hey I've installed Apache HTTP Server on a Windows Server 2003 machine. I would like to create an local user on this machine which will be the deticated user account in which the Apache process will run inside. This win2k3 machine has been promoted to domain controller so I don't have the local users option within compmgmt.msc So how can a local user be created on a machine promoted as domain controller ? Best Regards Jeff

Hi All Just want to check if the following procedure is OK to do: 1) On a local XP Pro SP2 machine I create a 'User' user account so that I have 1 x admin user account and 1 x 'user' user account. 2) I log into the 'User' account and config Desktop, Start Menu, etc to the way I want it to look, eg Auto-Arrange, Classic Desktop, 15 screen saver, My Docs icon on Desktop, etc. 3) I log out of the 'User' account and log in as the admin. 4) I copy the NTUSER file from my 'User' account to the default user account and also delete unnecessary shortcuts (eg Outlook Express) from the default user account. I now have a user profile 'look' that will 'kick…

Do I need Windows Server CALs?
by Guest Ben Amada- 4 replies

Hi. Our office is planning on buying a new server to put Windows Server 2003 on. The new server will be used as a terminal server for about 17 different users to connect to. I realize I would need 17 *TS* CALs for this. Our domain controller which hosts AD, DNS, DHCP, etc. is on a separate Windows 2000 server which we will not replace. In this scenario, will I need any additional Windows Server 2003 CALs for the new server other than what might already come with it? Thanks in advance, Ben

Windows 2000 Server - replace with Windows 2003 server
by Guest JPCLYONS- 1 reply

Can anyone point me to a references for replacing a Windows 2000 server with a Windows 2003 server? I need a step by step guide - since this project was inherited and my credentials right now are just an MCP. The current server is in a mixed mode Active Directory structure. It is the PDC, DNS and file server. The new Windows 2003 server will replace all these functions. So far, I have installed the server in the rack, assigned the two NICS with IP's, and gotten all service packs. It is still in WORKGROUP - I have not added it to the domain. Without disrupting logins, DNS, etc, I need to know the sequence of how to proceed. I do not want DHCP …

2003 server seems to be having issues with profiles and citrix lic
by Guest ghutnick- 2 replies

My 2003 server seems to be having a problem with properly distributing user profiles as well as citrix licenses. Each day when my local users login in almost half of them get the can not login in error because their profile can not be found. After several reboots they can login. My citrix users are getting a licensing error stating there are not more licenses available, but there are plenty. After several reboots they get in. The event log does not indicate any errors that would apply to this? What should I be looking for? Thank you

I am having an issue with my Vista Ultimate laptop booting up. The problem is that it takes 20-30 mins. It is in a domain environment. I have updated the bios. It gets to the "Please wait..." part in booting up and just takes for ever. We have messed with group policies and all of that fun stuff and still nothing. If anybody has or had this problem that knows something it would be much appriciated. Thank you

Printer going offline on terminal server
by Guest Brian- 1 reply
I have a Windows 2003 terminal server that has a networked printer installed for use by a remote user. The user is connected to the terminal server via a hardware VPN, and the printer is located on the remote LAN, and has an integrated IP print server connected to the remote LAN via Ethernet, so the terminal server prints to the printer via a standard IP port. Occasionally (about once per month for the last three months), the printer will go offline. I hear about it when the user calls me to indicate that she can print locally, but not via the application on the terminal server. By the time I log onto the terminal server, I can ping the printer, and its s…

I have a GPO to eliminate the use of MS Games via a software restriction policy. Is there a way to limit this restriction by the time of day? I would like to disable the policy during certain periods of the day, for instance during lunch and enable the policy during working hours. If there is a solution and can you give a good example. Thanks, Bob

I have Virtual Server 2005 installed on Windows 2003 Server R2 and it has been running fine for abut two weeks. I am running a web server within the virtual server enviroment. How can I separate Exchange and Domain Controller?
by Guest spacegoat- 3 replies
I don't know if this is even practicle or possible but here is the senario. I have walked into an existing network that has one 2003 Enterprise Server running as a Domain Controller/Active Directory. and as an Exchange Server. It is also the DHCP and DNS server. Not only that but it is also the RAS server providing NAT routing as well as VPN access. There is another 2003 Enterprise Server on the network that is just a file and print server. Needless to say this configuration is less than desirable! My goal is to add an ISA Server to handle the Firewall/Routing and VPN services and promote the file/print server to Domain Controller/Active Directory and m…

WINDOWS SERVER VERSUS WINDOWS SBS
by Guest Baldeagle812- 2 replies
I am looking at installing a Windows 2003 Server on a client site but am unsure which setup to go for i.e. Small Business Server or Windows 2003 Standard Servers. The client site currently has 50 users on a W2K SBS setup. The client currently runs MS Exchange and MS SQL on one SBS 2000 box. I am thinking of replacing the SBS with 3 windows servers, i.e. Exchange, SQL and a Domain Controller/Backup server. Although SBS state upto 75 users, I can't find anything that will compare SBS with Standard server. At would point should I be considering to user use standard server instead of SBS, can anyone point me in the right direction? Many thanks Ste…

windows 2003 Ent SP1 Server Crash Issues
by Guest Will Owens- 1 reply

Once in every 2 weeks one of our server crashes with the following errors, Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a transaction response from the ShellHWDetection service The issue is intermittent therefore very hard to analyze any trends. We have disabled all 3rd party applications but the issue still persists. It keeps on login every 2 secs; we have run hardware diagnostics, update all drivers and firmware but no good so far, I have searched the internet, many people have posted the same issue but no resolutions for this, The only thing which I can find on Microsoft website is about Xp [sysprep] which is irrelevant in this case. When the probl…

How Do I Put a Foreign Account in a Domain Global Group?
by Guest Chris Allen- 1 reply
I formed a trust relationship between two domains (domain01.com, domain02.com). There is a global group defined on domain01 that is critical to the operation of a SQL database. In order to use the database users much be in the global group called "pfgusers". The new domain (domain02) needs to access this database and needs to have it's users placed in the "pfgusers" group. The problem is that you can't add foreign accounts to a global group, but I have to do this... I don't feel safe mucking around with security settings that have to do with this proprietry database system. How can I get my foreign users into this group? I don't want to delete and recrea…

Possible bug in Update KB935666 for Windows 2000 SP4
by Guest RichardKok- 0 replies

Wanted to share this, maybe it helps someone out there. Affected: * Windows 2000 Advanced Server with SP4 * The Server is multihomed (2 nics with different subnet) * DNS Server is running on it * DNS Optiions : enable round robin = OFF, enable netmask ordering = ON Cause: Update KB935666 replaces DNS.EXE to version 5.0.2195.7135 (13/4/2007) Effect: The enable round option has been enabled after the reboot. After manually disabling again there are still issues with incorrect resolving. It seems that the enable netmask ordering option does not work at all anymore. When clients connect they get the first name record in the DNS database. This should not…

purpose for read only setting on folder
by Guest runner7@fastmail.fm- 1 reply

I was told in a previous post that the "read only" setting on a folder in Win 2003 is meaningless. This does not make sense to me, since I doubt it is there for decoration. On the other hand, it seems that you can read, write, and delete files in such a folder at will. Can anyone provide some insight on this enigmatic setting? Thanks for any help.

Why does Windows Explorer Show .zip Files as Folders ?
by Guest Lamont Sanford- 3 replies
My question applies to Windows Vista and Windows 2003 Server. There's one aspect of Windows Explorer that's driving me absolutely nuts. The left pane traditionally shows a hierarchical list of logical and physical folders, letting the user drill down the folder tree by expanding and collapsing the folder nodes. The problem is that if any of these folders contains a .zip file, these files show up as *folder nodes* in the hierarchy. I despise this. Since many of my archive folders contain nothing but .zip files (and lots of them), and because folder nodes tend to auto-expand when clicked, each click of a folder node generates this enormous list of .zip fi…

WSUS 3.0 Feature Questions

Hi folks, Apologies if this question is not in the right section for WSUS, if not please could you point me in the right direction for posting such queries. I've just installed WSUS 3.0 into our test lab and find myself wondering as to whether a number of features exist within WSUS. These are:- Audit capability - Can you tell who (user account) and when a particular update or updates were approved ? Note taking capability - Is it possible to make a note as to why a particular update was approved or declined ? Security - Is it possible to secure WSUS in order that only certain users can approve updates for certain groups ? Thanks in advance for …

create user but not allow them to logon anywhere?
by Guest Special Access- 4 replies

I was recently asked if I could create a (second) user account for someone that already has an account in AD. Since security doesn't allow this, I said no. The manager said I could create an account that would allow him to logon to the web page (which authenticates thru AD) but not allow him to logon directly to any workstation. This is the first time I have heard of this... not saying it's not possible, but I sure don't know how to do it. Can anyone shed some light on this one for me? Thanks! Mike

Giving full access to program files folder
by Guest Yobbo- 2 replies
Hi All I work in primary schools and unfortunately this means that I have to deal with the varied and bizarre world of educational software! A lot of this software won't work if the folders don't have read/write access so my plan has been that I give domain users full control to the Program Files (and sub-folders). To try and protect the folder I have hidden the C drive from the kids ( 3 - 7 year olds) via GPO and everything seems to be fine, but I just wanted to check if I have dropped a monumental boo-boo by doing this. Any comments/thoughts on this? Thanks
