use the /MIR Switch to copy everything from the Client PC folder to the WHS shared folder and when a file changes or is deleted in the Client folder the change will be copied to the WHS shared folder or the file I ill be deleted in the WHS folder. People on other forums have told me that the /MIR switch purges/deletes the entire destination (WHS) folder when a source file change occurs then Robocopy copies the entire source folder to the destination fol…

Antivirus Solutions

We're currently running SAV Corporate 10 on our 2003/XP network and really don't want to shell out the $1500 for new 50 new licenses. Symantec has become increasing more bloated with each new version to the point where, if I wanted to upgrade to Endpoint Protection 11, I'd need to upgrade my workstations, and that's not going to happen any time soon. I've been looking into some alternate solutions and wanted some opinions on NOD32. AVComparatives.org shows it has a high detection rate and there seems to be a lot of praise coming from IT admins in various forums. I've installed the trial and like it so far. Uses much less resources than SAV. Anyone h…

Burning IMG file to DVD
by Guest Steve- 6 replies

I downloaded Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition with SP2 (Trial edition) Microsoft's download page says to download and burn the ISO to CD or DVD but the download is a IMG extention, not ISO. I have tried to burn the IMG to DVD but all it does is move the file to the DVD and not extract it like a ZIP or ISO would. I am using Sonic DigitalMedia but can't seem to figure how to extract it. I have looked all over google for an answer and everyone seems to have this problem. I have changed the extention to ISO but that didn't do anything. Here is the link http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/R2/trial/installinstruct.mspx

Hope this is the right forum! Looking for hardware advice...
by Guest Steve Z- 3 replies

I've got a new customer in that we are going to develop an app for. Basically they process lots and lots of documents - PDF's and Word Doc's. Our app is going to let them drag-and-drop these files into a screen which will then "move" then automatically into a share on a file server. The app will also manage these files "via" a CASE NUMBER - so we are going to have MS SQL running with a database of these cases. Long story short... At any rate - there are not many users - dozen or so - so the MS SQL part is the least of our worries hardware wise. But the documents get into the GB's in size. Do you have any opinions on what a file server like this …

Scheduled Task .bat file 0x1 Error
by Guest Rick Williams- 0 replies
I was having trouble getting a scheduled task to run on Windows Server 2008 that was calling a .bat file to run. Specifically, I was getting a 0x1 error whenever the scheduled task ran. The solution was to type in the path to the ..bat file in the Start In(optional): in the edit action window. You get there by pressing the Edit button under the Actions tab. Here is an example path you'd type in if your .bat file is located under the temp folder at the root of drive c: c:\temp\bat I wanted to report this solution because it took me several days to discover this solution and I wanted to save someone else the trouble.

Hi there I have a 2008 server running mainly for remote logins via terminal services. I have set up this server in workgroup mode with no AD. I have some shares that I want a certain group to have auto mounted when they login via TS. is this possible? Also, I want to hide a hard drive, say Z:, from certain users/groups. I have already denied them access to that drive, but now i want it to be not visible in my computer when they log in. is that possible as well? Thanks a lot. WS 2008 32-bit MAX Usable RAM?
by Guest David F- 7 replies
I am currently running WS 2008 32-bit on my laptop as a workstation (I'm using PerformancePoint Server 2007 whiich only works on a MS Server OS) and when I use msinfo32.exe it says there is 3.93 GB Total Physical Memory (as opposed to 4 GB Installed Physical Memory). So this means that almost all 4 GB of RAM is available to WS 2008 32-bit. Is that correct? That compares with 3 to 3.5 GB that is available to MS Vista installations. Correct? TIA
