Converting secondary DNS server to primary
by Guest swu30@hotmail.com- 2 replies

I'm hoping this is a simple question - I have a DNS server on W2k that is a secondary on our main Forward Lookup Zone. I would like to bump up to be the primary DNS server for our zone, is it as easy as right clicking on the zone and in the Properties, clicking on the Change... button? That would have to happen for all the reverse lookup zones as well? I would also need to change the SOA record. Is there more to do? Thx!

Certificate server Web enrollment problems
by Guest Briano- 4 replies

For some reason I cannot connect to our certificate server via the web interface. Using http://servername/certsrv I get a "page cannot be displayed error". Should I be able to connect this way at the certificate server itself ? If I should be able, I can't. How can I determine if the cert web server is actually running? It appears to be, at least it does not show "stopped". Is ther a troubleshooting routine I can follow somewhere ? Thanks for any help. Brian

windows 2008 server (member of AD) in 2003 domain possible?
by Guest markm75- 1 reply

I'm assuming the answer to this will be yes.. but.. My thinking is this: We have a box, which i have 2003 server installed.. we were about to install 2007 exchange on this system, but i thought, perhaps I should wait and just install 2008 server on this machine, then install exchange 2007 on that (once sp1 is released apparently). I guess there is no reason to install a beta of 2008 then install 2007 exchange on that, as i couldnt just apply a patch t get it to the full 2008 server when released (either).. Does anyone know if 2008 server will be released to businesses in November of 2007.. and also an eta on when exchange 2007 sp1 will be released? …

Server 2003 Group Policies - Affecting Administrative Profile
by Guest wideye- 4 replies
Hello, I'm setting up a dedicated Terminal Server and I have a question regarding local group policies in Windows Server 2003. Is there a way to apply group policies to all user profiles aside from Administrator? Obviously I want certain restrictions for user profiles that need not apply to the administrative profile (Example: disabling access to the control panel). Is there a way to specify which users GP's apply to? Thanks,

Resuming failed backup
by Guest Ben- 3 replies
I am using Windows Backup (NTbackup.exe) to backup 1TB of files to a network drive. Because it takes 36 hours for this to complete, the chance of it failing is high. Can I resume a failed backup (without resorting to a subsequent differential backup)? Is robocopy a better solution for what I'm doing? My concern is with with "in use" files, (ie. a PST files was causing Robocopy to stop, retry, stop retry endlessly). What is your recommendation, besides using a third party tool. Your help is greatly appreciated. -Ben

Optimum page file size for windows server 2003
by Guest RossB- 4 replies

What is the optimum page file size for windows server 2003. As RAM size increases, is it really necessary to increase the pagefile size to match. It used to be the case that MS recommended 1*RAM for pagefile size, but is it really necessary to have an 8GB pagefile on a server with 8GB RAM, would this not place an excessive load on the disks and waste a lot of disk space. What is the discussion groups thoughts on this?

this is the weirdest problem i've ever seen. We have a user who's first print job from her RDC session always hangs every day. Then when she logs off the server and back on to clear her virtual print queue mapped to the network printer installed on her local computer, she can then print. I've tried deleting her profile from the server, reinstalling the printer on her local computer, no such luck. Any ideas of what could I could possibly try next???? She use mstsc to connect to the 2000 SP4 server. Even cancelling the job in her virtual print queue doesn't work, it just sits at Deleting forever until she logs off. Is there some sort of logging I can …

Help! I changed the Logon properties for Remote procedure Call (RPC) service & can't change back.

Help! I changed the Logon properties for Remote procedure Call (RPC) service & can't change back. Hi Sorry for the dramatic subject... I hope it’s a fairly simple thing... Basically I changed the Logon properties for the RPC service on our PDC from the original Network Service account to use the Local System account. I did this to see if it would fix an error I was having with another service not starting citing a dependency group failed to start & the only thing in the dependency group is the RPC. So... I thought if I changed the Logon credentials and it worked I'd have a better clue as to what was wrong... (That probably sounds very irrat…

System State Location?
by Guest Triage- 0 replies
I noticed when installing remote access clients for BackupExec 9.1 that on one of my domain controllers the System State was listed separately within the file structure and on the other it was listed within the Shadow Copy Components. Both DCs are running WinServer2003 SP2. The only difference is that one of the servers is the Global Catalog (the one on which the system state is listed separately). Shadow copy is disabled on both systems. How should the directory structure properly appear? -- "I enjoyed my youth so much that I decided to bring it along with me." -G.C.

How to set NIC to be default
by Guest Miha- 4 replies
Hi Have a problem with setting one of two Ethernet adapters to default. Win2003 Web Server, 2 NICs are connected to a switch which has two firewalls connected to it. 1 NIC 190.191.0.18/16 GW 190.191.2.1 2 NIC 190.191.0.17/16 GW 190.191.0.1 First NIC routes through a firewall that has access to the internet, second NIC routers through a firewall that has access to LAN and Internet. But after restarting server, or disabling/enabling second NIC, default traffic is always routed through second NIC through GW 190.191.0.1, but I want that internet traffic is always routed through the first NIC that has GW 190.191.2.1? So in other words…

need to track RDC logins
by Guest Cindy B- 0 replies

I need to be able to track all RDC connections to our Windows 2003 servers. I've been trying to find a way to narrow down an event log -ID- that will allow me to do that. I've tried Security - information - 552, which gives me what I need -connection/time/userID/source workstation , but it also reports a lot of system acitivty. We have Vendors with access, but need to document all of their connections. Is anyone currently doing this or anything similar, by filtering the event logs? If so can you tell me what log IDs you're having success with. We do have a server monitoring software - but it has limited filtering capabilites. Log- source - category …

Kerberos Service and File Replication Service not running.
by Guest chobbney@hotmail.com- 1 reply

Hi, We had a power failure while an offline disk defragmentation was happening (on a Windows 2003 Standard Server). Upon reboot, a Chkdsk ran which found errors in the file system and fixed them. When the Server boots up, the Kerberos Key Distribution Center service and File Replication Service aren't running (normally automatic). Starting them manually gives me the following: ----------------------- Could not start the Kerberos Key Distribution Center service on local computer. Error 126: The specified module could not be found. ----------------------- and ----------------------- Could not start the File Replication Service service on local computer. …
