<newbie> DNS zone name
by Guest Jeff- 2 replies
Hey my home network consist of 2 computers (winXP and win2k3) Now I'm about to configure DNS on the machine with Windows Server 2003. The goal is to have this computer is the domain controller in my network...and also configure Active Directory on my network okay the problem is with deciding what zone name to use for primary zone. I don't have any registered domains etc.. Lets say I use "microsoft.com" as zone name, would that create trouble for my DNS server? problems like it is confusing microsoft.com with the real microsoft.com... ??? (it may sounds like an overkill to have DNS, AD on my little network, but I do this in the spirit of learning ho…

User Directory NTFS Question
by Guest Dennis Procopio- 2 replies

We migrated a file server, manually. Using Folder Redirection with permissions specified in best practices, we logged each of our users on to the network and allowed Folder Redirection to create each user directory under the "Users" share on the new server. We moved the data into each folder respectively after this process. The NTFS permissions suggested for the Users share (from MS Knowledge Base) were that Creator Owner has Full Control on "this folder only." I'm assuming this was a suggested best practice as MS assumes a new deployment, not a migration, and that anything created underneath there would be under control of the owner. Perhaps I'm wro…

How to move user profiles from system drive to free up space
by Guest Lajos- 2 replies

On one of our production server (HP ProLiant 380D - 2 HD Raid1, C and D partitions) we are running out of space on the system drive. I was advised to move the user profiles from the 'Documents and Settings' folder on the system drive to the D drive. I have already read the q236621 KB article, but before I try the procedure I would like to see if anyone would have any experience with this procedure, or perhaps could recommend something else. Thanks in advance!

by Guest trusty- 1 reply

After configuring a policy in SCW and applying to a DC, the Trend ServerProtect service fails to start upon boot up. The error info is as follows: Source: Service Control Manager Event ID: 7024 Description: The Trend ServerProtect service terminated with service-specific error 258 (0x102). The serive is still set to automatic start but it is not running; if you manually start the service it will start and run normally. Setting the Recovery options to restart the service has no affect. If you rollback the SCW policy and reset all changed services back to their original states and bounce the server, it will start normally. We have followed the Tren…

Domain Password Change Locks Account
by Guest Jam Dude- 2 replies
Hi All! I've got this recurring problem. 1) A user changes their password on their XP pc connected to a W2003 domain, usually prompted by a Group Policy. 2) The user gets locked out of domain resources, loses all mapped drives, account locked out etc. The user has a "Stored username & password" on their pc. It did not automatically synchronize with the new password. Locking and unlocking the computer does not synchronize password at this point. To recover I: 1) Delete stored credentials 2) Unlock domain account on server 3) Reboot pc 4) User can finally log in ....but this is a big pain and causes the user downtime and a support incident. Th…

Client Certificates - "Page cannot be displayed" error
by Guest Roman- 0 replies
Hi there, I've got a curious problem regarding client certificates. I'm using Windows 2003 Server Certificate Authority client certificates for a web application to limit access to a web application. I've also created the client certificates from the standard 'User' certificate template. The problem I've got is that for a while all users could use the app fine with these certificates in place, however over the past month or two only some users report that they can't get into the web application and they get a "Page Cannot Be Displayed" error message (client machines are Windows XP tablet edition running IE 6 SP2). I've checked their machines and the…

Old NT4 Server up for 2K3?
by Guest D Murray- 2 replies
I have a small network consisting of 12 Windows 2000/XP clients and a single NT4 Server running as a domain controller and file server. The server is an old IBM Netfinity P2-450MHz with 512MB. I have purchased a new IBM x-Series machine to replace it, along with Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition. I know from reading this forum that the easiest way to migrate my NT4 domain to Server 2K3 is to upgrade my NT4 DC. My problem is that the OS partition on my old clunker is only 1 GB in size, with only 300 MB free. I was considering purchasing Paragon Partition Manager to enlarge the partition enough to install Server 2K3, but will the rest of the hardware …

Second 2003 DNS Server
by Guest Frank- 1 reply
We have two Windows 2003 servers, serving internal LAN only, one is our domain controller and primary DNS, and the second is also a domain controller and our second DNS server, and here's my question: Should the Reverse Lookup Zone on our "192.168.1.x Subnet" on the first DNS Server be set to "Allow Zone Transfers" to the second DNS Server? Or is this unnecessary? The Forward Lookup Zone for this .local zone is Active-Directory integrated, as is the Reverse Lookup Zone. -- Frank

finding all ip addresses on network
by Guest JanetP- 2 replies

We are running Windows Server 2003 with XP Pro workstations. Is there somewhere I can go to find out all the ip addresses being used in our network? We are also running a Linux server which is only being used as a firewall and dhcp server. I was able to find out what computers are currently connected along with their ip addresses; however, I would like to know all ip addresses including all static ips such as routers, printers, etc. Is that possible? Thanks

Print Drivers frequently updating
by Guest Mark Puchalski- 1 reply
Running Win2k3/SP1 print servers. Printers are installed on XP/SP2 workstations. Lately the workstations have started getting many event ID 20 events from the Print source. Looks like drivers are frequently updating, even though there are no changes being made server-side. We have also started to see some corruption on some workstations for Dell color printers using PostScript drivers, and I'm wondering if the corruption is being caused by the drivers continually downloading. Any ideas why the drivers keep pushing down from the server?

Security Policy / Auditing / Event Logs - Please Help!
by Guest Rafael- 0 replies
I'd be really grateful for some help please. I'm a newbie!! I have a Dell Latitude laptop running Windows XP Pro. The Security event log on this machine has hundreds of 'Success Audit' type entries. They are mainly events 528, 538, and 576 (Logon/Logoff, Privilege Use etc). When I say hundreds, I mean there appears to be an average of about 4 per minute under normal use. Whenever I have looked at the Security event log on other machines, 9 times out of 10 there's only one 'Success Audit' type entry there. I have looked at Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Local Security Policy --> Local Policies --> Audit Policies on the laptop. Ever…

Terminal Server logon problem
by Guest RGA- 14 replies

I upgraded my SBS 2003 server over the weekend and all went well. In doing so, I had to demote the other DC in my domain and rejoin it to the new SBS server's domain. I now cannot log on to the other DC remotely with terminal server. I have checked all the policy and terminal server settings and permissions and I can't seem to figure it out. I am able to log on with my personal domain acct but the administrator account gets the "To log on to this remote computer you must be granted the Allow log on throuogh Terminal Services right" message. This is really baffling me as I have set all of the settings (I thought) to match those on the SBS 2003 server which …

The "policies" folder located in the c:\winnt\sysvol\domain folder has grown to 466mb. While browing through this folder I see over 1700 folders with really long names. Inside of these folders are files named "inetres.adm" and "system.adm" . Some of these files date back to 2002. Can any of these files be deleted?

Install backup software on my AD?
by Guest badamsios- 1 reply
I don't like the idea of my AD server doing anything other than AD. My co-working insists we must put the backup software on and run the backups FROM AD. I'd rather have a dedicated backup server. We are getting a new disk to disk to tape system to speed up disaster recovery so I'm looking for the fastest backup and restore options possible while still protecting my AD as much as possible. What's the best practice for backing up AD? Brian

Certificate Authority

I have a stand-alone internal CA which appears to silently fail to publish its revocation list. I can view revoked certificates and publishing either new or delta produces no displayed or logged errors. However, the CRL is empty and has an old timestamp. Can anybody give me pointers on how to resolve this? This is a fully patched Windows 2003 workgroup server.
