Backups in 2003 SP2
by Guest Phil- 0 replies

Hi, We are having a serious problem with ntbackup on our Windows 2003 Standard servers. The problem originally occured when backing up the system state on the Domain controller. The backup fails after a few minutes with an error relating to the Volume Shadow failing at its first attempt. I then tried some investigation, and found that I can't backup up anything, on any of our servers (not just the DC) - even a single file from the C: drive. I get the same error relating to the volume shadow failing on its first attempt during backup. Typically I've left the exact error message on site (its not near where i work). I don't think its the problem that pe…

We are using Microsoft Server 2003 at our county jail. I need to set some of the users to only be able to access one computer. All users are in the same domain group and can access any computer on the domain. Is there a way to set that user to only be able to access a certain computer?

okay to remove $NtUninstallKbxxxxxx$??
by Guest Jeff- 2 replies

Hey The windows directory of my win2k3 machine has plenty of folders (in blue color) with names like $ExchUninstallKBxxxx$, $NtServicePackUninstallNLSDownlevelMapping$ and $NtUninstallKBxxxx$ These folders take up about 800MB on the server. From what I know these folders contain info so patch can be uninstalled.. but I'm satisfied with how the system works right now and have no planes of uninstalling those win2k3 patches... Is it okay to remove those folders or will it cause some other problems? Maybe I instead could burn those folders onto a DVD... so burn them to DVD and then delete them from Windows directory? Jeff

server resolution issue... Please help
by Guest Goofylox- 1 reply

Hi there, I'm migrating server1 to server2. When I'm done server 2 will have exactly the same as server 1 but much newer and windows 2003 OS. I would like to know how I can go about making the users unaware of any changes. Most users put links in their word docs, excel spreadsheets, etc, etc... that points to \\server1\data\.. so I want to migrate to server 2 and keep the server2 name but have all the users files still think that server1 is still active. I've tried doing some tests such as adding a record in dns (ie: server1test) but when I go to \\server1test\data\.. it presents a message saying "no network provider accepted the given path…

SBS Servers
by Guest stjoe5373@news.postalias- 2 replies

Hi, I asked awhile ago if I could join a Standard Server 2003 to a SBS 2003 domain and I received the answer yes. I don't recall where I posted the question, anyway I went to join the server to an existing domain last night and it said something to the affect that the AD was to old? It is 2003 Standard R2, am I missing something or can I not join that server to the domain, I just realized I want it to be a domain controller as well, I didn't ask that before, oops... I did join it to the domain, can I add it as a domain controller? That's the question I meant to ask. Thanks Craig

Display delete confirmation dialog
by Guest kenp21@gmail.com- 2 replies

Hey all, Had an interesting request today. User accidentally deleted some files that were being hosted on a share from a Windows 2003 server. He stated the "Display delete confirmation dialog" setting was unchecked... A requirement I received in result was to lock the setting down so users cannot display the dialog and accidentely delete an entire share of data. We do have backups etc to mitigate, but to reduce time spent by the administrators they want to lock this feature... I glanced over group policies and didn't see anything... Our infrastructure is Windows 2003 domain and all XP clients. Thanks and cheers, Ken

Hello All, I need advice on the best path to take. Here is our current situation. My client is a franchise of a building maintenance company. We are located in Cincinnati and the corporate office is in Kansas City. For the last 3 years my client’s network has been completely separated from corporate and operating just fine. We are running Windows Server 2003 as a PDC, with AD, DNS, DHCP and file and print sharing. The office consists of 7 Client PC’s and 3 Printers. It does not have Exchange. My Client is upgrading their CRM tool to Microsoft’s CRM package that integrates into Outlook that is hosted on corporate’s server. So, we have setup our …

Sub-domain name limitation
by Guest withers- 1 reply

The sub-domain LyonshallBooks.Lyonshall.net gives page not found. Books.Lyonshall.net works. In both cases, I set a DNS record for lyonshall.net with a Host A record for the subdomain and then an IIS website for subdomain.lyonshall.net. Is LyonshallBooks.Lyonshall.net invalid because the sub-domain name starts with the domain name Lyonshall? Or is there another setting I have to make? Thanking you in anticipation.

Re: Remote Desktop Connection W2K3 - THE SOLUTION Just in case anyone is intereseted the solution the problem was the ATI graphics card drivers. I have a habit of always downloading and installing the latest drivers for Motherboards and Graphics cards etc as per all good advice. The latest version of ATI drivers give a problem. The drivers from the CD supplied with the card work just fine. Hope this helps someone else in the future, took me a controlled reinstall to find this and RDP test at each step to find this. > DaveG wrote: > > > Hi all > > > > Today I have reinstalled our Domain server due to fatal problems. > > …

WSUS 3.0
by Guest Richard Johansson, Parnasso- 5 replies

Maybe this subject is not placed in the right newsgroup, but then excuse me for placing it incorrectly. I have a question about the Group Policy settings for the WSUS 3.0. I run an SBS 2k3 with 6 users logging in through VPN connections all of them. I would like to configure any updates that I have approved for installation in the WSUS Console to be automatically installed either upon logon or upon logoff of the specific user. The situation now being is that my users are stuck with the setting that they themselves have to approve which updates that are to be installed. How do I change this in the Group Policy object Editor?

What is the safest way to invoke a script remotely on a Windows host synchronously, and retrieving a return code to the caller at program termination? Because the target system is in a no man's land, I do not want to open up RPC port, and God forbid with have to involve the abomination that is DCOM. I want something extremely simple and special purpose, with good authentication features on the program server. What are my options? Commercial software is okay. -- Will

DHCP Server on a network that already has a DHCP
by Guest Trecius- 1 reply

Hello: I've a question regarding setting up a Windows 2003 SBS. We have our "main network" at our facility that assigns IP addresses using DHCP and allows clients to connect to the Internet. Now our group is trying to break away from the other network. We are trying to create our own tiny network, so we purchased our own server and our own switch. We moved all client computers from the main network's switch and plugged them into our switch. Now we want our server to assign IP addresses using DHCP, right? This is fine for now. A problem arises when the clients -- that we just switched -- need Internet. The Internet is and will always be "on" th…
