suggeston on how to make migrations easier

Hello all Well I am working with a client that I am converting from server 2003 to sbs 2003 r2 because of some of the features which are in SBS and not in server 2003. This got me thinking.. why does Microsoft have this multi version of the same OS and wouldn’t it be easier on everyone if they sold a product which: 1. Came with all the features (Exchange, Sharepoint, SQL Server) which could be installed with 1 user so that a person could learn the products. 2. Allowed for additional users based up the the licenses purchased (1-50 Small biz), (51-x medium), (x-y large). This would allow an organization to grow without having to go thru the issues tha…

I am setting up a Windows Server 2003 machine ONLY to get over the 10 users share limit in XP Pro. I have over 10 users that need to map a drive to this server. 1) Do I need to purchase a license for every simultaneus user mapping to a shared folder (e.g. \\server\data)? a) If so, does it have to be a Domain, or can it just be setup as a Workgroup? 2) Are CALs installed and how is that done? Please list details.... Thanks!

I have 4 servers (details below) in my network and 24 client computers ( Most clients have XP Pro with about 3 that have 2000 2 Windows 2000 servers one of which is the DC with exchange and the web site, the others are a fax server, and remote server 1 windows 2003 server which is the new one I am in process of setting up. This will be our SQL server. How should I have my CALs licensing setup?? (obviously the least licenses that I have to purchase the better. The DC is using Microsoft SBS and when I bring up the licensing it says unlimited with 31 in uses plus 5 for Terminal Services. I just found the licensing is actually in the remote server 45 t…

Securing Folder For Remote Desktop Users
by Guest Edward- 1 reply

Hello, I need some help. I'm trying to quickly setup a server that will allow users to login remotely using REmote Desktop connection. I can't use Terminal Services. Within the C drive, I'm want to create a folder for Remote Desktop users. Within that folder I want to creat individual user folders for each user that logs into the server. I want each remote user to be able to access ONLY their user folder and NOTHING else. Sure they should have access to their individual user profile folders under documents and settings, but other than that, they should only browse to the user folder. I don't even want to allow the to browse the c drive. I was thinking o…

Server on domain has greyed out domain login.
by Guest Bromc- 2 replies

Why is it that some of my domain servers (not DC's) only give you the option to login locally and not to the domain (it's greyed out). You can still login to the domain by putting your domain in front of your network id, but still, why does it do this (and how do you fix it)?

xcopy /c >>file.log

Yes I know there are other parms I did not include, but my issue is that the file.log captures all the files being copied. However if there is an error message, it appears on the screen and never stored in the file.log. This was not the case in NT4. Any suggestions

Network Error and an unknown Error Code
by Guest Jonty303- 2 replies

I have a range of servers reporting a large amounts of the following Warning in the event log: "While transmitting or receiving data, the server encountered a network error. Occasional errors are expected but large amounts of these indicate a possible error in your network configuration. The error status code is contained with the returned data and may point you towards the problem." The event ID is 2012, the source is Srv, and the error code (last word contained within the Data) is 0000097a. I have checked the obvious things like drivers, firmware, ip and dns settings. I've rebooted boxes, rebooted switches, taken perfmon readings (nothing unusual…

Script to close open files
by Guest ara- 1 reply

Hi - We are running windows 2000 server. I want to be able to give one of our users the ability to close certain open files on our data (windows 2000) server. And really wondered what the best way to do this would be. I was thinking via a script maybe but I'm unsure of the contents that the script would require to do this. At the moment I close the open files for the user through computer management - shared folders - open files, but obviously I'm not always here to do this. Any help on this would be gratefully received. Cheers

I am posting this here online because I cannot get any straight answers concerning my problems. 1) Description So long and short of it that one folder within the site disappears 'randomly'. Now let me explain. The site has a subdomain http://weddings.stephenkiers.com/ that points to http://www.stephenkiers.com/weddings/. Every once in a while (that I notice at least) the folder starts displaying "The system cannot find the path specified" error. No other details, just that. Then, about 15 min later or so it is back up again and running. 2)Details It only effects the one directory (and its subfiles and subdirectories) http://www.stephenkiers still w…

Windows 2003 Server and Terminal Server Licensing nightmare
by Guest AllenM- 0 replies

I have a few questions regarding legal licensing in a clients environment where we will be installing software and assisting them in setting up terminal and remote services. I'm not 100% sure of all the logistics but I'm going to give all the details as I know. This is new hardware (DELL 2350 64-bit) and Windows 2003 R2 Standard - 64-bit I believe. This will be a terminal server as we will be installing Citrix Presentation Server 4.5 as well as Citrix Web Interface for remote access. So Citrix licensing part is easy. no problem there concerning licensing. Here's where I'm a bit confused as to the proper licensing they need to be legally licensed. Apparently …
