Hi Can anyone tell me what this folder does in Server 2003 (I know its linked with the system restore function in XP), and why it occasionally has up to 1GB of data in it on our server, which then disappears again? Thanks

I am logging on to a windows 2003 server as a local admin. Another administrator has disabled the command prompt. When run, the message "The command prompt has been disabled by your administrator is displayed". How is this done, I have looked at group policy and local security policy, but could not see anything. I am looking to enable the command prompt, as I need to run some commands on it.

High Availability
by Guest Steve- 1 reply

Hi there, I have a group of users who access a database which needs to be running all the time. The database itself is not very busy but it has to be available when needed. I am wondering what technologies & hardware I need to provide this. I presume I need 2x DC's, DNS, etc, and 2 servers with their database on it, in case one goes bad, etc. Is there some links or even a book which details what is needed and how to go about it? Thanks in advance, Steve.

Domain Browsing Issues

We recently imaged a small (< 25) number of laptops for use in our office. Our basic setup is a routed network with servers on a 192.168.10.x network, clients on 3 diff subnets. We have a number of W2k and W2k3 servers, clients are WinXP desk and laptops. We have two AD servers doing DNS & DHCP. What we're running into is with the new laptops, they can't always browse the Microsoft Network. We have an app that we need to browse in order to setup correctly. On the same subnet I can have clients that can browse, while others (usually the new laptops, but not always) can't. They get the "xDomain is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this …

DFS and file shares
by Guest runner7@fastmail.fm- 1 reply

I am trying to find out if Distributed File System (DFS) is what Windows Server 2003 uses to share files over a network. If not, what does it use? This is not about how to share files, but what is the technology used. Any reference to docs explaining would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Any Ideas?

Hello-- I have recently converted .Net 1.1 Web App to 2.0. There are approx. 25 Users that use the Application some are Citrix-ing and VPN-ing from a distance (many states away). The App is running on a Win2Ksp4 Server, and using a Sql Server 2K sp4 (and Reporting Services sp2). This also means that our WebApp running on 2.0, will sometimes in a dynamically generated link provide a link to a Reporting Services report in the 1.1 framework. Ever since the conversion we periodically enter a "Stuck" State ... What we currently know about the "Stuck" state: - If caught early it seems that non-WebServer Services are responsive. - When Stuck, the system exhibits …

i have no experience w/ windows server but am trying to come up with a way to automate an email. I want to email a file on Server A. (Can't use outlook to send b/c requires user being logged on & then there's outlook's security prompt) every Monday. Windows server is Server B. Is there a way to do this via the windows server? Does smtp just send email w/o security prompts? Can things be sent by the system as opposed to a user being logged on? If anyone could point me in the right direction....I am trying to learn. Not even sure what to be googling. thanks for the help. patti

Print issue on ghosted machines
by Guest ccoverne- 2 replies

At the beginning of our school year we received a new server. Due to an error in our AD, we couldn't connect the two servers one being a W2K and other 2003. We set up a second domain and called it lps.local. I am slowly migrating all accounts, printers, etc.. to the lps.local domain. We have machines that were ghosted right before the lps.local was added. I went in and changed the tcp/ip, wins, and dns settings to be pointed to the .local and our student accounts can add printers or at least some of them from our old domain. The machines that were ghosted after the .local was put into place student accounts can't add a printer. The get a message say…

How to extract SP .exes to a folder with file extensions filled ou
by Guest Alan-Seattle- 3 replies
Our company doesn't get media with our licenses about 50% of the time. Often when installing an app that rides the Windows Server 2003 platform, it will ask for us to put in the SP1 CD. I have the WindowsServer2003-KB889101-SP1-x86-ENU.exe file but when I run it, it extracts the files to a default directory it creates without filling in the entire file extension. For example comsvcs.dl_ instead of filling in the underscore with an "l". Does anyone know how to extract these with the file extensions filled in? This would help me to be able to point the application installs requiring the SP CD to a folder that has the files instead. -- Alan

What determines the environment variables used by a process???
by Guest DJ-Jeff- 1 reply

Ok, I am running an asp.net web application on three different sets of servers. The w3wp worker process runs under the 'Network Service' user on all three sets of servers. However, the TMP and TEMP environment variables are set to different values for the ww3wp process on each server set. I am checking the environment variable values using the Process Explorer tool from SysInternals. The values are as follows: - Server set #1: TMP and TEMP are set to "D:\TEMP" - Server set #2: TMP and TEMP are set to "C:\WINDOWS\TEMP" - Server set #3: This is a special case and is the cause of the problems. If I power cycle the server(s), and let the wo…

Modem Dial-Up Disconnect Problem
by Guest Rick@FTB- 0 replies
We have a modem dial-up connection to an external customer that remains stuck in the 'disconnecting' state after a dial-up session. To get around this I created a second connection to the same number which is fine until I attempt to disconnect that new connection - it then goes into the disconnecting 'state' and the original connection then reverts to the good 'disconnected' state. Our automated apps depend on a named dial-up connection so right now I'm doing a lot of connection renaming just to keep the apps happy. Any ideas on what the problem may be and also how do you purge dial-ups that are in the disconnecting state (if possible)? BTW - This connect…

Move certification authority to different server
by Guest Christopher Haydon- 0 replies

Hi I am looking at the best way of achieving this. I have read the ubiqutious KB on Moving Certification Authority but am a little confused, do you have to move it to a server with the same name? I basically have 2 servers, lets call them ISP-02 and LOCATION-2003 Currently our CA is on ISP-02 at our ISP in there managed hosting on our VPN network, we want to remove this server ultimately and move the CA role onto LOCATION-2003 that is in one of our offices. What is the best option, reading the KB on moving CA's but this can't understand if you have to restore onto a server with the same name which I can't do. Alternatively can I just turn the unins…

Virtual Machine Sizing
by Guest Dennis Procopio- 0 replies

I have a few end-of-life servers with apps consolidated on them. Most of these applications can probably be virtualized to save $$$ on new servers. Server1 hosts: Symantec antivirus 10.1 (server for @ 100 clients) (virtualization possible here?) A low-load MSDS IIS website (maybe a few users per hour, just used for safety reference in case of a fire, spill, etc.) Server2 hosts: SQL 2000 with @ 15 low-load databases - will not virtualize Websense Enterprise running all services with network agent (potential virtualization) IIS company intranet..simple, low-load I would like to capture performance logs on the above servers in order to better "size…

IP Address Change
by Guest taandrews@teamfishel.com- 1 reply

Summary/Goal: I am wanting to change IP Addresses on 4 of my 10 servers to get them on the same segment. This is to simplify my DR Plan as my MS Environment is recovered at a different 'hot-site' than my Novell environment. My final goal is to get all Novell Servers on a Segment and MS Servers on seperate Segment. Environment: I run DNS/DHCP via my Novell products. I know that I will have to change the DNS entries there and I will have to work with my development group for any 'hard coded' IP Addresses in other applications. Other than going to the connection, IP information, and changing there, what else or where else might I need to change. T…

You're speaking with someone who is being thrown into working with a server that has never worked on one before, so with that said, I'm trying to understand how I can send a message to all users. We are having trouble with e-mail so I'm wanting to by-pass it and go directly through the server. Thanks for taking the time to help solve this issue. Lisa

Change Local User Profile path after domain change
by Guest ptumelty- 0 replies
Hi, I wonder if anybody could help me. I've recently built a new server to replace an old Domain Controller (ROSEWOODSOLUIO) with a new one (RSNET). My plan was then to migrate the machines one at a time manually as there are only 5 or 6. The installation all worked fine, so I created an account for myself in the new domain (RSNET\ptumelty) and started to move machines over. The first machine to move over was my development workstation which is a Vista box. I was able to join the domain, but Vista created a new profile for the new domain user RSNET\ptumelty, it used the path c:\users\ptumelty.rsnet, presumably because c:\users\ptumelty was already ther…

moving your page file
by Guest mhowell- 3 replies
I have a Windows 2003 Enterprise Server with 4 gb of RAM. Wouldn't placing the page file on the D: be the best thing to do since I have high paging? The D: is a seperate drive since it is a Storage Area Network. When you make the change it warns you that the system will not be able to create debugging information if a stop error occurs. I don't understand this because you have the option to put a path in where the dump file will goto. The default is %SystemRoot%\MEMORY.DMP. However, you can change that to D:\MEMORY.DMP.

network share
by Guest uanmi- 7 replies

We do a backup overnight of our network shares. The problem is what to do about files being created and accidentally deleted by a user during one working day? This has happened again and undelete does not see the file on the server or the client. Is there a way to ensure that files on network shares can be restored using an undelete application either on the server or the client? Volume Shadow Copy appears to be xcopy wrapped up. It recommends using it only once per hour, so what happens if someone creates a file and accidentally deletes it during this 1 hour period? Is this really a usable solution or just wasting CPU cycles? I would like to know mo…
