Disaster Recovery Plan for complete system restoration
by Guest Roman- 3 replies

All, I'd like some real-world advice please. I manage a small 5 user client-server network with a tight budget. The network uses a single server running Win 2K3 R2. The server has several additional roles including IIS with WSS3 and a suite of applications running under Terminal Services. I've progressively worked through the precautionary steps including hardware RAID1 and daily backups using NTbackup to an external USB hard drive. I have an ever present linguring concern about disaster recovery. I've researched and read numerous tutorials and MS articles however many real-world forum threads are not so comforting. A real-world thread I read only d…

file corruption after disk got too full
by Guest Rob- 1 reply

Hello, Here's the scenario: 2003 server, RAID 5 with 2 partitions. D partition had 1 huge folder (about 500GB), and partition itself was about 535GB. Data grew unexpectedly & got up to about 534GB. Got errors in event logs pertaining to disk full, and immediately moved folder to partition with more room using Xcopy. Have since discovered that corruption did occur randomly in some sub folders. Files are mostly .dwg & .pdf files. If I run a scan disk on the new partition where the data was moved to, could it possibly repair some of these corrupted files? New partition is on a DAS & is about 2.1TB in size, so chkdsk would take a long time t…

Folks: I need to know if anyone is aware of any software that can record everything that is being done on a PC I own and store this on a file in that computer or on a server in my own company where we can access it from another computer and view the recording without interfering with the usage of the recorded machine. Is there such a thing? Please advise... Bikini Browser San Juan Puerto Rico

login contain no "this computer"
by Guest Jeff- 4 replies

Hey I've performed a fresh installation of windows server 2003 enterprise. After installation I've promoted this this machine to primary domain controller. After I'd promoted it do dc then I cannot find the "this computer" in the login screen. I find only the netbios name of the domain in that "log on to" drop down list this PDC cannot use netbios domain name to ping the domain it's set to be a controller of... If I use fully qualified dns name then it works... Lets say dns is: test.local, the I can ping using test.local, but ping TEST doesn't work any suggestion?

Questions about using IDMU and Services for NIS for Linux authentication
by Guest Rob Gordon- 2 replies

We are trying to create a single point of authentication for our heterogeneous Linux/Windows environment. I have set up a Windows 2003 R2 server as a main AD server and installed the Identity Management for Unix subsystem. Do I also need to install any other services, or does choosing IDMU automatically install all the necessary subservices (RPC port mapper, etc.) that are required for allowing Linux/Unix hosts to authenticate to the AD server acting as an NIS Master? Also, in order for the Linux machines to properly authenticate off the Windows NIS Master server, does the Linux machine need to be configured to do so using Kerberos?

Why can't I get my domain server to correct itself by periodically checking an internet time server? It is the master time keeper for my domain which is great but it can't seem to keep time in itself. How do I make it a slave to an internet time server? Which is a good time server to use?TIA -- Posted via NewsDemon.com - Premium Uncensored Newsgroup Service ------->>>>>>http://www.NewsDemon.com<<<<<<------ Unlimited Access, Anonymous Accounts, Uncensored Broadband Access

I need to lock down CD/DVD writer and USB for some PCs so users only can read CD/DVD or USB but not able to copy/write anything to it. Of course, I don't want to impact other functions, such as USB mouse, Keyboard, even Blackberry. Is there a easy way to do it, for instance GPO? I'm running Win2K3 SP2. Thanks.

Network Printer offline server 2003 untill re install
by Guest Peter- 0 replies

Hello there. I am currently swapping all the printers in the office to the new print server we have. We have 6 in total and 5 are working without issues. I am having an issue trying to get a network printer to stay online. After i add it to my print server it will stay on status "ready" for about 30 mins to an hour where i can successfully print, however after that time the printer changes to offline. I first thought it was the printer that was the problem so i went and checked the physical connections and all seemed ok. I then checked further by adding the printer connection to the old print server, and the printer then reports as "ready" and has b…
