DFS x64 and x32 servers??
by Guest WetBehindEars- 0 replies

Ok, here is my issue. I have a server in the main office which is a 32bit non R2 release (Domain Controller). I have a branch office server which is 64bit and IS a R2 version server. I want to setup DFS between these two servers. I plan on upgrading the non R2 server to a R2 version. My question follows, can you run DFS between a 32bit R2 server and a 64bit R2 server or should the DFS run on matching server types?

WDS hung at 84% on "Expanding files"
by Guest dharmabum- 1 reply

I'm trying my first WDS network install of a customized WinXP .wim image. The initial install goes fine for around 70 minutes but then hangs at "Expanding files 84%". Then only network traffic from the installing machine to the WDS server seems to be TCP keep-alive messages. I'm not sure what to check to see what is hanging this process up.

Does DNS Replication issues cause user issues?
by Guest Brad- 7 replies

Recently our corporate office created a VPN tunnel between our PDC and one of their servers. Our server is running Server 2003, DHCP and DNS. Everything was working fine (user permissions, users seeing printers etc..) until corporate made this change. I ran netdiag and while I don’t have the exact error message, my DNS server 192.168.7.2 reports back fine, but then it says there is a fatal error connecting to corporate’s server, 192.168.1.7. Would having this DNS error cause user problems inside my network? I did add a new user a couple of days after this change and while his permissions are set correctly, he is unable to access any of the share drives o…

Disk errors on OS drive: can't mirror or backup
by Guest Neil- 12 replies

I have an IDE drive that hosts the OS (Windows 2000 Server) on my Exchange 2000 server. I have another IDE drive installed, and I attempted to mirror this drive using Win2k's software RAID but halfway through the process it aborted, stating that the original drive had errors. The Exchange DBs are on a seperate RAID-5 array and I have backups of my data so I'm not so worried about that, but I cannot mirror this drive or get a good backup of it. When I look at the drive in Disk Management it has a little yellow triangle with an exclamation point next to the drive and it says Errors. I believe I may have some physically bad sectors. What would be the bes…

We have recently applied Service Pack 2 to our Windows 2003 server. Upon reboot we experience quite a bit of issues, many minor ones we have cleaned up. There are two major issues in which have been causing some problems. 1. When opening Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer we recieve the following error: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library. Runtime Error! Program: C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe or for Internet Explorer C:\WINDOWS\iexplore.exe. This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information. 2. Our Windows XP Professional users runing Microsoft Access…

I'm trying to implement a SSL certificate in an Exchange server 2007 for the OWA website. Using windows server 2003 64bits. I'm a little confused about the steps for doing this. Does anyone knows a webpage where I can get an explanation on how the certificates work? The only thing I know is that I need to create the certificate, then export that certificate to the client, so both can communicate??? but i don't have any idea on how to do this. Any help will be appreciated. thanks Eduardo

Shared file in use/Read Only access question ...
by Guest E-Double- 7 replies
When one person is in, say, a Word or Excel document that is in a departmental folder that is shared by say 12-20 people in the department, and another user tries to open the doc that is already in use, the second user will receive the standard 'File in use, read only copy will only be available' (or something to that effect). Is there some way for Windows Server 2003 (or Active Directory?) to either notify the second user or for that second user to find out who the first user is who has the file open and exclusive write rights to that file? The problem is, for example with up to 20 peeps in a department the second user has to call up or check with up to …

Which DC handles LDAP requests?
by Guest John- 0 replies
Hi, We have a group here that is writing web apps that use AD for authentication. Our problem is when they try to authenticate using LDAP, the request is being thrown all over our domain (rather than the local subnet). Sometimes it will hit the local DC, other times it goes to our Mexico site, sometimes over to Maimi, etc. When it goes to our WAN sites, the web app is timing out. What determines which domain is servicing the request and is there anything we can do (aside from hard-coding the DC... due to redundancy reasons of course)? Thanks in advance.

SCW and windows firewall
by Guest yifli- 0 replies

our domain controller is running Windows 2003 server R2 enterprise edition (x64). I've installed service pack 2 for it. I tried to harden the server using Security Configuration Wizard. However, all the exceptions defined in Windows Firewall are gone after running SCW. Although I specified server roles such as DNS server, domain controller in SCW, new machines trying to join the domain failed to communicate with the domain controller. So I had to again define those exceptions in Windows Firewall manually. So my questions are: Does SCW always flush out all the exception settings in Windows Firewall? Why did running SCW not help opening ports in my…

Greetings all, I'm having some issues trying to manage Internet Explorer 6 through Group Policy. I've setup a new GPO and associated it with the OU I want. I've then gone User Configuration -> Administrative Templates - > Windows Components -> Internet Explorer -> Internet Control Panel -> Security Page and enabled the group policy Site to Zone Assignment list. I've added the sites I wish to add to the local Intranet, and exited. Now, when I log onto the desktop of the associated system as administrator, my IE settings come across. I go Tools -> Internet Options, then the security tab, I select the Local Intranet sites and all of my ad…

I've setup a Vista Business machine. I have set Network discovery, File sharing and Public folder sharing on. I enabled a couple of file shares and also placed a file in the PUblic folder.'
