Re: Console (I suspect the original poster no longer cares 2 years later, but for others who find this site...) I found with XP I had to disable Fast User Switching and the XP Welcome Screen to get things to work properly when I had the same problem. (You do this in the "user accounts" control panel under "change the way users log on" or whatever.) -- roadworrier ------------------------------------------------------------------------ roadworrier's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/member.php?userid=31028 View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=30610 http://forums.techarena.in

Defrag Question
by Guest Mike Schumann- 1 reply
I am trying to defragment a 160 GByte hard drive on my Windows 2003 Server. It has about 22% free space, about 50 1+GByte files, and about 1,000 40+MByte files. When I start to defragment, it very quickly gets to 3%. After 8+ hours, I'm still at 3%. Is this normal? How long is this going to take? Note: I'm doing this while the server is running. I really can't take the server down for more than a couple of hours to run defrag. -- Mike Schumann

Help interpreting performance data

Hi Everyone, We have a server that is running very slowly and we've been unable to pinpoint what the problem is. By the time we realize it is running slowly, it's already too late to do any advanced troubleshooting because it's sooooo slow that it's basically unresponsive and the only option is to reboot it. It comes up fine, but then a few days later starts acting up again. This time I was able to get a screenshot of Task Manager before it became unusable. I transcribed some of the entries from some of the executables that looked suspicious for one reason or another. I didn't even bother to copy the CPU numbers because CPU utilization is very low…

Terminal server licensing - bug??
by Guest JayDee- 4 replies
In an effort to allow more than two terminal server connections to a couple of our servers, we built a terminal server licensing server and applied a license that allocated 50 CAL's - so on the terminal server, we see 50 licenses total and 50 available (we configured per-user licenses). We then went to the servers on which we want more than 2 connections, and pointed them to the licensing server - we tried both auto-detect and specifying the IP address of the licensing server. As expected, we were then able to create more than two TS connections. Now for the weird part. On the licensing server itself (The one we're pointing both servers to), it continues to say…

Windows Server 203 R2 SP1 - Insufficient system resources
by Guest Willbo- 0 replies

The following server has Oracle installed on it, but running 32bit OS. The following events are found with the event logs and the server is now encountering very poor performance. Prior Microsoft case last week, indicated the Memory “Free Page Table Entries" were the issue and recommended that the /Userva=3000 switch added to the Boot.ini file. Everything ran fine for a weed, but this issue is now back. I have checked with perfmon and the “Free Page Table Entries" are 16,750. I have also opened a new Web case with Microsoft, but looking for anything that might lead me to a final resolution. I do know that if I reboot the server that everything will be fi…

FTP Server blocked by VPN Server on Win2k3
by Guest soup_or_power@yahoo.com- 0 replies

The FTP service on our Win2k3 was functioning normally until the VPN server was installed. With VPN server running if I try to access the FTP site I get the message "this folder is not available". I am able to download files but not upload files. Since this started happening AFTER the VPN server was installed, I figured the VPN server was the problem. So I took the VPN server down and thankfully the FTP service was back. Can anyone confirm this has been a problem? Thanks

Hi, I've got a brand new install of Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition w/SP2 on a Dell PowerEdge 860 with 2 500GB SATA drives in a RAID1 configuration on a Dell SAS 5iR controller. I installed the OS on a 25GB NTFS partition. No problem. I then tried to create a new 25GB partition out of the unallocated space (basic disk, NTFS, default allocation unit size). LDM hourglassed for a minute, then came back with "The operation did not complete. Check the System Log for more information on the error". No messages were in the log. The volume shows as allocated, but not formatted or assigned its drive letter. If i try to format after the fact, I get a "The form…

Windows 2003 Telnet Server / bgjob.exe
by Guest Ted Wagner- 6 replies
I need some help here folks. Google and microsoft support searches are coming up empty. I'm trying to set up a Windows telnet server for some data operations. The objective is to allow remote authentication through telnet, start a background process using 'bgjob' to process data and then log off the telnet session (thus leaving the background process to complete). The application of this is in a mix environment with a mainframe system. The programs on the mainframe system would kick off the telnet command set to start the job on the Windows 2003 server. I have a Windows 2003 R2 (fully patched) system. I've installed SUA from the Add/Remove/Windo…

IPP Printing with Custom Map
by Guest Flash3200- 0 replies

We are about to institute an Microsoft 2003 R2 Print Server for the first time. We would really like to make it easy on the users to be able to install printers themselves (provided the propper access rights). We were interested in using a map of our buildings and having them loaded into IIS so that a user can just select the icon on the map for the printer they want to install and when they click on it it will do the install. We have gotten everything set up and working with the exception we can't find the proper link to use in the html code for the printer installation. The closest we've gotten is the link to the Print Server page for the printer, but then …

by Guest Stevie Wonder- 8 replies

Hi, I am sure this is simple but I am struggling being a newbie. Got two computers in my home lab one 2003 server SP1, the other XP Pro. 2003 running AD, and DNS (steve.com). NOT using DHCP, all IP addresses static and can ping each other. As such I have configured the DNS prefix of the XP client to be steve.com. The hostname of the XP client is "PC" and the hostanmes of teh server is "server01" When I try to log the XP client onto the steve.com domain it gives an error messaage: Cannot log onto domain. Element not found. WTF does that mean? It ask for a domain username and password that I created on the server. Does that username need admi…

problem: services.exe crash on reboot
by Guest Mycroft Holmes- 3 replies

Hi, sorry for cross-post, but it seemed appropriate. I'm trying to describe a problem for which I'm not totally familiar, so I admit my message could be slightly imprecise in terminology. we have a large c++ projects that compiles a windows service (and its dll's), that runs on some big 8-way opteron servers. On each server there's a single executable for the service, but it's been registered twice i.e. there are entries in the registry SERVICE_A and SERVICE_B that refer to the same exe, with different configurations. The servers reboot once a day and sometimes on reboot, services.exe crashes, leaving the whole machine in a zombied state. 1) this doe…

Error accessing Admin shares across a Trust
by Guest JDouglas- 0 replies
We have set up a two way trust between two Windows 2003 domains. We are using ADMT to migrate our AD objects from the source domain to the target domain. After I migrate a workstation, the workstation hostname is in both the source and target DNS. If I log into a workstation in the source domain and attempt to access the c$ share on the migrated workstation by typing the following at the run command: \\workstation_name.source_domain\c$ I get an error that says: Logon Failure: The target account name is incorrect. This also creates a number of event log errors in the security log of the migrated workstation with an ID of 529. However, if I issue…

I have a server with a Sony AIT 5 tape drive installed. A few weeks ago the drive was replaced because of a malfunction. When I put the replacement drive in I now see two drives in Removable Storage. The one has a red X on it and the other is the drive that I just put in to replace the failed one. I cannot get the server to backup using the Microsoft Backup Utility. I have tried deleting the missing tape drive but that does not work, I recieve an message that reads "Cannot delete 'Sony AIT 400GB SCSI Drive': only 'Not present' libaries can be deleted." The library is not present so I dod not see what the problem is. Has anyone seen a problem like …

Folder Redirections

I've setup a home folder redirection, and set up permissions etc, and a share using R2's DFSR service, and now I'm getting a message "This page has an unspecified potential security risk. Would you like to continue?". This warning only happens when I navigate from the desktop to my documents. If I navigate to my documents from Word, then I don't get any message. Is there actually a security risk? How can I get rid of this message? Thanks. William Mann

by Guest LamSoft- 1 reply

Now the situation that there is an old server (running server 2k3), now there is another more powerful server, but different hardware configuration, is it possible that I use sysprep the old server first, and then use GHOST to backup all the server partitions into a gho image, then use it to restore to the new powerful server, and re-configure it. I have to keep the share folder settings, user accounts settings,etc... while transfer the data from the old one to the new one? Is it possible to do so? Thanks a lot.

Hosting Platform
by Guest Mick Walker- 2 replies

Hi, I have been charged with creating a front end system for a web hosting solution. The company I work for is a large ISP based in Northern/Southern Ireland. We will be working with the Microsoft RDP team on this, as we have entered into partnership with them, and thus so will be used as a case study. Basically we are aiming for a robust deployment scenario, where upon sign up the clients website/space is created and deployed as automatically as possible, through the management interface I am designing (Similar to the way PIPEX do it). Here is the spec (That I have so far and its far from finished): • Web Hosting By default we'd like new site…

clarification for VSS UseMicrosoftProvider setting
by Guest Hong- 0 replies
It is documented the DWORD entry "UseMicrosoftProvider=1" at the hive HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore\ will force Windows 2003 SP1's NTBackup to use the built-in Microsoft VSS Software provider, a useful exclusion test to see if third-party VSS Software provider is at fault 1. Does this also apply for XP SP2 platform? 2. Is the default "UseMicrosoftProvider=0" when there is no presence of this value, then a third-party VSS Software provider is used if present? 3. If there're more than one third-party VSS Software providers, how to select a specific non-Microsoft third-party VSS Software provider to be the default? 4. Can VS…

How to replace Windows 2000 domain controller with 2003
by Guest Lasse- 2 replies

Hi I am planning to upgrade our current Windows 2000 servers to Windows Server 2003. We have four location in different cities (HQ and 3 branch offices). At HQ we have a Windows 2000 domain controller and a Server 2003 domain controller, at each of the branch offices we have one Windows 2000 DC. All the FSMO roles for the entire domain is located on the 2000 DC at HQ. I don't want to upgrade the 2000 servers, I want to do a fresh Server 2003 installation but I can't figure out how to do it. All four locations have been setup in AD Sites and Services with four different subnets. Is it as simple as demoting the branch servers and removing them from the d…

Strange Issue Migrating from SBS 2000 to Server 2003 R2
by Guest Bob Randall- 0 replies
I have a strange issue that I need help with – here are the details: I recently moved a small business office off of Small Business Server 2000 which was running as a DC, DNS Server, DHCP, and IS 2000. This office has 10 users, so I went the fully manual way. I took a new Windows 2003 R2 server, built a new DC, and added DNS and DHCP services to it. I changed the Domain name when I did it as well, because the person who created the initial SBS 2000 domain named it the same as their registered domain name (which caused issues with the externally hosted web site, etc). The SBS 2000 domain name was special-tees.com, and I built the new domain as home.specia…
