HOW TO SEARCH FOR FILES ON WINDOWS 2008
by Guest JJ Jones- 0 replies

Hello out there, I am running Windows 2008 Server. Microsoft has apparently changed the simple SEARCH utility that hangs off of the START button in XP. In other words, in XP you click on START, then click on SEARCH, then FOR FILES OR FOLDERS. Simple as pie. Unfortunately, somebody has apparently come up with a "better idea" in Windows 2008 because SEARCH isn't there anymore, and I can't figure out where they put it. I can't find anything in the documentation. Does anybody know where Microsoft hid the SEARCH function? Please help, since it is driving me stark, raving, mad. Thanks,

by Guest rmangaldas@gmail.com- 2 replies

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but it appears from Microsoft's web site that the "R2" in Windows Server R2 consists of free updates released by Microsoft over the years since Windows Server 2003 was released, which makes me wonder, can I upgrade my Windows Server 2003 install to R2 by downloading those updates? Which ones? Thanks.

Certificate Services
by Guest TMX- 3 replies

Hi, Just looking though the domain controller for this office, noticed that in the event viewer i keep getting a "Automatic certificate enrollment for local system failed to enroll for one Domain Controller certificate (0x80070005). Access is denied" each time the GP is refreshed. I scouted about and found out that Certificate Services was not installed on the DC? But is installed on the other DC in the other office. Do i need to install Certificate Services on both domain controllers? or can I ignore this error, or prevent it from occuring? As you can tell, this infrastructure was set up previous to me, and has its fair share of issues. Thanks for yo…

give normal user rights to start/stop a service
by Guest el- 1 reply

Hi all, How can I give normal user right to start/stop a service. This service is control by a program. When a user runs one particular function in the program, the program will stop the service, update a file and then start the service again. As a normal user does not have write right on any service, this function will fail. I believe by giving normal user to have right to start/stop this service, the problem should be gone. TIA el

We have a Windows 2003 DC (also being used as a Terminal Server -ugh) and we have setup an OU for our remote users and linked a GP to that OU that we modify to permit certain functionality. When we use gpupdate/force at a Command Prompt to update the GP, it does not work. If we reboot the Server, the changes to the GP take effect. Does anyone know why this is? Thanks

Need Help Auto Populating a Security Group
by Guest Enrique- 1 reply
For a new application I was asked to create a new Security Group that does not include any Administrators (because we would show up twice and could cause problems). I would like for this Security Group to auto-populate with users so that when a new user is added to the network, they do not have to be manually added to this Security Group. How can I do this? Additional Info: By default, everyone is added to the Domain Users group. Running W2K3 Server Enrique

Stop user logout
by Guest Flick Olmsford- 2 replies

We have users who, though group policy, have their login restricted from Internet Access using a bogus proxy server IP address. The users though know of another login they can use that requires access to the internet. The users are logging in, doing a minimal part their assignments, and then logging out and back in with the Internet required login, the username and pwd of which is required to be publically available. Can I stop these users from logging out once they login using their internet restricted logins and if so, how. Even stopping them from logging out during the next couple hours will do. The users can lock their screens when they need…

Add dotted name in dns forward zone
by Guest Jake- 2 replies
Hi, In a w2003 domain (mydomain.lan) we have a linux intranett server we want users to access by entering intranet.lan. I opened DNS / Forward Lookup Zones / Mydomain.lan, selected New Host (A) and entered intranet.lan and its IP address in the record. I noticed that a new folder named lan was created under Mydomain.lan and it contained the host entry intranet with corresponding IP address. However it does not resolve. If we enter a non-dotted name it resolves nicely. What do we need to do to have a dotted name like this resolve via a win dns server? thanks for suggestions Jake

'The inetinfo.exe process is allocating more memory than usual. The following services are hosted by this process: IISAdmin, POP3SVC, RESVC, and SMTPSVC.' What does this mean? I recently doubled the actual memory. Do I need to reset an alert threshhold somewhere, or is this unauthorized usage or something else? Thanks -- Ron
